CMAS Testing Information for 3rd-5th Grade MSES Families
Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful Spring Break and enjoyed time with family. It was great to see everyone at parent-teacher conferences and celebrate the incredible growth our students are making. Thank you for your ongoing support!
Starting April 7th, students in grades 3-5 will take the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) assessments in Math or English Language Arts and 5th grade Science on their iPads. These assessments help teachers, schools, and families understand student progress and ensure instruction aligns with academic standards.
To help your child succeed, please:
- Ensure they attend school daily unless they are ill; avoid appointments or pull outs during the testing times
- Make sure they get plenty of rest and eat a healthy breakfast
- Encourage them to do their best and take their time
- Remind them that you are proud of their hard work and effort
CMAS Testing Schedule:
Testing will occur from April 7th – April 18th, starting at 8:20 A.M. with multiple sessions until 12:30 P.M. Please schedule any appointments outside of testing hours to ensure your child has the best opportunity for success.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Sueppel at jsueppel@mssd14.org. Thank you for your support!

Intent to Return
We ask that all parents and guardians complete the Intent to Return Survey as to whether or not your student will attend MSSD14 for the 2025-2026 school year.
Please complete one form for each student currently enrolled at MSSD14. For additional submissions, a link will be available to begin the survey again after submitting responses.
Parents/Guardians of graduating seniors do not need to complete this survey.
All parents and/or guardians of returning students will receive instructions to complete the 2025-2026 Returning Student Registration Form in the beginning of July. The Returning Student Registration will need to be completed prior to the first day of school on Friday, August 15, 2025.

Your participation in this survey is appreciated.
Kindergarten
Our kindergarteners have been busy exploring our community! We visited important places like the post office, police station, library, and school kitchen to learn about the people who help our community run smoothly. After our adventures, we created maps to show where we’ve been and what we discovered.
We also learned about holidays—why we celebrate special people and traditions. Your kindergartner even had the chance to dream up a holiday of their own!
In Dinosaur School, we’ve been working on managing our emotions, especially learning strategies to calm down when we feel angry. Ask your child about the tools they’ve learned to help with big feelings!
It’s been an exciting time of learning and growing!
1st Grade
First grade has been busy learning about how stories teach us lessons. Students spent time reading about the lessons different characters learned, we made connections to previous stories, and wrote about the lessons the characters taught us. We are beginning to learn to compare and contrast stories, find key details, and summarize stories in our own words. We had a blast spending time creating our own "Inch Town" where we built and measured everything we put in our towns as a cumulative activity to finish our measurement module. Next up is place value. In writing we are learning ways to make our words more interesting by using conjunctions.
Kid Power came in and taught us ways to keep ourselves safe. Our favorite books were brought from home and read in our classroom while we were cozy in our jammies. Buddies celebrated Read Across Manitou with us and helped us read some of our favorite books. We enjoyed the warmer weather by chillaxin in the sun. Cave of the Winds was our first field trip and lots of lots of fun things are on the horizon in Quarter 4.

Math has been fun and hands-on as we explored the hierarchy of quadrilaterals which involved cutting, pasting and quite a bit of mess! We now understand that even if the sides of a rectangle are fractional lengths, we can still apply length x width to find the area. We are excited for the 4th and final quarter of elementary school!
Art
3D Forms
Third to fifth grade artists are actively using their math skills in art as they transform 2-dimensional shapes into 3-dimensional forms.
Third grade artists are creating paper stars using precise folding into fractions.
Fourth grade artists designed lanterns from putting together 2-dimensional constructed frames into 3-dimensional forms.
Fifth grade artists are turning 2-dimensional shapes into 3-dimensional forms using one point perspective.
Lantern Festival
Fourth grade artists have been busy making paper lanterns for this year’s annual lantern festival hosted by Concrete Couch. We have been fortunate to have artist, Becky Pontz, join our art classes this month to help us with our lantern building. Join us on April 4th at Memorial Park in Manitou Springs starting at 7:30pm as we parade with our lanterns through downtown Manitou ending at Soda Springs Park.

Spanish
Kindergarten students learned the story of the "Ugly Duckling" in Spanish, practicing vocabulary related to the family. Vocabulary: The Ugly Duckling... sad, happy, pretty, ugly. They continue practicing the days of the week and the months of the year. Big, Small.
First grade students learned the story of the "Ugly Duckling" in Spanish. This topic has content about emotions in Spanish (sad, happy, ugly, pretty), which was applied to the topic of family (dad, mom.) Vocabulary: El patito no es feo (the duckling is not ugly), El patito es feliz (the duckling is happy). Students continue learning numbers and vowels in Spanish.
Second grade learned the story of the "Ugly Duckling" in Spanish. Vocabulary: positions left and right, ugly, pretty, sad, happy. They continued learning the months of the year in Spanish. What is your favorite month? Using numbers, for example, "How old are you?" Culturally, the students learned about tropical fruits and were surprised to learn about the cashew seed and its iron-rich fruit, "El Marañón."
Third grade learned the story of The Ugly Duckling in Spanish, applying vocabulary related to family and feelings. They are reading the book "The Hen Says," which is about emotions in Spanish. Some of the vocabulary words are ugly, pretty, sad, happy, angry, good, bad, siblings, father, mother.
Fourth grade students studied the topic of family members and practiced sentences about family members. They continued learning about numbers and colors, feminine and masculine, and articles (a girl and a boy, the girl and the boy). Culturally, they learned about the tropical cashew nut seed and created Day of the Dead cultural art for the Night of Excellence.
Fifth grade students completed the Places unit and they are excited about holding a contest, "The Scarf and the Places." All students have the opportunity to participate; it is not mandatory. Following the sequence of the family theme, the students practiced sentences on the topic "Rosita and the Frog's Family." Culturally, the students learned about tropical fruits and were surprised by the cashew seed and its iron-rich fruit, "El Marañón." For the purpose of reading comprehension in the next unit, students are learning vocabulary such as: This is not mine. / It's an excellent idea.

Tech Corner: How Are Kids Using Media Today?
You might be surprised. Common Sense’s newest national survey of parents with children 0-8 years old offers some interesting insights. Kids are as connected as ever, but how screen time is being used is changing.
Here are some highlights:
By age 2, four in 10 children have their own tablet (40%).
By age 4, more than half (58%) of children have their own tablet.
By age 8, one in four children have their own cellphone.
Average screen time remains steady at about 2.5 hours per day, similar to findings from the last survey in 2020.
Gaming time has surged 65% since 2020, and traditional TV viewing has declined, while short-form video platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts are on the rise.
About one in five children use mobile devices for emotional regulation, mealtimes, or to fall asleep.
Parent supervision varies significantly by platform, with 62% of parents watching YouTube occasionally alongside their children, but only 17% co-viewing TikTok content.
AI is making inroads into early childhood, with nearly one-third of parents reporting their child has used AI for school-related learning.
