Wild Cat ROAR!
Steuart W. Weller Elementary Weekly Newsletter
A Message from the Principal:
December 9, 2024
Dear Weller Families:
Be sure to check out the great PTO discounts that are attached to the newsletter. The Five &Below coupon is good for this week. You just have to mention Steuart Weller!
Congratulations to our Spelling Bee participants and winner! We would like to thank Mrs. Bowlds for returning and being one of our judges!
We want to thank all of you for getting your children to school on time, every day. We know it is an early start, but when students miss even 10 minutes, they are missing out on school activities, classroom routines, time to review and the preview of the day ahead.
If you receive an attendance letter from me, it is to make sure you are aware of the number of absences or tardies your child has. Once a student accumulates 10 absences, we are required to have an attendance meeting in person at school.
The week of December 16 includes a lot of fun dress up days for students and staff. Check out the flyer!
Respectfully yours,
Julia Burton, Principal
Fourth and Fifth Grade Spelling Bee Contestants
And the Fifth Grade Winner Is...
Congratulations Zayan for being the fifth grade winner who will represent Steuart Weller for the upcoming 2025 LCPS Spelling Bee.
Attendance is Important:
As we begin the second quarter, we are reminding parents and guardians that regular, on-time school attendance is the key to student success. This school year, we continue to seek to partner with families to ensure that students attend school every day, on time. By making school attendance a priority, you can help your student succeed and develop good habits that last a lifetime. Below are some ways that parents/guardians can help.
Scheduling: We ask that parents/guardians not take their student out of school unnecessarily. Please schedule vacations or appointments during student holidays. See the student calendars on the LCPS website to know when your student will not be in school. For added convenience, calendars for this school year and for the next school year are posted. Please also remember that absences due to family trips or vacations are considered unexcused unless they are due to family emergencies or observation of religious holidays.
Attend Every Day: We understand that there are occasions when a student is not feeling well enough to attend school. If you have questions about when a student should go to school, we invite you to see our guide on when to keep students home or consult your healthcare provider for additional guidance. Remember that when a student is absent, parents/guardians are responsible for notifying the student’s school and providing the reason for the absence. In some circumstances, parents/guardians may be asked to provide documentation from a healthcare provider.
Social-Emotional Health: If your student has anxiety about attending school, your school’s mental health team can help support you and your student. School staff will work with your student to provide support and keep them connected to their school community.
Monitor Attendance: Monitor your student's attendance in ParentVue. If a student misses just two days each month, by the end of the school year, they may be considered chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism has been shown to negatively impact student grades and assessment scores, plus contribute to anxiety about lost class time.
We want to make sure that our students do not miss out on the exciting and engaging learning opportunities we have planned. If, at any time, you have questions or concerns regarding attendance or any other issue, please contact me or a member of my team. Additional attendance resources can be found on the LCPS website. We look forward to partnering with you to help our students succeed.
Holiday Dress Up:
Don't Miss Out on the PTO Winter ASAP:
Registration for our Winter ASAP (after school activities) has launched. Registration closes December 31, 2024.
Classes begin January 6, 2025 and end on March 14, 2025.
*Classes will be made up for holidays and elections.
**Classes will NOT be made up for inclement weather/snow cancellations.
A Gift of Giving:
Weller is seeking donations of gift cards to support families with essential needs during the holiday season.
Please consider donating a $50 Target or Walmart Gift card.
Watchdog Parents:
We are officially launching our "Watchdog Parents" program for 2024-2025. What is this wonderful program you ask? This is an opportunity for parents to become role models for our students. You will have the opportunity to work with classes, students, and your children's classroom throughout the day. You pick the full day or half day to commit your time working with the Wild Cats. Click here to find out more.
It is important that you provide admin two (2) weeks notice so that they can plan for your visit. All requests to be a Watchdog Parent will be confirmed by admin via email.
Watchdog Parent Experiences:
Thank you Mrs. Nguyen for volunteering as a "Watchdog Parent".
Stella and Larkin Davidson are excited their father visited Weller as a "Watchdog Parent".
