MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Franklin Students and Families,
We are almost at the half-way point in the school year! When we return from winter break students will have 2 weeks before finals which are January 22nd - 24th. We will follow a different schedule each day that week starting with no school on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday and an all 8 classes day schedule on Tuesday. Check out Trivory for more details.
Students - it’s already time to start thinking about what classes you want to take next year! The week we return on Thursday, January 9th you will participate in our annual Forecasting Fair during the school day. Students will learn from teachers about classes they are interested in taking. Check out the interactive course guide here.
I know the next two weeks can be difficult for students as they may have to be away from their friends and caring adults at school each day. The Multnomah County Crisis Line - 503-988-4888 - can be accessed as a resource anytime 24/7.
As I begin to reflect on the first half of the school year, I'd like to share a quote from the Dalai Lama, “Calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence, that’s very important for good health.” My wish for you this winter break is good health and that you may be able to slow down and enjoy a calm mind for a bit of time.
Have a restful and joyous winter break! See you in 2025!

Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Support During the Holidays
Every year, many of our FHS students and families experience increased stress during the winter holiday season and some of our students may experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and thoughts about death or suicide. Franklin has many school based supports that all student can access, as well as additional culturally-specific providers on site, to ensure equitable access to care for our students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).
If your student is thinking about suicide, please consider using the following crisis supports:
- Multnomah County Crisis Line (& Project Respond) | 503-988-4888 | 24/7 mental health support
- Cascadia Urgent Walk-In Clinic: 42nd & SE Division | 503-963-2575 | Walk in open daily 9am-9pm
- National 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline | dial or text 988 | 24/7 support and many other Suicide Prevention resources
If you are unsure what "signs of suicide" to look out for, the following is a list (from 988) of common warning signs, especially if the behavior you student is experiencing is new, has increased, or seems related to a painful event, loss, or life change:
- Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves
- Looking for a way to kill themselves, like searching online or buying a gun
- Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
- Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
- Talking about being a burden to others
- Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
- Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
- Sleeping too little or too much
- Withdrawing or isolating themselves
- Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
- Extreme mood swings
Remember, don't panic! Talking to your child about suicide thoughts can be intense, but asking them if they are thinking about suicide will NOT give them the idea, and will NOT increase the chance of them making an attempt. Talking with a trusted adult or parent about these thoughts often brings feelings of relief once they are able to start talking about these thoughts and feelings. If you need support having this conversation with your student, please reach out to their School Counselor or the School Social Worker, Jed McClean | 503-729-1626 | jmcclean1@pps.net

LAST CHANCE: 2025 Diploma Submission
Class of 2025, it's time to submit a request for your high school diploma. This is your opportunity to decide how you want your name to appear on your diploma. Will it be your full name or just first and last? Parents or guardians may also have suggestions, so consider including them in this important decision. Using your PPS email, please complete the Diploma Submission Form.
The deadline has been extended but we must receive your diploma submission before the end of Winter Break if you have any changes to make. If no submission is received, your full legal name from Synergy (first, middle, and last) will be used and printed onto your 2025 diploma.
Note: There is no cost for your diploma. Every senior who completes all graduation requirements is awarded a diploma by the school.
Yearbook Phots & Quotes
Seniors, your photos and quotes are due to the yearbook staff by February 14th. Submissions can be made here. Important note, if you do not receive an email confirmation, your submission has not been received.
December Scholarship Opportunities
Please encourage your senior students to apply for scholarships. Above are scholarships due in December. Please visit Oregon Goes to College for more information.
ATHLETICS
NEW: Important Update to PIL Sports Registration
We are pleased to announce that PIL athletics will be launching a new registration platform for both high school and middle school sports in January 2025, called Play On Sports. This platform will be ready just in time for our spring registration.
Play On Sports works with the many different systems and platforms that we use within PIL athletics that will help make the registration and clearance process more streamlined than Arbiter Sports/Family ID for both parents and our department. Play On Sports syncs with Synergy for registration, NFHS for streaming, OSAA for game schedules, and our new online ticketing system, Go Fan. With this new registration system we will also get new websites for our district athletic page, all of our high schools, and middle school cluster websites.
With this transfer of platforms we ask that parents be sure to download a copy of their students' most recent sports physical from the Arbiter/FamilyID platform so they may upload it to the new system. We ask that this is done by January 1, 2025 before our current platform, Arbiter Sports/Family ID is no longer accessible.
NEW: FAB's Weekly Newsletter
Franklin Athletic Boosters is going to be busy over break! Read their weekly newsletter and find out how you can participate here.
Game Schedules
Because game schedules are subject to frequent, often last-minute changes, we don't publish them in this newsletter. Please bookmark this page to have easy access to up-to-date game info.
We run items in The Bolt family newsletter for two weeks unless there is a good
reason to run them longer. To submit an item, fill out this form by 4pm on Thursday.
You can find past issues of The Bolt on the FHS website or on our Smore homepage.
There is a lot going on at Franklin. Make sure to download Trivory, bookmark the
