Season of Gratitude
Hello Sunset Lake Families,
Next week we will get the opportunity to celebrate your child's GREATNESS at our family-teacher conferences. We look forward to welcoming you to our building.
IF you have not already completed our familly survey we will have that available for you to complete in our gymnasium. You will also want to check out gymnasium to see all of the many items collected in our lost and found.
We look forward to this special evening with our families.❤️❤️
Habit #2-- This month our focus is on Begin with the End in Mind. There are so many great practices we can learn from this habit and it can really help us achieve our goals. Please take a look at the shared video of Habit # 2 for your family.
Student Lighthouse:
Our student lighthouse is coming together nicely! Students who applied and were selected for the Executive Board will have special role to help model and be representatives. The entire Student Lighthoue our models for others and play a very special role in helping our school become the best it can be. Thank you Mrs. Guerreo, Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Schimp for leading the work!
Family Lighthouse: Thank you to the families that have joined our Family Lighthouse team. We had our first meeting this past week and we were able to discuss several topics that will help us create true family partnerships and a strong sense of belonging for not only our students but also our Sunset Lake families. We are still happy to have you join us at our next meeting on November 22nd at 8:00 am if you would like to be part of our Famiy Lighthouse team.
Student Stewardship:
It's important to help teach our students the nature of giving back to help them connect to the world and understand how everyone can help make the world a better place.🌎❤️ I'm proud to share our First and Second grade teams have created two opportunities for students to give back and learn more about current events. See the Peanut Butter Drive and Hurricane Relief initiatives shared below.
Attendance:
Thank you families for helping us record our attendance accurately with your communication and sharing doctor notes with us.

Here is how you can help those in our community and those that were effected by the recent hurricanes.
Hurricane Relief: All money donated goes to the American Red Cross
- Scan the QR code
- Bring in Cash or Check (made out to VCS-Sunset Lake) and place it in the blue box that is in the lobby.
Peanut Butter Drive: All the peanut butter will be donated to Generous Hands here in Vicksburg

Healthy Habits for Students
Things to Keep in Mind:
When sending in snacks, please refrain from high added sugar snacks and highly processed foods if possible. Lunches with high protein and low sugar are best. Refrain from sending in soda-pop as a drink and remember that water bottles are allowed to be filled with water only.

Attendance Code Changes
Always Report Your Child's Absences
To help us ensure that we are aligned with our 6-12 district attendance policies our elementary schools have adopted new attendance codes this year. Please see the graphic below.
This will change in which your child's attendance is recorded.
*Also--please note, that if your family is planning a vacation or your child will be missing multiple days of school for an event, we require families to complete our building's leave form to help your child's teacher to be informed of missed school days and to help determine work to be made up.
Complete your School Meal Form
Complete Your School Meal Form Today! Time is running out!
Even though all meals are free for the 2024-25 school year, other education benefits provided to the district are determined each year based on the information provided in School Meal Forms.
These are very important benefits you can help make sure our students get, simply by filling out the Education Benefits Form.

It’s that time of the year...time to think about Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books (BOTB) is a yearly competition coordinated by Tamara Young and Vicksburg Community Schools. Groups of 5-7 students (6 is ideal) form teams to compete. Students may be in 4-6th grades. Vicksburg Community Schools publishes a list of 12 books which range from 4-6th grade reading levels in October. The teams have from October through January to read and study these 12 books. The team will divide the books so that one or more team members cover all 12 books. The competition is very steep and the questions on the battle day are very specific. The preliminary and semifinal battles will be held on February 1st, and the Grand Battle will be held on February 6th.
I have already sent home permission slips with 4th and 5th graders and will be presenting in classrooms on Friday so students will hear more and be able to ask questions! We will need coaches so please consider
Students who have participated in this program for 20+ years have had tons of fun!
Questions? Contact Mrs. Zagar (azagar@vicksburgschools.org) or 269.321.1532.
