Geography Field Trip
The year 9 geography students at Lister Community School embarked on an exciting field trip to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. To make the journey even more memorable, they opted for an Uber Boat ride along the River Thames.
The morning began with a buzz of excitement as students boarded the boat at a designated pier. As they cruised down the river, they were treated to stunning views of London's iconic landmarks, including the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, and Tower Bridge. The journey itself became a geography lesson as students observed the river's role in the city's history and development.
Upon arriving at Greenwich Pier, the students disembarked and made their way to the National Maritime Museum. There, they were greeted by knowledgeable guides who led them through a series of interactive exhibits. They explored the museum's vast collection of historical artefacts, ranging from ancient ship models to modern maritime technology. Students learned about the principles of navigation, the science of shipbuilding, and the impact of seafaring on global trade and exploration.
One highlight of the trip was the opportunity to step aboard a historic ship, the Cutty Sark. Students marvelled at the ship's intricate details and imagined the lives of the sailors who once sailed her across the oceans. They also participated in hands-on activities, such as tying nautical knots and using traditional navigation instruments.
The field trip concluded with a group discussion on the importance of the maritime industry and its influence on human history. Students reflected on the knowledge they gained and the connections they made between the museum exhibits and their classroom studies.
The Uber Boat ride and the visit to the National Maritime Museum provided the students with a unique and engaging learning experience. It allowed them to step outside the classroom and explore the world of geography first-hand. The field trip not only deepened their understanding of maritime history and geography but also sparked their curiosity and inspired them to learn more about the vast and fascinating world of the sea.
Scholastic Book Fair
The Lister Community School library transformed into a magical realm of stories and imagination when the annual Scholastic Book Fair rolled into town. The library was awash with vibrant colours, captivating book covers, and the excited chatter of students eager to explore the vast array of reading materials.
Tables were laden with an assortment of books, catering to every reading taste and age group. From thrilling adventures and captivating mysteries to informative non-fiction and heart-warming tales, there was something for everyone. Students could browse through the shelves, picking up books that piqued their curiosity, or seek recommendations from the knowledgeable librarians.
The atmosphere was electric as students eagerly selected their favourite books, their eyes sparkling with anticipation. The students were also able to buy stationary and other reading accoutrements and we at the Lister news desk were very happy to hear that the library also made enough money to reinvest in buying new stock for the library.
Into University Buddy Programme
This week, our Year 8 students have been participating in the exciting Into University Buddy Programme. Yesterday, they attended a workshop that delved into the world of higher education. The session covered topics such as university life, financial considerations, and the wide range of courses available.
Exposing students to the possibilities of higher education early on is crucial. It helps them to develop aspirations, set goals, and make informed decisions about their future.
On Friday, the students will embark on a visit to the prestigious Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to visit such a renowned institution. This unique experience will allow our students to gain valuable insights into campus life and academic environments.
We believe that this programme will inspire our young learners, broadening their horizons and encouraging them to aspire to higher education.
Top Praise Earners
Dear Parents and Carers,
In last year's version of the parent mail, every week we published a league table of the top praise earners from each house. This was a celebration of the most successful house teams at Lister. Now that we have moved on to the year team system, we could not publish the same news. Here we have now reformatted the old system - highlighting year groups' success and the particular form groups and individuals in year groups who are earning the most praises. Keep an eye out for your child's name here and see whether their form group have had particular success through the week!
