Message from Principal Collins
Greetings Evergreen Families,
We are well into our second semester. We are busy with learning and activities every day here at Evergreen Middle School. Students are settled in routines and understand our school- wide expectations. Teachers have worked hard to create meaningful learning opportunities and teach school-wide behavior expectations. Consistency and predictability are key factors for student success, as well as a calm learning environment to better focus on learning.
Our focus remains to cultivate a positive climate and create the best learning environment possible. High quality instruction and student learning is our highest priorities. Everything that we do at Evergreen is designed to help students learn in all areas and be successful well beyond their time in middle school. Once again, that partnership between school and home is a key ingredient for student success. With that said, we hope that your scholars are feeling safe and supported. This is an interesting time in their lives and development, and can be challenging at times. If you have questions and or concerns, I want to hear from you.
Our teachers are working very hard to have our students ready for the next level. Just a gentle reminder that we need all students to be in attendance at school unless they are ill. We have many students that are coming to school late and checking out early. When students are absent from school, they miss out on consistent instruction, tend to make lower scores on standardized tests, and develop negative social and emotional development. So please help us by making sure your child is at school and on time. We want each one of them to be successful learners.
Use of social media. As all school districts, we deal with student social media and the effects it has on our students. We work to keep our scholars updated and knowledgeable on how to use social media in a proper fashion. I will give our students credit for the fact in the past couple of years the amount of time we have had to do deal with social media issues has dropped drastically. We still get to see what other districts go through with student and parent use of social media and it can really cause major problems for everyone involved. I always encourage parents to make sure you are monitoring your children’s social media platforms. Be aware of what apps they are using and do not be afraid to occasionally do some routine checks of their phone. Besides checking your child’s phone and social media, please make sure you are talking with your children about their lives and how they are doing. Social media is something that we all have to manage in our own lives unfortunately it is not always used in the correct form with teenagers.
Student Led Conferences are coming at the end of March. You will start getting information for scheduling conferences soon from your scholar’s advisory teacher. The month leading up to Student-Led Conferences is a busy one for students and staff from a preparation standpoint. Students prepare for their conferences by highlighting their first semester grades and their current grades for the third quarter. Students also explain how they earned their grades. They show work samples students have gathered from their classes throughout the year. Additional pieces include looking at their attendance and behavior for the school year and setting goals. The bulk of the work takes place in January and February. The amount of work that goes into the conferences on both the student and staff end is overwhelming at times. The culminating conferences at the end though are one of the best things I’ve seen in education. Scholars feel extremely proud of the work they’ve put into the conference and the parents enjoy seeing their child take responsibility for their own learning. We look forward to seeing parents at Student-Led Conferences in March.

Los Carnavales
The past two weeks, our 6th grade scholars explored Spanish-speaking countries' history, culture, and traditions through Los Carnavales. They created Carnival masks and presented about it. This activity supports our focus on exploring different cultures.

How to Prevent Cognitive Overload
Take a look at the image below. Can you understand what the text is saying? If I gave you a test on it, would you pass?
Unless you are an expert in "convolutional neural networks", you probably can’t make heads or tails of this text, even though you can read the words. If you heard this in a classroom, you would probably end up confused or overwhelmed. Many students experience this sensation – what we could call “cognitive overload” – everyday in each of their lessons, and it partly explains some students’ lack of motivation for school. The material is simply way above their heads.
There are at least three ways to address this problem, as a teacher:
1. Pre-teaching. Before diving into a new unit of study, the teacher can pre-teach the pre-requisite skills that students need to have to be able to succeed in subsequent lessons.
2. Segmenting. The teacher can break down a complex topic, like the one above, and introduce it in bite-size pieces, so that students are given ample time to practice and rehearse each individual piece.
3. Small group instruction. In some cases, no matter how much the teacher pre-teaches or segments their instruction, a few students will be too far behind to be able to keep up with the pace of instruction. The solution is to invite them to work with the teacher in a small group so that they can get instruction that addresses their needs.
When teachers make these adjustments in their instruction, all students, not just the fastest or the most persistent, can learn complex material.

Getting to STEM Exploration Night – Transportation Options
STEM Exploration Night, From Imagination to Innovation, is coming up soon on Thursday, March 14, from 6-8 p.m. at Federal Way High School. FWPS is committed to ensuring transportation is not a barrier to attend. Below, you will find a list of transportation options to get to the event, including our free bus shuttle:
Drive and Park
Families who drive to Federal Way High School can find parking in the school parking lot, accessible from 14th Ave off S 308th St, or 16th Ave off S 304th St. There will be directional signage and volunteers on-site to direct traffic.
Take a Bus Shuttle
FWPS offers free bus shuttles to the event for the entire family! Shuttles are conveniently located at school sites across the district. All students can ride the shuttle bus with a parent or guardian, and high school students can ride the shuttle by themselves with a signed permission slip.
Note, the first run serves scholars and their families who are participating in booths and need to arrive early.
Take Public Transportation
Families who wish to take public transportation can plan their trip using the King County Metro Transit Trip Planner.
