Principal Message
Shoultes families,
Where is this year going?? December? I seriously can't believe it.
Well, here is what is going on at Shoultes. First, beginning on Monday the 28th we started brand new building schedule. We decided to build this new schedule to facilitate having the opportunity for our grade levels to teach in "blocks". This means for example, all third grade teachers will be teaching math at the same time, the same with other subjects as well. This new schedule will also allow us to be more strategic about how we provide support and intervention for our students who need it through our Learning Assistance Program, Special Education as well as more support for our Multilingual Learners. I am very excited by this change and the support it will provide for students. For students this will mean that there will be some changes to when certain subjects are taught but for families there will be no outward changes, arrival and dismissal are not changing.
Second, last month we held our first community breakfast in what we affectionately call the "Parent Hub" in portable 27. Portable 27 is the portable on the north end of campus nearest to the parking lot. This space has been outfitted as a community room for families who want to come to school and volunteer but not necessarily be right in the classroom. Many parents have younger children and this allows them to be on campus without having to bring these future sharks right into the classroom. We have computers and all the tools necessary to facilitate volunteering here at Shoultes. Teachers can drop off projects they would like to have help with. Maybe this is a project that needs items cut out or glued, whatever it is, this space is designed to make this easier for our families.
As mentioned, this is also where we have our community breakfasts. These events allow me to share information and answer the questions that parents have. It also allows me to bring in other resources from the community to help families. I love to cook and at our last breakfast we made pancakes, sausage and bacon. We had a great turnout but it was a little small. I am putting the next breakfast out for the entire community. I am hoping you will join us. Nothing helps people feel more connected than taking some time to enjoy some food in a less formal setting.

WATCH D.O.G.S. ® (Dads Of Great Students) is a family and community engagement educational initiative. There are 2 primary goals of the WATCH D.O.G.S. ® program.
1) To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
2) To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.
WATCH D.O.G.S.® began in 1998 in a single school in Springdale, Arkansas and has since grown into a nationally recognized program that has brought hundreds of thousands of fathers and father figures into the school classrooms and hallways across the country, creating millions of hours of “in school” volunteer time and having a tremendously positive impact on the educational process.
Who are Watch DOGS (Dads Of Great Students)?
Watch DOGS are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures who volunteer for at least one day each year at an official WATCH D.O.G.S. ® school. During the day, WatchDOGS may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, watch the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. Many school principals have reported that the mere presence of a WatchDOG dramatically reduces reports of bullying. On the day of their participation, WatchDOGS are given a brief review of their involvement and they wear an official WATCH D.O.G.S. ® t-shirt with a disposable ‘Dog Tag’ identifying them as WatchDOGS.
