The War Cry
August 9, 2024
DCMS Families,
What a wonderful week it has been as we welcomed our students, families, and staff back for the 2024-2025 school year! Our staff returned on Monday, and it was great to see so many of you at our Meet the Teacher night on Tuesday. For me, the highlight was welcoming our students back on Wednesday, as the building truly came to life again!
Today, we celebrated the end of our first week with some exciting school-wide activities and games. I was truly impressed by how well our students have adjusted—they’ve been attentive, eager to learn about their classes and each other, and have done an excellent job following our school-wide expectations, some of which are new this year. We’ve really started the year on the right foot, and I’m confident it’s going to be a fantastic year at DCMS.
I’d also like to send a quick reminder about our school start times. Our doors open at 8:00 a.m. for students who will be eating breakfast at school. Students who do not eat at school will need to stay outside until 8:22 a.m. Please keep this in mind when scheduling your child’s arrival time. Rain or shine, this policy is a year-round expectation.
Today, around 850 students joined us in the gym for activities, and we had a great time together. Please take a moment to check out some of the pictures from our fun-filled day below.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

DCMS 24/25 Student Handbook
PLEASE READ-IMPORTANT CHANGES
Please check out the link below for the student-parent handbook. In light of some new state legislation policies, we've updated some of our expectations for students and families to stay in compliance. Notable changes can be found in Student Attendance, the Electronic Device Policy, and our Backpack policy. While the changes to our guidelines are not major, it is important that you are aware. If you have any questions about anything you read in the handbook, please reach out to our office for further guidance.
Back-to-School Drills
During the first few days of school, we will be conducting a fire drill, a tornado drill, and a lock down drill. We conduct these drills at the beginning of the year to make sure students understand our procedures and ensure all of our staff and faculty know how to best keep students safe in the event of an emergency. Sometimes drills can create anxiety for students as they start thinking about what a real emergency might be like, but it's important that if something happens, we all are prepared. We will continue to practice these drills monthly throughout the year to maintain and retain our procedures. Please have these conversations at home, as well, and let us know if you need our support in any way. We do our best to ease student concern and have positive conversations about practicing our emergency procedures.

- New Volunteer Background Check Procedures
- For the 2024-2025 school year, we are implementing a new procedure for volunteers. All new and existing volunteers will need to complete the Verkada application. This process consists of two steps: Step one involves filling out the application, and step two involves undergoing a background check. Step two is not required if a volunteer already has a current background check on file. Please view the file below for more information.

Nutrition Club
The Nutrition Club provides supplemental weekend food for children at North, South, and Middle School each Friday during the school year. We all struggle at some point. The goal of this program is to ease a bit of the struggle. You are welcome to sign-up at any point during the school year. The food will be sent home in a plastic bag that can fit inside a school backpack or be carried. You only complete one form per family. List all of your children that you would like to participate. Each child in your family will receive their own cinch sack or bag on Fridays throughout the school year. This program is the result of the generosity of the Danville community! Please contact Chrissy Larkin with any questions. clarkin9893@aol.com or 317-563-2498.
