SENIORS' LAST DAY !
PEARSON CONSTRUCTION APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITY
I'm reaching out to you to ask for help in identifying hard-working high school seniors who will be graduating shortly and may be interested in this opportunity. We are looking for students who are willing to learn and work hard.
I wanted to pass along that at Pearson Construction https://pearsonconstruction.com/ we have an excellent apprenticeship program that provides paid on-the-job training and classroom instruction to become a skilled tradesperson such as a carpenter, mason, steel erector, concrete finisher or general trades.
As you know, jobs in the skilled trades are in high demand with great pay and benefits. An apprenticeship allows students to "earn while they learn" and get paid as they receive invaluable hands-on experience working alongside experienced journeymen. Students will get trained in all aspects of their chosen trade with no need to go into debt for a college education.
For the right candidate, apprenticeships can launch a lucrative long-term career in the skilled trades with vast job prospects. If you have any questions or students to recommend, please forward this email to them or call me directly at (269) 926-7281 to discuss next steps.
Thank you for your assistance in growing the skilled trades in Berrien County.
Best regards,
Thad

WHAT'S UP IN ANATOMY?
This week in Anatomy, our students have been exploring science skills through a variety of daily lab activities. They have been learning how to manipulate variables and analyze data with the goal of creating a lab poster by the end of the week.
WHAT'S UP IN BIOLOGY?
In Biology, students are concluding the Ecology Unit with their Human Impact projects. They were tasked with researching an endangered species, designing a proposal to protect it, and running computer simulation models to test the effectiveness of their ideas. While facing challenges with the simulations, students demonstrated great perseverance and created impressive final posters to present their work.

Greetings,
My name is Reed Rosado, I serve as a District Representative for Representative Bill Huizenga (MI-04) and as our liaison to the Congressional App Challenge. On behalf of Congressman Bill Huizenga, I am excited to announce the start of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge for Michigan’s Fourth Congressional District!
Officially launched by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2015, this competition is a nationwide event intended to engage creativity and encourage student participation in STEM fields. The competition allows students to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application (also known as an “app”) for desktop/PC, web, tablet, mobile, raspberry Pi or other devices. The Challenge accepts any programming language, such as C, C++, Java, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, or "block code."
Students may compete as individuals or in teams of up to four, as long as at least two of the teammates reside in Michigan’s Fourth Congressional District. The application portal is currently open, and students are encouraged to submit their app no later than November 1st.
The winner from the Fourth Congressional District, chosen by a panel of expert judges, will be featured on CongressionalAppChallenge.us. The winning app is also eligible to be on display in the U.S. Capitol, honoring the winners across the country.
Last year, Congressman Huizenga was pleased to recognize students from Kalamazoo Christian High School for winning the 2023 Congressional App Challenge for their creation “WildLife GO.” Their app can be viewed here.
Further details and rules for the 2024 Congressional App Challenge and more information can be found here.
This is a great way for students to further the development of their creative ability. I hope you will encourage students to participate!
If you have any questions, please contact me at Reed.Rosado@mail.house.gov or by phone at (269) 569-8595.

PRESS BOX PLAYER OF THE WEEK--ANYA SEXTON!
Press Box Player of the Week Anya Sexton
This week’s Press Box Player of the Week is Anya Sexton.
Anya just won her third consecutive regional discus title with a 128-foot throw, setting a new personal
record and winning the event at Bangor by nine feet. She’s the in the top three of all Division 3 discus
throwers in the state, and has a good chance to medal at the state meet on June 1 in Kent City.
She said she’s had to relearn or change her footwork many times since she’s been throwing. “Every year
I threw I changed something in my throwing footwork/routine to get better.” Her goal is to reach 130
feet before her senior season is over, a huge throw but still some distance from Andrea Hiler’s 2010
WHS record of 143 feet. Despite her success with the discus her favorite event is shot put due to the
more explosive and violent motion, where discus is more of a graceful glide motion.
