The Buzz
AUTUMN TERM -14TH NOVEMBER 2024
Message from the Head of School
We marked remembrance day on Monday with an assembly and I explained how proud we were of how many Hampton Infant School children took part in the parade on Sunday. Their behaviour was exemplary!
This week we have taken part in Anti Bullying week which asks us all to ‘choose respect’ from school to parliament and homes to our phones. Every child has decorated a pair of odd socks to form part of a whole school display. I will put a picture in the Buzz when it is complete. We are incredibly proud to be part of such a diverse community where difference is celebrated and we encourage children to show us inclusivity in their attitude towards their learning and their play.
As a partnership we have reviewed our Anti Bullying policy and I have included the link below. We look forward to all children wearing their odd socks in school on Friday to express themselves and their individuality. This week raises awareness of bullying across the country.
The definition of bullying is ‘the repetitive, intentional hurting of one person, or group, by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power’. This is not accepted at Hampton Infant School. Where a child makes a poor choice or chooses to be unkind, it is dealt with quickly and we support children to apologise and make better choices going forward.
Thank you to all who attended parent consultations this week. It was a great opportunity to share how well your children have settled into their class and how they are progressing with their learning. It was lovely to hear such positive feedback from parents.
We have put together a Christmas Calendar of Events as we are aware this is such a busy period. Please print a copy and put it on the fridge! We have started singing our Christmas songs in school. It is such a magical time of year in an Infant School.
Myself and Miss Berry will be taking a selection of Y1 and 2 children to sing at Linden Hall and Marling Court Care Home in Hampton in early December to share the magic of Christmas. A letter will follow for those children who have been selected.
Have a lovely weekend

Lost Property
Lost property is located in the entrance at the school office.
Please clearly label your child's school uniform as this makes it easier for staff to reunite children with lost property. Any unclaimed lost property at the end of each term will be donated to HPPA for resale at their second hand sale.
Amazon Wish Lists
We would like to thank everyone who has bought from our Amazon wish lists, this really makes such a difference to the children's learning. We will re-introduce the lists again in February 2025.

🟨 Nursery
An interesting week at Nursery. We have had lots of visitors this week, focusing around the 'People Who Help Us', especially around the school. We had Mr Boyce and Mr Quirk talk to us about how they keep us safe at home time with gate duty, and they are also super fixers and builders too. Mrs Cook came to see us too, explaining that she looks after all the children at Hampton Infants, making sure that everyone is happy and doing lots of wonderful learning! The children have been inspired by the wonderful discussion around how we can help people and have been using their incredible imagination to transform themselves into vets. The children have been so caring and kind to all the cuddly animals, really looking after them to help them feel better.
Also, thank you very much to Gatik's Mummy, who visited us to tell us about her family Diwali celebrations - we loved looking at all the beautiful and colourful diya lamps and rangoli patterns! Gatik's Mummy also gave us Diwali stickers as we all used our listening ears so amazingly!
In Maths this week, we have been using our knowledge on colour to create lots of patterns. We learnt that a pattern is something that gets repeated. We explored using two different colours to create an AB pattern, and noticed that we can also see these types of patterns in the world around us. We also explored different animal patterns, highlighting that some animals have spots and others have stripes.
I wonder where our learning will take us next week. Hint: our visitor for next week helps us keep safe as we cross the road! We wonder who that could be?
Time to talk Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
This week, you could talk to your child about people who help them. Can they think of anyone who helps them, at school, home or where they live? How do they help them? Why is it important to help others?
🟥 Reception
This week, our topic focus has been 'People who Help us'. The children have been learning how a range of different people help look after us and keep us safe, including police officers, fire fighters, refuse workers, doctors, members of the Armed Forces and more. We have arranged visits from key members of the school and local community including Mrs Lockey, Mrs Cook and Toby the Lollipop Man. The children have loved speaking to them. On Remembrance Day we spoke about why we wear poppies on the 11th November.
In phonics we are continuing to practise reading and writing our new sounds 'b', 'c', 'g', and 'h' while in maths we are using a Teddy Bear's Picnic to explore looking at sharing objects equally between three. The children enjoyed making sure our bears each had the same amount of cake!

🟦 Year 1
At this poignant time of year, year 1 have been remembering those who have fought and lost their lives in various wars whilst protecting their countries. We watched a short, children’s animated story about the poppy fields and discussed our feelings and the importance of commemorating such events of the past.
In English, we have continued to focus on the story ‘Beegu’ by Alexis Deacon. We received a letter from Beegu, describing her classroom and playground on ‘Planet Pleg’. We then used adjectives to create a setting description of our classroom and playground.
In science, we have continued with our topic of materials, identifying what different objects are made from. We can name lots of different materials and have started to describe their features, e.g. whether they are hard or soft, rough or smooth, transparent or opaque, waterproof or absorbent. We have been using our knowledge of materials and their properties to discuss why or why not particular materials are chosen to make certain objects, e.g. glass for windows.
In geography, we are continuing to study our local area and its features. We have been focusing on the areas surrounding our school, and started by looking at and labelling a map of the school grounds. We have also been studying maps in general, identifying key features and symbols to show different landmarks and points of interest.
In maths, we have been focusing on subtraction. We have been using various methods, including taking away, breaking apart, counting on to find the difference and counting back using number lines. We have been using our part-whole models and ten frames to help us subtract one number from another and have begun recording our answers as number sentences in various ways. We have started using this to look at a number family, by creating 8 calculations from just 3 numbers!
🟩 Year 2
It’s been another exciting week in Year 2. We had a fantastic time participating in our Laser Lion sessions, filled with fun and energy. 2P especially enjoyed their trip to the library, where they explored lots of new books.
In English, we have been letting our imaginations soar as we embarked on a journey through the rainforest. We described everything we could see, hear, and feel, painting a vivid picture of the experience. Our focus was on using expanded noun phrases, and we made sure to include plenty of exciting adjectives to bring the rainforest to life in our writing.
In maths this week, we have been concentrating on adding 2-digit numbers. We started by using our knowledge of place value to break each number down into tens and ones, allowing us to add the parts more easily. By partitioning the numbers, we could clearly see how each digit contributed to the total. We also used dienes to deepen our understanding and make the process more visual, which helped us represent the numbers physically.
In science, we have been learning all about life cycles! We began by discussing the different stages humans go through, from babies to adults, and the changes that happen along the way. Next, we explored the life cycle of a frog and compared its stages to humans. The children then had a fantastic time creating their own representations of a frog's life cycle, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
In geography, we have been expanding our knowledge of the United Kingdom by becoming geography detectives! We looked at a range of intriguing pictures showcasing different landmarks and features from across the UK. Working in groups, we carefully examined each image and discussed the clues to determine which country it belonged to—England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. The children worked really well as a team.
In Art, we have continued exploring colour, with a particular focus on complementary colours. We began by studying abstract portraits, analysing how different colours are used to create contrasts and enhance the artwork. Inspired by these portraits, the children then created their own self-portraits, applying their understanding of complementary colours to add vibrant, eye-catching shades to their work. We were very impressed with their results.
