Summer Reading Program Updates

Thanks to your input, we will be returning to the Explorer Cards instead of individual museum passes for the SRP incentive coupon program. We are working on securing participation from local attractions and will have the cards ready in May.

The 2018 manuals are available online. Information about the access code for the manual was sent to each library's SRP contact in November. If you did not receive this information, please contact me.

In early March, RIDE promoted the SRP to public school principals with an introductory email and a list of public library contacts (only librarians who opted in were listed). The flyer below was included with the email. You may edit this flyer for use in your own library - just please include the OLIS credit line.

Listserv Changes

In the next week, the children's listserv and YART listerv will be combined as a single Google group. This Google group will be named RI Youth Services and will function as our youth services listserv at ri-youth@googlegroups.com. There is nothing you need to do - the mailing list from both litservs will be transferred to the new group. You will receive an email from ri-youth@googlegroups.com once the RI Youth Services Google group is active. We will be able to retain the archives from the current children's Google group, but may not be able to retain the archives from the YART listserv. If you think there are messages you would like to save from the YART listserv, please check the archives at http://listserve.ri.gov/pipermail/yart/.

Día is April 30th

El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day) is quickly approaching. Planning a celebration? Visit the Día website for programming and planning resources, a press kit, graphics, and to register your program. Author Pat Mora has also made available a Día planning booklet brimming with ideas and resources for hosting a celebration.

April Mock Newbery Read-Along

Join the Mock Newbery Goodreads group read-along! Each month we'll pick a book published in 2018 to read and virtually discuss in preparation for creating our first 2019 reading list.

April's book is Me, Frida and the Secret of the Peacock Ring by Angela Cervantes.

Family Engagement with NLS and Talking Books

The Rhode Island Talking Books Library (TBL), with funding from the National Library Service, provides reading materials and equipment to Rhode Island residents who are visually impaired, blind or physically handicapped and unable to read standard print materials. Promote intergenerational reading by having TBL information and applications available at storytimes and book discussions.

Reading Power

Join us for the first Reading Power mini-conference, sponsored by the Afterschool Leadership Circle and the Office of Library and Information Services. Reading Power is a day-long professional development event bringing together afterschool professionals and youth services librarians to address the literacy and learning needs of children in grades K through 5.


Reading Power 2018 includes workshops that not only integrate literacy with topics such as STEM, social justice, social emotional learning, but that also tackle broader learning issues, such as school partnerships, stress management, and challenging behaviors. We are also very pleased to have 2016 Rhode Island Teacher of the Year Tracy LaFreniere as our speaker for the morning's plenary session!


Please pre-register by April 2nd. When registering, you will be asked to indicate your workshop preferences for both the morning and afternoon session. This event is free and open to all afterschool and youth services staff. Please note that registration is limited to 3 people per organization/library.

Many libraries are jumping on the virtual reality train, and bringing this popular and exciting technology into their library programs. This workshop will focus on using virtual reality in a purposeful and meaningful way to enhance library programs, so that you are next left asking, "now what?" once you acquire this technology. This workshop will also provide hands-on opportunities to try out virtual reality systems and develop potential program ideas to bring back to your library.

Teen SRP 2017 Highlights/Summer Reading Program Forum

It's time to revisit summer 2017 as we finalize planning for the 2018 Summer Reading Program. What favorite program from 2017 will be reappearing on your 2018 calendar? Or are lessons learned from 2017 inspiring you to completely overhaul your program? Please come prepared to share.


The last hour of the meeting will be reserved for a discussion of the Office of Library & Information's (OLIS) support of the Summer Reading Program (SRP). What do you value about how OLIS currently supports the SRP? How can OLIS help strengthen your program? Please share your SRP challenges and fresh ideas for OLIS support!