Asked about her coaches at Watervliet, she said “I was doubting this season because we didn’t have a
coach and I was struggling with footwork. I didn’t think it was going to be a good season, but when I met Coach Vic [Fellner], I knew it was going to be a great season. He’s my favorite coach because he puts in so much time and effort to make us better.”
Her best memory of her Watervliet sports career, so far, was when she threw 126 feet at the 2024
Watervliet relays. “It was a really big jump from my last PR. Aleah, my twin sister, was very proud and shocked. After graduation “I would love to go to college for track and field, but my plans are to go to Lake Michigan College for their welding program. I want to be a role model for my baby sister Remington and help her improve her throwing career. Who knows, maybe she can beat the school record!”
Congratulations, Anya!

My mom is an occupational therapist at corewell health hospital in St.Joe and my dad is a maintenance worker at the same hospital which help me throughout highschool. My sister Ella goes to college at Lake Michigan College and my other sister is going to GVSU.
2. Since I don't have one favorite class I will talk about my two favorite classes. One of my favorite class is history with Mr. Andrews. I like this class because history has always been one of my favorite classes forever and I really just enjoy learning about the history of the United States and all around the world. My other favorite class is Biology with Mrs.O'Toole. I like this class because it is always easy for me to understand topics like Ecology and Evolution.
3. My Favorite teacher is Mr. Andrews. He is my favorite teacher because during History he is very straight forward with the lessons and doesn't get sidetracked, which I really appreciate because it allows me to better understand the topics and get things done. He is also very nice to each and everyone of the students in my class, which creates a great and relaxed atmosphere in the class.
4. At Watervliet I participate in varsity soccer, but have recently branched out to the St.Joe Kickers club and do an outdoor team as well as indoor there.
5. Something I like to do in my free time is spend time with my family whether that be just at my house watching a movie with them or going on a walk with them. Another thing I like to do in my free time is go swimming at forest beach during the summer. I also really like to go and practice soccer with my friends at the highschool field.
6. After highschool I am planning on finishing out my 5th year for the EMC and getting my associates. After that I plan to move on to a 4 year college like Ferris or GVSU. After that I plan to either work as a Financial Advisor or a Teacher.
7. I am proud to be a panther because I am able to follow in my grandpa's footprints as a Watervliet Panther.
CONGRATULATIONS MAY 2024 SOPHOMORE STUDENT OF THE MONTH --JULIAN CARDOSO!
Hello, my name is Julian Cardoso. I am currently attending Watervliet High School, the Math & Science Center, and participating in dual enrollment. I reside with my mother and my three brothers—two younger and one older. One of my older brother is currently in university grinding it out. My mother is an incredible person who does everything she can for my siblings and me. My family is always supporting each other through any difficulties. My mother’s dedication and care inspire me to strive for excellence in everything I do.
At my high school, my favorite class is U.S. History. I appreciate this class because there is always something different and engaging to do every day. My favorite project in this class was creating a magazine, and I was very pleased with how it turned out due to the effort I invested. Furthermore at the Math & Science Center, my favorite class is Analytical Chemistry because of the enjoyable and interesting labs we conduct each week. These hands-on experiments make learning both enjoyable and memorable.
My favorite teacher is Mrs. Uhm, who teaches AH Pre-Calculus at the Math & Science Center. She distinguishes herself by not merely teaching us formulas but also explaining the deeper meaning and reasoning behind their use. Her teaching style has greatly enhanced my understanding and appreciation of mathematics.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my mother and ensuring that I complete all my schoolwork promptly—discipline and consistency are key for me. I also love to draw and sketch out ideas for future passion projects. Additionally, I dedicate a significant amount of time to researching topics that interest me, keeping myself informed and inspired.
After high school, I plan to attend university and subsequently graduate school to earn a PhD. I am considering double majoring in Physics and Applied Mathematics to broaden my knowledge and skills. Alongside my studies, I aim to have multiple side ventures and ultimately make a positive impact on the world, especially when it involves advancing our modern tech to the next level.
