Principal Letter
Dear NRE Families,
We’re excited to remind you that Multicultural Night is happening tonight from 5 PM to 7 PM! If you’re reading this during those hours, I hope you’ll put this message aside and head over to the school to join us in celebrating all of the wonderful families that make NRE special. I can’t wait to share pictures of the event in next week’s blast.
In other news, our cafeteria team has been doing an incredible job. Last year alone, they served a staggering 28,241 breakfasts and 62,272 lunches. It’s hard to imagine the amount of preparation, care, and hard work that goes into feeding so many students and staff every day. We couldn’t do it without the help of parent volunteers, and together, this team makes NRE an even better place to be. It’s moments like these that remind us how strong our community truly is.
Speaking of going above and beyond, I received a little hair makeover this week thanks to Layla, one of our wonderful 6th graders. If you’ve seen me around school, you know I like to have fun with my hair. Layla gave me five stripes of blue tinsel, and I love it! Layla is a natural leader, always with a smile on her face, and she’s consistently helping others. Just this week, after Taylor Swift Club baked cookies, she stayed late to help clean up all the dishes. Thank you, Layla, for your kindness and leadership!
Our 2nd grade students had a fantastic time visiting the Highlands Ranch Mansion, where they continued learning about our local community. The students listened to tour guides explain the history of the mansion, which dates back to 1884, and saw details preserved from the last owner in the 1970s. If you’d like to visit, the mansion is open to the public and hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Check out their website for more information.
The PTO also found a fun way to show appreciation to our staff this week with a scratch-off event! It’s been a busy start to the school year, and this is just one of the many ways PTO lets our teachers know how much they are valued. Staff got to scratch off a card (think lottery ticket) and they either got "you are loved" or that they won a gift card. Staff loved the fun we had in the middle of the week and even our SRO Ben got to participate (see picture below).
Lastly, I want to share a heartwarming story. A 1st grade student recently drew a beautiful picture and her parent emailed me, saying, “I attribute this to you and your dedication to kindness at NRE. It’s making a lasting impression on my daughter, and we’re so thankful.” Hearing this really touched me, and it’s a reminder that when we talk about kindness, our students are listening. In fact, this parent also shared that during a recent Virtual Community Chat with Superintendent Kane, their daughter saw me and said, “That’s Ms. Lynch! She’s so kind!” It’s moments like these that make all the difference. Let’s continue spreading kindness—it’s something we all need, now more than ever.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
~Katie

District News and Updates
Mental Health Resources: September is National Suicide Prevention Month
DCSD utilizes a research-based Suicide Assessment Protocol. The assessment protocol draws on the work from the American Association of Suicidology, National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), Applied Suicide Intervention Skill Training (ASIST 11) Manual and Protocol, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), The Trevor Project Model School District Policy on Suicide Prevention, and the work of Dr. Scott Poland. Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is required training for all school psychologists, school social workers, and school counselors in DCSD. Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) is an additional suicide training available to staff. The DCSD suicide assessment protocol provides clarity in procedures and documentation, and assures increased attention to providing services and ongoing monitoring to students at risk for suicide.
All schools have trained mental health professionals and nurses in suicide assessment protocol. With any suicide assessment or intervention, staff work closely with parents to develop a plan to keep the student safe when at home, and remind parents and guardians of the importance of:
Calling 911 or law enforcement, if needed
Removing the means to suicide
Providing adult supervision until the student’s safety is established
Providing crisis line information on a Parent Tip Sheet
Coordinating care with outside providers (if applicable)
DCSD Strategic Planning - Parent Voices Needed
The Douglas County School District is beginning a new strategic planning process. Help us make sure that the voice of our school’s families is included in conversations about what we want our school district to look like in the next 5 years, 10 years and beyond. Your voice is critical in determining how we can best prepare our students for successful futures so they can lead the way in a world that is quickly evolving in terms of jobs and technology. Please attend an upcoming meeting to learn more and to provide your voice to this important conversation. Click here for a list of meeting dates, times and location and for an RSVP link. Dinner will be provided at the evening sessions.
