Stanwood Middle School
Family Update - September 12th, 2020
Once again we have lots of information for our families in this message! The most important information is for our 6th grade students and any 7th and 8th grade students that are new to Stanwood Middle School. Please see the information below regarding our PTO t-shirt handout this Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Stanwood Middle School will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please call the office at 360.629.1350 if you have questions, need information or need to speak to any of us. We are trying to limit the number of people in our building at this time so we appreciate you calling or emailing instead of stopping by in person. If you have to stop by the building please call into the office first.
You can pick up a chromebook anytime between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Just call the office and they can help arrange a time.
Please continue to reach out to teachers if you have specific questions regarding class, but we can also help in the office.
Have a great weekend!

Special Handout Tuesday for 6th graders and New Students to SMS!!
These go out to incoming 6th graders and any new 7th and 8th grade students to our school.
Jenni will be seated out front (rain or shine). Just drive up and give your student name and she will make sure you get the right size and record your name!
Don't worry if Tuesday doesn't work for your parent/guardian to come in, we will have another pick up day soon depending on how many are given out Tuesday.
We had Class Meetings this past Wednesday!!
Our class meetings are a weekly connection that Ms. Christmas, Ms. Fox, and I really enjoy. We will meet every Wednesday as a class and go through some of the fun things students can do virtually (it is coming soon), helpful hints about how to survive and thrive during this time, and our weekly Character Dares. Sixth graders meet at 11:15 a.m. with code sms2027, seventh graders meet at 12:15 p.m. with code sms2026, and eighth graders meet at 1:15 p.m. with code sms2025.
On weeks we have advisory, students will be in the class meeting for about 15 minutes before they go meet with their advisory teacher. As part of our commitment to Social Emotional Learning this year, class meetings and advisory are foundational for connecting with all Spartans.

A message from our counselor Mrs. Fox!
This is going to be a great school year, even if it’s an unusual one! I am looking forward to joining your classes from time to time, setting up some great opportunities online and in groups, and meeting with you individually to support your success. There are hard parts of this unusual time, and there are also opportunities for unique growth. We will get through this together, as kind humans and with strong SMS Spartan Spirit!
I want to make sure that all students and families know how to contact me — and some of the ways I can support your success.
-The easiest and quickest way to contact me right now is by email at KFox@stanwood.wednet.edu. I do my best to reply to emails within 24-48 hours during the week. You can also call or text me on my work cell phone at 360-421-2556.
-If you would like to schedule a meeting, we can meet either online via Google Meet, or by telephone. Both are great options! If you would like to meet, please email me your preferred days and times to meet during the school days, and I will reply to schedule our meeting.
-I support students in many ways, including with time management, study skills, social emotional learning, peer conflict, and stress management, including the stressors of the pandemic. My role is designed to be relatively short-term, which means that I also refer students to mental health and other community resources at times, as well as to our Student Support Advocate. I also manage 504 Plans, work on student schedules, teach occasional lessons, and I work with families as needed to support students.
My approach with students is positive, kind, and realistic, with an orientation towards growth, problem solving, and creative thinking. I am a big fan of self-care, healthy coping strategies, and easy-to-use tools to help make students’ academic and social-emotional lives more positive and successful.
Here are a few images to keep in mind as we start this school year, along with one of my favorite memories from this summer — I hope you had a fun and healthy summer. I look forward to seeing you all soon!
In case you missed it last time, here is our Open House Staff Slideshow - 2020/2021
Typically a big part of our Open House is our introduction of staff in the gym and then students are able to tour the building and see those staff members in the classrooms. Because we are not able to be in person this year Mr. Wall, our wonderful multimedia, yearbook and keyboarding teacher, has put together a slideshow to allow families to see faces, to see what peoples roles are in the building, and to see contact information for everyone!
