6th Grade Information
In 6th grade science, students are investigating the macronutrients of food so they can understand how food can affect their health and well-being. Reading ingredient labels and looking at the health impacts of a balanced (or unbalanced) diet would be a good conversation at home.
In 6th grade social studies, students are beginning a project called Create a Country. This project involves selecting one of the major types of government and writing a set of laws to govern their country. In addition, students will be creating features such as a flag, map, and national anthem to accompany their country projects.
Ms. Baldwin’s 6th grade English students learned more about droughts, famines, and schools in Malawi. One thing she really wanted to bring to students attention was that while they have the right to an education, it is a privilege to Malawians to get an education. To further this understanding, students are participating in a bit of a experiment. Her classroom currently has no furniture, electricity, or enough school supplies for every student to have their own. If a student isn't putting in the effort in their Malawian school, they are kicked out and forced to go plow fields (push awkward carts around the school, carry heavy totes).
In Math, 6th graders launched their unit on Equations and Expressions with a visit from a Djinni. By accepting the Djinni’s challenge, students had to decide if they should take a lump sum of gold coins or if it would be a better to choose a magic coin that increases exponentially for a certain number of days. Throughout this activity, students have en”rich”ed their knowledge of exponents and how they are used to represent repeated multiplication. To help students distinguish between repeated addition and repeated multiplication, parents can help reinforce these concepts at home by contrasting numerical and real-life examples of each. Up next, students will be investigating an alleged traffic violation to explore writing and solving algebraic expressions and formulas.
