Summer is Here
Summer is almost here! The pictures illustrate your impact. The monthly student presentations to the Board demonstrate your impact. The daily snapshots are predictors of your impact. As the annual state results trickle in, the results will be another indicator of your impact on student safety and academic achievement.
The end of the school year brings reflection and memories. The memories and reflections also bring appreciation, especially for the hard work and the celebratory results of the students. As we enter summer, I wanted to express my gratitude once again. Thank you for doing your hard work this year. Thank you for working to see that kids are academically successful, feel important, and feel safe. Thank you for partnering with our parents and community to support the success and safety of our students. Thank you for educating our youth. Together, we forge ahead on our goals and vision for every student!
Educators, families, and students, you have worked hard this school year. As school finishes, I count on each of you getting to enjoy the summer - time with family, time for adventures like camping, and time to recharge. With the rest and rejuvenation comes new energy and innovation for the start of the next school year. I may see some of you around town this summer. We will be in the office. And I look forward to exploring the waterways and hiking trails in St. Maries and surrounding areas.

Progress and Impact as a Result of Your Work
Goal 1. Increase the academic achievement of all students. The goal is to see 60% or more of our students reach grade-level ability in Language Arts. The goal is to see 45% or more of our students reach grade-level ability in Math. Preliminary state results show us steadily climbing towards the 60% and 40% performance targets in ELA and Math. In the fall, schools will dive deeper into the data to identify what practices/strategies are working and where to add or improve practices/strategies.
Goal 2. Expand the college and career readiness of our students. The goal is to see a 90% - 100% graduation rate and an 85% college-career readiness rate. Preliminary results show over 90% of our HS students are on track to walk across the stage and pursue college, a trade school, the military, or the workforce this Saturday, May 31. In the fall, schools will dive deeper into the data to identify what practices/strategies are working.
Goal 3. Provide a safe, healthy, and inviting environment for all students.
The goal is to have 75% or more of our students feel safe and connected to school. Preliminary results show that over 75% of the elementary students felt respected and connected to school. Preliminary secondary results show that 50% to 60% of the students felt respected and connected to school. In the fall, schools will dive deeper into the data to identify what practices/strategies are working and where to add or improve practices/strategies.
Goal 4. Improve communication between the school district and the community. The goal is to increase family engagement through different information platforms (i.e., newsletters, district/school websites, and the district/school Facebook pages). There are multiple home-school events each quarter. People can now find weekly updated information on the websites and FB posts. Attendance for school-home conferences is over 90%. These data points are evidence of improved communication.
SMSD Lumberjacks and Panthers continue to work hard. Our work is not done until 100% of our students meet these goals.