I am proud to be a WHS Panther because our school offers a ton of opportunities most of other schools don’t offer. We have access to LMC classes, dual enrollment, AP courses (even online), various online courses, and options to test out of courses. Always ask questions if the school offers something, because you never know what you could find out. Additionally, there is a wide variety of sports to participate in if a student would like. These opportunities allow us to tailor our education to our interests and goals, making it a great environment for academic and personal growth for every student in the building. All you need is the effort to make it happen.
CONGRATULATIONS MAY 2024 JUNIOR STUDENT OF THE MONTH --DANIEL MANDUJANO!
I live with my two parents, Alicia and Juan, and have an older sister, Brici, who has two little ones, and an older brother, Juan. My favorite class is Algebra 2 because I've felt like I've been naturally good at math, and it's a class that I do find enjoyment in. With that my favorite teacher is Mrs. Sibley. I've had her since my sophomore year, and she always does a great job at making sure you understand the current lesson; never letting outside things affect the way she teaches. I'm currently in my junior track season and in the fall I run cross country. In my free time, I like to just lie in my bed and watch YouTube or play video games. After high school I plan to go to a 4 year university to pursue a career in the medical field. I am proud to be a WHS Panther. I've been going to Watervliet ever since Young 5s and have always felt that I've been given big opportunities to set me up for my future after high school by being able to take college courses and a good variety of APs, which have helped set me up for a transition to college.
CONGRATULATIONS MAY 2024 JUNIOR STUDENT OF THE MONTH --JUDITH AGUILERA-GALLEGOS!
I have two supporting parents and 2 sisters. My favorite class is Anatomy because we learn many different things there and it's taught by one of my favorite teachers which is Mrs.O'toole, her class always makes me feel very welcomed and I know I can ask her anything if I ever need help with something. During my free time I like to go outside, walk around, and listen to music. After high school I plan on going to college and entering a Law Enforcement Academy. I am proud to be a WHS panther because there are so many great teachers and students here.

24-25 CLUBS/STUDENT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
ANNOUNCEMENT READERS:
Each year, 5 Senior announcement readers are selected for the school year to read daily announcements on the PA. This is by Principal invite only. Seniors who have interest can reach out to Ms. Powers. Senior announcement readers have already been selected for the 24-25 school year.
DEBATE TEAM:
Debate is a competitive team that participates in the West Michigan Debate League and the Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association. We combine critical thinking with building confidence in oral communication. There are many different formats of debating; we participate in Congressional Debate in which we participate as members of Congress who write bills to enact into law, write speeches to defend the passing of the bills, and answer questions by fellow Congressmen. The Debate Team begins in September and ends with state competition in December. Research has indicated that students participating in Debate consistently score higher on SAT and ACT tests than those who don't and provides a perfect platform for demonstrating a well-rounded student that appeals to college admissions. See Mrs. Simmons with interest.
ESPORTS TEAM:
Esports is an online gaming club. We are members of the Southwestern Michigan Esports League, which is run by Berrien Resa. The participants can decide if they would like to play Valorant or Rocket League. Which game we choose to play will depend on the number of members and what game they prefer to play. We meet twice a week, one day to practice and one day to play other schools. We treat this as a sport, so students participating must be academically and behaviorally eligible. Yes, I do ask Mrs. Tyler for an eligibility report. See Mrs. Overacker at the MS for more information.
FRESHMEN MENTORS:
Each year, the Principal invites current Sophomores and Juniors to serve as Freshmen mentors for the annual August Freshmen Orientation Day (the following year). Students are selected based on GPA and behavior. The Principal invites students to this team each May. If you have interest at the end of your 10th or 11th grade year, reach out to Ms. Powers. The event requires students to be trained and facilitate Freshmen Orientation on a day before the start of the school year. Mentors can serve as both Juniors and Seniors, consecutively. Ms. Powers is still in search of junior and senior mentors for the 24-25 school year.
INTERACT CLUB:
Interact is a service organization sponsored by the Paw Paw Lake Rotary Club. The team completes multiple service projects each year. Membership includes both middle school and high school students. Members are required to attend regular meetings and complete service projects outside of school. Club officers are 8th graders. Members consist of 7th -12th graders. See Ms. Powers if you are interested in joining the team.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY:
The National Honor Society gives special recognition to students who have distinguished themselves in the four areas of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The purpose of NHS is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to encourage the development of character. New members (students going to be JUNIORS and SENIORS for the following school year) are chosen each spring by a committee of five faculty members. The selection committee chooses new members based on the above mentioned areas.
