Bronco Bulletin
December 13, 2024
Dear HA Students, Staff, and Families,
What crazy weather we've had this week! With just five school days left in 2024, the holiday season is officially in sight. When we return from vacation, it will be just twelve days until exam week.
During exam week, each class will administer comprehensive summative assessments that cover the first semester. Meaningful, well-designed midterm and final exams are a cornerstone of strong educational practice, for the reasons below:
Encourages Deep Learning and Retention
By studying for a comprehensive exam, students are more likely to grasp the larger themes and key concepts of the subject, rather than simply memorizing information for a short-term quiz. The process of reviewing and synthesizing content helps improve long-term retention.
Enhances Overall Learning Experience
Midterm exams are not just about assessment—they’re a learning tool in themselves. Reviewing for these exams often helps reinforce material and improves students' study habits, time management, and organizational skills.
Promotes Critical Thinking
A well-designed midterm exam assesses not just factual recall but also students’ ability to analyze, apply, and synthesize information. This aligns with higher-order cognitive skills that are essential for success beyond high school.
Identifies Areas for Improvement
Midterm exams provide a clear picture of which students are struggling and which topics may need to be revisited. Teachers can use this as an opportunity for targeted interventions or additional review sessions.
Prepares Students for Future Assessments
Midterm exams mimic the structure and rigor of final exams, helping students practice test-taking strategies and manage exam-related stress. These exams build stamina for longer assessments and familiarize students with the format and expectations, helping them perform better on finals and future assessments in other courses.
Supports Accountability and Motivation
Comprehensive exams can increase student motivation by emphasizing the importance of all content covered in the first part of the course. For students who might have gotten off track, the midterm exam serves as a chance to refocus and recalibrate their learning heading into second semester.
The exam schedule is included below.
We've got a lot of fun stuff coming up, so let’s keep the momentum going as we wrap up the year and get ready to enjoy some holiday excitement. Have a great weekend and GO BRONCOS!
