Swann Lion Times

The end of the quarter and semester is coming fast! Please take some time to check PowerSchool and Canvas with your student this weekend and discuss their grades with them. Be sure to reach out to your child's teachers with any questions sooner than later!

In 6th grade, our Lions are working on dividing in Math, learning about ancient China in Social Studies, studying energy transfer and waves in Science, and finishing writing their space research papers in ELA.

In 7th grade, our Lions are studying cells in Science, rational number arithmetic in Math, the Russian Revolution in Social Studies, and research writing in ELA.

In 8th grade, our Lions are learning about migration patterns in Social Studies, finishing their research unit in ELA, studying the the water table in Science, and working with linear equations in Math.

6th grade mathematicians explored how to find how many groups there are when the amount in each group is not a whole number. Using what they learned, use the diagram to answer the question: How many 1/3 are in 1 2/3? The hexagon represents 1 whole. Explain or show your reasoning.

7th grade mathematicians learned how to use rational numbers to represent speed and direction. Using what they learned, solve the following problems. An airplane moves at a constant speed of 120 miles per hour for 3 hours. How far does it go? A train moves at constant speed and travels 6 miles in 4 minutes. What is its speed in miles per minute? A car moves at a constant speed of 50 miles per hour. How long does it take the car to go 200 miles?

8th grade mathematicians talked how to solve an equation where the variable appears on both sides. A participant in a 21-mile walkathon walks at a steady rate of 3 miles per hour. He thinks, “The relationship between the number of miles left to walk and the number of hours I already walked can be represented by a line with slope -3” Do you agree with his claim? Explain your reasoning.

This week our Lions worked more on their Andy Warhol-inspired paintings, played field hockey, had their health classes, performed in the 6th grade band concert, practiced music from Frozen, and much more! Ask your student all about what they are doing in their Encore classes!

This month, the Swann Pride is focusing on HONESTY! Brainstorm with your child what honesty means to them. How do you demonstrate honesty at home? At school? Why is being honest important in your family? With your friends? With your teachers?
