Thoughts from Dr. Cohen
On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson stepped onto Ebbets Field for his first game with the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was the beginning of an unparalleled career in baseball. At the end of his explosive nine years as a Dodger, his record included a .311 batting average, 137 home runs, 734 runs batted in, and 197 stolen bases. In 1955, he helped the Dodgers beat the New York Yankees to win their first World Series Championship. Robinson took home the Rookie of the Year Award in 1947, the Most Valuable Player Award in 1949, and in 1962 became the first African American inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
After integrating baseball, Robinson became a full-fledged leader in the Civil Rights movement. He used his celebrity status to further human rights and endeavored to change the landscape of race relations in the United States. Each year, on April 15, every major league player wears the only number to be retired by all of Major League Baseball: 42.
I love letting our students know that the impossible is always possible. Re-imagining their future, controlling their narrative and pushing their own limits is something education helps foster. It took Jackie Robinson some grit and resilience to break the color barrier. On a smaller scale, I watched our students demonstrate patience, stamina and tenacity on their CMAS tests. After all, you don’t get to be Jackie Robinson without approaching each challenge in life as if it’s a test of character; I saw that in kids as young as 8!
8th Grade Continuation:
We’d like to start a new tradition at Harmony Ridge! In my previous schools, our 7th grade parents would help lead the 8th grade continuation committee. That way, our 8th grade parents can be fully present at their students’ continuation ceremony. This way of paying it forward helps build camaraderie among families. 8th grade families eventually would take on the end of year formal dance. We’re building a great school and our traditions will help!

Sky Zone - Money and permission slips due by 9:00 am
Money and permission slips need to be turned in by 9:00 am Monday. We will not be able accept money after that time. If you would like to purchase additional sessions, they are $5.00 each and need to be turned in to Mrs. Banaitis by 9:00 am as well. Once everything is received, I will send you a link to fill out the waiver ahead of time. This will speed up check-in. Also, plan to arrive at least a 1/2 hour early to check in, that way you can utilize all of the jumping time. Any questions please let Mrs. Banaitis know tomorrow. There can't be any exceptions to this as Mrs. Banaitis will be out of the country starting Tuesday April 23rd.
