CATCHING UP WITH... Mrs. Edmonston
Principal's Notes
Dear Coyote Families,
It has been another SPECTACULAR WEEK at Canyon View Elementary School. Here are some highlights: On Tuesday, we welcomed our families into the gates for the CVES Literacy Parade where students and staff paraded through the halls with costumes and books. On Wednesday morning, I enjoyed getting to know a few Canyon View parents in an informal setting at this year's first Coffee Chat with the Principal. On Wednesday afternoon, our Fifth Grade students learned line dancing in the MPR (Mrs. Tonga showed off her moves too!). On Thursday, our students enjoyed X-Plorations lessons highlighting Music and Physical Education. On Friday, our fourth and fifth grade students enjoyed a fieldtrip to the Ruben H. Fleet Science center where they watched the movie Dream Big in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater and participated in hands-on science and technology activities.
This week, I am excited to share a helpful resource for parents to learn more about our new math curriculum: Illustrative Mathematics. This program uses a problem-based instruction approach, which invites students to engage in problem solving in order to construct mathematical understanding. To learn more about problem-based instruction and PUSD's Illustrative Mathematics curriculum, take a few minutes to watch the math video below. PUSD also has created a Canvas Page with many helpful resources for parents. You can select your child's grade level and math unit to get a variety of resources that explain what your child is learning and how they are learning it. The link to that page is below.
Let's Make it a Great Year Together,
Mrs. Erica Edmonston (she/her/hers)
Principal, Canyon View Elementary School

Catching Up with... Campus Safety
With fire season upon us we want to assure parents and guardians that we have appropriate response systems in place when emergencies arise. Our first priority will always be the safety of our students and staff on campus.
When Canyon View becomes aware of any incidents in the geographic area of the school site, we will focus first on the safety of our campus while working with law enforcement, emergency responders, and the District for guidance and support for communication. Communication with parents is part of the response plan, but will be secondary to immediate safety. As soon as we can, we will message families with details of school-wide incidents such as lockdowns or evacuations. Please ensure your contact information is up to date in ParentVue in the “My Account” section.
Finally, we have been asked by first responders to remind our families NOT to come to campus in times of emergency – there have been several instances when officers, firefighters, and their ability to respond to the emergency have been hindered by parents rushing to the scene. We will send out messages about dismissal or reunification procedures for families when first responders indicate it is safe to do so.

Please complete the free/reduced-price meal application!
Although school meals are now free to all students, the application for free and reduced-price meals is still very important. School funding depends in part on the number of students at our school who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. With all students now eating for free, fewer families are completing the application and our school is at risk of losing much-needed educational funds. Plus, students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals may also qualify for discounts on bus transportation, before and after school care, and home internet!
Income qualifications change annually, so a new application is needed every school year. For school year 2023-2024, children from a family of four are eligible if the total gross (pre-tax) household income is less than $4,625 per month, or less than $55,500 per year. Household income information is confidential and applying online is quick and easy. Apply online at MySchoolApps.com, or pick up a paper application in the school office.

Artist in Residence: Science Instruction
Our Foundation funds the Science Artist in Residence Positions at Canyon View Elementary School to provide supplemental science instruction to our students. We are looking for someone with a science background who can provide science enrichment lessons to students in grades K-6, starting in December. Here is what Kate Recore, our current Science Artist in Residence has to say about this very special position: "I've been at Canyon View for 14 years, as a parent, a volunteer, a foundation president, and a substitute teacher. But, I have never loved the school more than I have as a science teacher. It has been a dream job for me, and I know whoever replaces me will feel the same way."

Catching Up with... Exceptional Family Resources

CATCHING UP WITH... Team CV
Foundation vs. PTO: What's the Difference?
Team Canyon View is a collaborative team comprised of the Canyon View Foundation and the PTO. Do you ever wonder ‘What’s the difference?’ While Team CV works closely together to create impactful experiences for our children, the two organizations fundraise for different things. The Foundation provides educational and enrichment opportunities and classes such as science, music, art, physical education, supplemental reading programs, technological improvements, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) enhancements such as our Innovation Station and health and safety programs. The PTO is our community building arm, providing events for families and students to create lasting and meaningful relationships with one another and their community. Each organization seeks to provide, in partnership with one another, equally important opportunities to foster well-roundedness for the development of our children.
