Principal's Message
Good morning Timberwolves Nation!
We made it through our four day week since the students had off Monday. You should have received your child(rens) report card on Friday, please reach out if you did not get that, but also be sure to check you child's backpack and take home folders. We picked up the learner's journey right where we left off as we kicked off the fourth and final quarter of the year. Remember our theme this year is to get "Wild About Learning," and our teacher's are ready to rock it. Our upper grades (3-5) continued to persevere through the forward state assessment, so be sure they continue getting a good night's rest, eating a healthy breakfast, and you are encouraging and validating all the hard work they are putting in. Kindergarten had a blast on their field trip, and our younger grades are starting units in science and social studies. We did have our state wide tornado drill practice on Thursday, so we all got to practice our "shelter in place" drill to know where we need to go in the event we had a true emergency.
There is a lot of thanks and gratitude to acknowledge from this past week. We wanted to thank all of our families that came out to help at the Culver's Night, or came and ate dinner as we get a certain amount of the proceeds. We should be getting more information on that this upcoming week, but we did make $220.00 in tips alone, so this money will go to help fund field trips for the upcoming school year. We want to thank Mrs. Patty Kline as April 4th was National School Librarian Day. The Book Quest team led by Mrs. Patty brought home 1st place in the competition, so a great way to highlight National School Librarian Day! We also officially thanked our paraprofessionals as we celebrated them on Wednesday, for all the supports they provide. This past week was also National Assistant Principal Week, so we want to be sure to give a huge shout out to Mrs. Ford, and her heart for serving our students, staff, families, and the school community! She goes above and beyond to ensure our students are getting "Wild About Learning!"
We hope you joined us last week with our new character trait, because we love when our families engage with our curricular resources as it reinforces those traits in all areas of life. Here is the second “PurposeFull Pursuit” you can complete together! We have all demonstrated Courage in our lives. Stories are powerful tools for connecting as a family. Protect time this week to share stories about Courage with each other (you can use the story prompts to get started). At the end of the conversation, think of 1 way you can practice Courage this week.
Story Prompts:
- A time I (or someone else) showed Courage was _____.
- An act of Courage that changed/challenged me was ___.
This upcoming week is a busy one, again with only four days in it because there is no school on Friday, April 18th. We will kick off the week with an assembly because Mr. Karns was recently recognized as a Herb Kohl Principal Leadership award recipient. Mr. Karns was 1 of 14 principal's across the state of Wisconsin that was awarded this recognition. Our school will receive a $6,000 grant to be used for opportunities for students. I wanted to take this time to share this recognition with my school community and thank you all for opening your arms and welcoming me in as your school leader. I have enjoyed serving our students, staff, families, and community in my third year as your principal, and look forward to continuing the great work we are doing at Todd, as well as continuing to grow as a school community to help our students thrive in an ever changing world. I am feeling very blessed and honor to receive this award as I consider it a win for our all of us, because this work is not done in silos, but as a team! Let's continue to get "Wild About Learning" as we close out the fourth quarter.
We will continue to work through our assessments as we continue forward state testing and our next round of ACT 20 screeners. Depending on the weather there may be a fire drill practice as well since these need to be done monthly. We did also add more events to take us through all the way to June, so be sure to save some of those dates as they pertain to you. We will have our family picnic on June 4th, so please plan accordingly with your places of employment. Some of you have also reached out about how to support the school district given our current state of not passing the most recent referendum. There is a link for donations to the school district below, and these can be earmarked for certain areas, so please consider looking into that if you would like to support financially.
We hope everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend, and please reach out if you have any questions. skarns@sdb.k12.wi.us, or call/text at 608-207-2301
Thanks,
Samuel Karns

National Assistant Principal Week April 7th - 11th
We wanted to take a moment to celebrate our assistant principal, Mrs. Ford. Assistant principals our some of our unsung heroes in the education system. Mrs. Ford is not only dedicated to our school community, but works tirelessly to bolster teachers, motivate students, support our administrative team, create a positive learning environment, and face the many unpredictable challenges that land on her desk everyday.
Mrs. Ford plays a crucial role, and this past week we dedicated time to recognize her for her hard work and commitment to our schools, students, and profession. Please join us in celebrating her! Thank you Mrs. Ford for all you do to enhance our student's learning experiences, and support the school community.
National School Librarian Day
School librarians spend long hours keeping the library organized. They are also dedicated to helping our children find the resources they need to keep learning. School librarians are the people who create an environment where students can learn every day of the year. Their work is an impressive accomplishment. THANK YOU Mrs. Kline for all you do at Todd Elementary
Grade Levels Corner
Early Childhood
- We will continue our bug unit this week with our The Very Hungry Caterpillar book study and some corresponding art. As our class grows, we are also working hard on safe transitions. Many of us are becoming independent walkers in the hallway!
4K
- This week we are beginning a new theme in our classroom, “Animals”. Children will learn that mammals are a special kind of animal that breathes air, has a backbone, grows hair, and is warm-blooded. Mammals also feed their young with milk from the mother. Children will consider these characteristics to reach the conclusion that they are mammals, too! Please see the Dojo/email from your child's teacher for the weekly virtual storybook as well as the Family Connections page.
- Thank you to all of our parent chaperones who went with us to the Discovery Center - the students had a great day! We will start a new literacy unit next week and we continue to work on putting numbers together to add and taking numbers apart to subtract.
1st Grade
- This week we started our final literacy unit. We will be researching plants and writing opinions. This week we found "WOW!" facts about plants. In math we continued with adding and subtracting stratgies with bigger numbers. In Social-Emotional learning we started learning about courage.
4K exploring real worms in the science center
4K painting with "worms" in the art center
2nd Grade
- This week, second graders started Unit 4 in literacy, focusing on "Jobs In Our Community." We explored various occupations and wrote both a fact and an opinion about those jobs. In math, we identified different coins and their values, practiced counting coins, and learned to make change using two different methods to determine the most efficient. In Social Studies, we studied landforms and discussed the reasons why individuals relocate from one place to another. In SEB, we introduced the character trait of Courage. Each student created a drawing of themselves participating in a new activity that required being courageous.
3rd Grade
- Third Graders came back from Spring Break well rested and ready to learn. We are continuing with Eureka Math Module 5 and learning about unit fractions and their relationship to the whole. For ARC , we began a new literacy unit of Marine Life. We will research marine animals for the entire Quarter 4 and learn how to debate. During class, we had a great discussion of which marine animal is the most dangerous. In Social Studies, we are studying the French and Indian War. The SEB Character Trait is Courage for the month of April.
4th Grade
- Fourth grade came back ready to get wild about learning in the 4th quarter. We continued our Forward testing by completing the Social Studies test this week. We will finish out testing next week with the Science tests. During math we continued our fraction work by using what we have learned to solve word problems. As Marine Biologists in science we have learned more about how sound waves work to move sound energy between particles. We have started exploring books in our new ARC unit, Sports and Society. We are getting ready to research a new sport and learn how to write and argument for why people should participate. During SEB we started talking about our big dreams and how it will take courage and hard work to reach them all.
5th graders
- This past week, 5th graders have been diving deeper into math concepts involving the area of rectangular figures with fraction side lengths. They’ve also been practicing how to solve real-world problems involving area using mixed numbers. In ELA, students continued their space research projects, spending time sharpening their research skills and gathering information on their chosen astronomical object. We’re so proud of their curiosity and growth as young mathematicians and researchers!
