If you are a senior or senior parent, keep your eyes peeled for an informational email later this week about graduation and end-of-year activities for seniors.

For everyone else, it is that time of year to start preparing for registration for next year's classes. If you would like to take a look at our course guide for next year, please use this link. Just as a reminder, based on student requests and teacher availability, some courses may end up not being offered.

A portion of a student’s graduation requirements is to have a High School and Beyond Plan. OHHS has joined forces with Xello to help students create one in their advisory. We are excited to use this tool in the process of assisting students in planning their courses for their entire high school career. If you are interested, here is an introductory link to the program.

Your students have already been using Xello as part of their Advisory class. They have had lessons to complete to help with their career planning process. Your students have the ability to share their Xello link with you so that you can see what they are doing.

We will also be using Xello to register for next year's classes. In April, students in grades 9-11 will be working with their advisors and our master scheduling team to request courses for next year. They will also have the ability to request classes for subsequent years. We will be starting with Juniors on Wednesday, April 14th, followed by Sophomores on Wednesday, April 21st, and Freshmen on April 28th. We are still firming up the dates for this year's 8th-grade students and will keep you informed on those.

We are excited to kick off this new program with our students and staff and start scheduling for next year!

Wear Purple on April 15 in honor of Purple UP for military kids day.

Purple Up! day is not a national holiday, so there are no school closings, days off from work, or post office closures.

There’s an emphasis in the United States military culture on “the total force”, the “whole person concept” and similarly-themed philosophies that hold that troops, their families, and their extended families are more than the sum of their parts.

The notion of the “total force” should rightfully include families as they are the lifeline between military service (especially overseas) and the individual officers or enlisted members.

With that in mind, former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger established the Month of the Military Child as a Department of Defense-wide commemoration in 1986.

ASVAB - We will offer the ASVAB on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. Sign Up Here.

The ASVAB stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test, which is a multiple-choice test that measures strengths and potential for success in military training. The ASVAB CEP (Career Exploration Program) is a complete career planning program. Students are given the opportunity to take the ASVAB at no cost and no commitment to military service. The ASVAB CEP also provides an interest assessment and planning tools to help young adults explore career field entry requirements and various career paths, both military and civilian. High school students in grades 10, 11, and 12 can participate in the ASVAB CEP. Students in 11th grade and beyond receive valid scores for enlistment.

The ASVAB can also be used to meet a graduation pathway.

Students who sign up will receive specific testing instructions prior to the exam. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the high school. Check-in time will be 7:30 a.m.

Running Start Information Session- Skagit Valley College will have a virtual information session on the Running Start Program Tuesday, April 20, 2021, from 6:00 PM-7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, May 25, 2021, from 12:00 p.m. Sign up here Students and parents interested in learning more about the Running Start program should plan to attend.

SAT Testing – Oak Harbor High School will be offering a School Day SAT w/out Essay on Tuesday, April 27th. Prepare for the SAT by taking the SAT Practice Test. Students can Sign up here through their school account. There are a few seats left for this exam. Payment can be made at OHHS in the cashier's office. Space is not secure until payment has been made.

We plan to host the October 2, 2021 exam this fall.

One of the strengths of the CharacterStrong curriculum is the relationships it builds between students to peers, students and school staff, students and family, and students and the greater community. This is done through intentional relationship-building activities that put a daily and weekly focus on what is most important to making this happen. We need to be reminded more than we need to be taught.

Show Honesty:

Confess to a family member something you need to let go of today and resolve to make it right.

Family Discussion:

During a family meeting or dinner, discuss the topic of honesty. Then ask the following questions:

Why do people cheat on tests or when they play a game?

Is it ever okay to lie?

Say one of your friends tells an unkind joke about another person. It bothers you, but you laugh anyway. Are you being dishonest?

Legacy Dance is putting together a Virtual Showcase event to be released on May 21st. If you have a favorite dance you’d like to show off, or if you love to dance and would like to participate in this event, please do the following:

1/ Find or choreograph a dance that is between 1 and 3 minutes long.

2/ Create a video of yourself (or of you and your friends) dancing. If there are multiple people in your video, please make sure you are all wearing face masks.

*Important: Your music must be clean (aka, no swearing or inappropriate references), and your background and costumes/attire must be school-appropriate. Please submit videos to Ms. Champi (lchampi@ohsd.net) by April 30th for initial approval. Final videos will then be due by May 7th.

The Ancestry club is a place where students have an opportunity to share their family roots. They can tell stories about who their ancestors were and how they contributed to the world.

Meetings are held every Friday at 2:30 p.m.

In addition to our twelve student competitors who have qualified to compete at the SkillsUSA State competition and have been featured on the District's FB pages, for the 3rd year in a row, the OHHS SkillsUSA Chapter has been selected as a Gold Level Chapter of Distinction! We are the only school in Washington to receive this award for 2021!! We will be recognized at both the State and National Conferences for this achievement.

On Wednesdays this year, you will have school, but it will be asynchronous.

Asynchronous refers to a school day without live online learning. You will still be meeting with your Advisory Teachers from 9:50 am-10:20 am. This will be the only live meeting on Wednesdays. What you do need to get done, however, is the work that is posted on each teacher’s Google Classroom page. That is how you will both be counted for attendance, and do the assignments that will earn you that grade that you work so hard for. So make sure that you are getting on to the Classroom page, complete, and submit those tasks on Wednesdays.

4 OHHS artworks were selected out of our regional ESD189 show and moved on to be one of the 120 finalists at the OSPI state show in Olympia. Though competition is fierce at the state level and only 16 top pieces from thousands of WA student art pieces are selected, we were fortunate to have more pieces than any other ESD 189 school advance and are hopeful for the continued success of the following students and pieces:

As more diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are made annually, it is more important than ever to be aware of our ASD community. The CDC’s 2016 statistics show that 1 out of every 54 children in the US was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

To help bring awareness to this cause, students from the Exceptional Academy are offering to decorate office doors to help “Shine a Light” on Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Why is it so important to “Shine a Light” on Autism Awareness?

“Worldwide, people with ASD are often subject to stigma, discrimination and human rights violations. Globally, access to services and support for people with ASD is inadequate.” WHO Facts on ASD

The Exceptional Academy

The Academic Letter program sponsored by the PTO (previously OHHS PTA) since 1995 will have to suspend the traditional way we have acknowledged the students who have earned an Academic Letter. We have to make this change due to the lack of fundraising ability last spring, possibly this spring, and the low membership from parents and staff.

If you feel you have earned an Academic Letter, you will need to contact the PTO directly (not the counseling office), and we will prepare a certificate for you and have the letter in the office for pick-up. This would be for the year 2019-2020 T1, T2, T3. The PTO has not received the report for Fall 2020 T1 but will soon.

To earn an Academic Letter, you have to be

1. Ranked with your cohort class

2. Have earned a 3.5 or better GPA for 3 consecutive trimesters

3. Enrolled as a full-time student

To earn a Continuing Excellence Bar

1. Already have earned an Academic Letter

2. Be enrolled as a full-time student

3. Earn a 3.5 GPA for the trimester
