Class of 2025 Families: Updated information in the senior section below.
California Healthy Kids STUDENT Survey: On March 19th, CHS will be taking part in the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), a health and well-being survey for students in grades 9-12, administered in partnership with the California Department of Education. The aim of the survey is to compile data about the student population to best understand the make-up and experience of the student body, evaluate programs that address student needs, and shape needed services. The survey is designed to gather trend data on key areas of health and behavioral risks, including alcohol, tobacco and drugs, and gain an understanding of individual student perceptions of their health & wellbeing, school safety and the learning environment.
For further information, you are also encouraged to visit the California Healthy Kids Survey website at http://chks.wested.org/ and https://calschls.org/about/the-surveys/#chks to review the survey and see the frequently asked questions. A sample 2023-2024 high school survey can be viewed at https://calschls.org/administration/downloads/
Students will participate in the survey unless a parent chooses to opt their child out.
- If you would like to opt your child out or have questions, please email CHS counseling office at afsaneh.doctorsafaie@coronadousd.net" . The survey will be administered on March 19th during homeroom.
California Healthy Kids Survey for Parents/Guardians- Estimated Survey Time: 10-15 minutes
California School Parent Survey, 2024-2025
CUSD is asking that you complete the California Healthy Kids Parent Survey to learn more about your opinions regarding school culture and climate. This survey is an opportunity to communicate your perceptions about your child’s school. This letter explains the survey and, at the bottom of the page, provides your URL and access instructions. If you have any questions about this survey please contact the school counselor.
- The purpose of this survey is to obtain parent perceptions about the school.
Your participation is voluntary. It is also very important. The information you provide will help guide the district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, and improve student achievement.
- This is an anonymous survey. It is designed so that no one can be identified from the data. You do not have to respond to any questions that you feel could be used to identify you. Simply skip any such questions.
- All questions apply to the school you selected.
- The results are for the use of your district. The California Department of Education and WestEd will preserve data confidentiality and refer any data requests to the district.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCESSING THE SURVEY
If you have more than one child at this school, you will only need to complete one survey for this school. Please fill out just one survey about the school using your oldest child as a reference.
After the first page of the survey, you will be able to change the language to one of 18 options.
- Access your school site survey by using the following link: CHS CHKS Parent Survey Link

Athletics: Spring sports are in full swing - come on out and support our Islanders!!
Coronado Athletics Website: https://www.islandersportsfoundation.net
Athletic Director Aaron.Brooks@coronadousd.netIslander Families,
We need your partnership and support in ensuring that our students arrive at school on time each day. We continue to see a significant increase in tardies, impacting both individual student success and the overall learning environment.
When students arrive late, they miss valuable instructional time which can affect understanding of key concepts and, ultimately, their grades. Additionally, frequent tardies disrupt the learning process for their peers and teachers. Respecting the school schedule is an important habit that fosters responsibility, discipline, and academic success.
During the coming weeks, we will be implementing new interventions to address chronic tardiness and support students in developing better time management habits. These interventions may include increased monitoring, tardy sweeps, additional parent notifications, and targeted support for students who are frequently late. Detailed interventions will be communicated via email this week. Our goal is to create a learning environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed without unnecessary disruptions.
We ask for your support in reinforcing the importance of punctuality. Please help ensure that your student is arriving at school on time and ready to learn. If there are any challenges preventing timely arrival, we encourage you to reach out so we can work together on solutions.
Thank you for your continued partnership in making Coronado High School a place where every student can thrive.
Respectfully,
CHS Administration

CAASPP Testing
JUNIORS! It's almost time for CAASPP Testing! Mark your calendars for testing dates
Important reminder: statewide testing of students in grade 11 will begin after spring break. Many parents question whether or not their children should participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) testing. Here’s why it matters:
Federal law requires all districts to meet a 95% participation rate.
If that threshold is not met, the academic indicator for the school will be negatively impacted.
The higher the academic indicator of your child’s school, the more desirable you are to a college admittance office.
High school students who wish to earn a State Seal of Biliteracy on their diploma are required to earn a score of 3 or higher on the CAASPP in English/Language Arts
High school students who wish to earn a Golden State Seal of Merit on their diploma are required to earn a score of 3 or higher on the CAASPP ELA, Math, and CA Science tests.
Save money and time in college - the CSU uses your scores for college placement and to test out of certain English and Math courses in college..
Teachers and administrators can use test results to tailor instruction in areas of need.
- Results of the CAASPP testing are made public in the Fall, and we look forward to sharing with the community how well our students are performing on our state standards.
If you have any questions, please contact Tim Kusserow at Timothy.Kusserow@coronadousd.net

New! Coronado High School’s 2024-2025 School Profile
Coronado High School’s counseling department develops and publishes the school profile every fall on the CHS website and shares it with colleges during the college admissions process. The counselors reviewed it at college night this March and with the PTO.
What is a high school profile? High school profiles are a tool created by high school counselors for college admissions officers, school communities and other families potentially moving to the school. Colleges want to evaluate students in the context of the high school they attend, and this is why high school profiles exist. It provides information about the school’s requirements, grading policies, course offerings, colleges attended by graduates, and other important data.

Independent Study Contract: California has changed the Independent Study Contract requirements for 2024-25. Currently, students who have a planned absence of 1 (or more) consecutive days of school may complete an Independent Study Contract with the prior approval of a CHS administrator. When successfully completed, an ISC enables students to remain on track with their learning in the classroom. It also allows the District to recoup the loss of funding caused by the absence. In order to be approved, please submit an ISC request to the front office at least three school days before the absence begins to allow teachers an opportunity to organize the work for students. For more information, please contact Noila Perri (noila.perri@coronadousd.net) in the main office.
Students Leaving Early: Please remember to contact the office, in advance, via note or phone call if your student will be leaving campus early. Students MUST be checked out through the office and are required to have a pass to be released from their classroom.
Absences: To verify an absence, please contact Doris Ricks in the attendance office at 619-522-8907 EX. 2094. Or, complete and submit the CHS Parent Verification of Attendance Form (Google) or complete this PDF form and email to: chsattendance@coronadousd.net
