Dear Tiger Families,
May is here!!! The end of the school year is near!!! As we step forward into the final 29 days of the 2023-24 school year, weโre preparing for the great activities yet to come. Speaking of great activities, thank you to everyone that came to help beautify the school last month. It was great to see so many families and members of the community come out to support the school. We hope next year we're able to have more of these days. Also, you can now pre-order the 2023-2024 school yearbook in the main office. This yearbook will help students remember their classmates, school events and activities, academic achievements, and trends of the time.
There are many celebrations in the month of May. One of the most important celebrations in the month of May is Motherโs Day. Our children are already working on special cards and treats to make this special day memorable for our wonderful moms! I personally want to say Happy Motherโs Day to our wonderful moms. May you enjoy your day this month and have a day of honor with your family.
Memorial Day is also celebrated this month, a United States Federal holiday that commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in military service for their country. Our school will be closed in honor of Memorial day on Monday May 27th.
We will also be celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week May 6-10 and Classified Appreciation Week May 20-24. I hope you join us in celebrating the wonderful teachers and classified staff here at Gascon Elementary! We are also having our first JGE Swap Meet, Saturday May 11th from 8-1p.m. Lastly, we will also be celebrating those who have given back to our school at the Honorโs Breakfast happening May 22. Our volunteers have dedicated their time and energy to supporting Gascon students by spending time in classrooms, chaperoning field trips, donating resources and much more.
Included in this month, we will be having our Elementary AVID Showcase, Open House, Scholastic Book Fair, Career Day, and much more. Please read the bulletin for more information. Please stay tuned for more information as we complete this great school year!

New Student Registration For 2024-2025
The Montebello Unified School District is excited to announce the PowerSchool online student enrollment system for the 2024-2025 school year is now open. This will be for NEW students enrolling in the Montebello Unified School District.
This website is the first step in the process to enroll a new TK-12 student for school. Information about the student such as emergency contacts, medical, and language will be collected. Upon completion, the student's information will be sent to the school.
2023-2024 Yearbook
Attention students and families, you may now pre-order your 2023-2024 Yearbook in the main office!!! We are only ordering a limited number of yearbooks so come pre-order your yearbook now. This yearbook will help you remember your classmates, school events and activities, academic achievements, and trends of the time. So come pre-order yours now while supplies last. Cash only!
National Teacher Appreciation Week May 6-10; National Teachers Day, May 7
This year, weโre celebrating how Teacher Appreciation Week from May 6-10. Teachers play a critical role in driving the success of our childrenโs education and lives. They are the ones who inspire and guide our kids to become future leaders, innovators and problem solvers.
Join us this Teacher Appreciation Week as we honor the amazing educators who drive the future leaders of tomorrow! Let's show our support for our childrenโs educators and tell them how much their commitment and dedication to our children is so appreciated.
Classified School Employee Appreciation Week, May 20-24
Classified School Employee Week celebrates the support staff and paraprofessionals who help our early childhood centers, schools, and colleges succeed. Classified employees perform essential work, but it is often behind the scenes. This is our week to put classified work front and center.
Classified School Employee Week is celebrated in the third full week in May of each year, from Sunday to Saturday.
10 Ways to Prepare Your Child for Kindergarten
- Read books everyday.
- Develop fine motor skills: holding a pencil, coloring, cutting witch scissors.
- Print first name with only the first letter capatalized.
- Learn to follow 2-step instructions: "Please go get your shoes and then put them on."
- Use good manners: "Please" and "Thank You"
- Talk about social skills: sharing, taking turns, positive words, talk about handling anger.
- Help your child take responsibility: clean up messes, dress themselves, get their own snacks.
- Practice number recognition: Count objects daily.
- Practice letter and sound recognition. Practice saying the letters and thier sounds every day.
- Build self-esteem. Praise your child often because Kindergarten is hard!
Cafecito and Conversations
The City of Commerce Public Library wants to invite adults and parents to attend ESL conversation classes called Cafecito and Conversations. These classes are being held in two different locations: Veterans Library on Thursdays at 3:00 pm and the City of Commerce Public Library in the READs Center on Wednesdays at 10:30 am. In these classes, you will have discussions over coffee after reading articles from easy-reader newspapers. The purpose of this is to encourage participants to talk about current events and build confidence in practicing English in a safe setting. These classes will be held for 6 weeks. Adults can attend the class times that best fit their schedule, and if they would like they can attend both times being offered.

Youth Karate Program
The Young Champions Outreach program combines safety awareness education with self-defense instruction. Emphasis is placed on the learning of physical and verbal skills for self-defense. Students learn break-aways and defense techniques for close contact. Weekly safety awareness information addresses the lures strangers use to attract and abduct children and teens! Students' progress in rank and learn their belts! This program welcomes students from any style. Medals are awarded for particpation.
Action Youth America (AYA) After-School Program
Action Youth America (AYA), formerly known as ICES Education has been serving California families for over 30 years, providing top quality service in academics, sports, and other areas of education. Our programs are built upon the foundation of excellence and time-tested methods that have allowed us to be one of the leading providers of before and after-school programs in the United States.
The AYA program is academically driven as we understand the need for providing complementary academic support to the instructional day in order for students to meet their full potential. Our academic coordinator Stefanie is responsible for assuring optimal academic alignment to school and district needs. The AYA staff is formally trained on Common Core learning expectations and write, or can assist in writing a curriculum around the principles of Common Core. Additionally, the AYA staff works with interventions, state testing prep camps, and modeling/training.