Requirements for consideration for membership in WHS NHS are:
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 is required to apply for NHS
Minimum of 20 hours of community service is required. Ten hours may be affiliated with Watervliet Public Schools, with 10 hours being served in the community.
Letter from the organization to provide community service hours with is required for verification of hours. It must be on organization letterhead and from someone OUTSIDE of your family. It must state hours served and description of volunteer services. This letter must accompany your application.
All applications MUST be filled out COMPLETELY for consideration. If the application is not fully completed, your essay will not be read. Sections 1, 2, and 3 are required for a complete application.
Acceptable community service examples are: mentoring, church and youth groups, homeless shelter, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, serving food at American Legion, hospital volunteer, unpaid coaching or refereeing, bingo at a nursing home, etc. If you have questions regarding hours and types of community service, bring those questions to the NHS Adviser.
Must be involved in at least two school activities.
Membership is based on NHS four criteria of Academic Achievement, Character, Leadership and Service.
ANY violation of the Student Handbook or Athletic Code may prohibit you from being inducted into NHS.
See Mrs. Dawson or Mrs. O’Toole if you have any questions.
PBIS TEAM: On the last Monday of each month at 3:15 PM, a team of teachers, parents, and students meet to review and building upon the Tier 1 PBIS plan, PBIS is Positive behavior Interventions and Supports and refers to our expectations matrix, caught in the act tickets, student of the month program, and other initiatives associated with positive school culture and climate. Students at any grade level can serve. Reach out to Ms. Powers if you have interest. Ms. Powers is still in search of PBIS team members for the 24-25 school year.
ROBOTICS:
High School Robotics is a club that will meet periodically throughout the year until the season officially starts. The season starts at the beginning of the year and runs until mid April. Robotics involves planning, design, building, electronics, engineering, marketing, coding, and operating a robot that accomplishes specific tasks. There are 2 regional competitions and if you finish with enough points, you are invited to attend the state competition. You will work with power tools Attendance is mandatory and usually meets 2-4 times each week and several Saturdays to ensure the robot is ready for the start of the season. Marketing involves getting sponsorships and fundraising and promoting the team.
SAC (STUDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL TO THE PRINCIPAL):
This is an advisory council that meets with Ms. Powers every other week on Wednesdays at 7:30 AM. Volunteers are taken each year in May for the following school year. If more than 4 students at any grade level volunteer, the students in that class vote for their 4 representatives. Sixteen total students make up the team annually. Meetings are used to review school policies and practices. The team makes suggestions and puts plans in place to improve any and all aspects of high school life. Students can serve on the team for more than one year if interested/elected. All of the student leadership positions for the 24-25 school year have been filled.
SCIENCE OLYMPIAD:
Students have the opportunity to explore topics that often they would not experience in their normal school day. For some activities, the experience is very “hands-on”, as students create designs, solve problems and learn the importance of teamwork. Science Olympiad activities culminate in a tournament, which adds the excitement of competition. In each of the High School divisions, there are 23 separate events in which a student may participate. A tournament is like a track meet, so an individual student should expect to compete in several different events. Those events range from anatomy to astrophysics to aeronautics. See Dr. Mosher if you are interested.
STUDENT COUNCIL:
The Watervliet High School Student Council is the elected student government that is the main voice of the student body recognized by the faculty and administration. They coordinate all student activities. Committees are formed to facilitate Homecoming, Winterfest, Red Ribbon and Teacher Appreciation Weeks, and other activities for which this student group has responsibility. The Student Council is responsible for promoting school spirit through Spirit Weeks. Students must show exemplary citizenship, possess a good work ethic, have a willingness to work well with others, and participate in all activities including the annual fundraiser. See Mrs. Richcreek or Mrs. Tyler with questions.
STUDENT OF THE MONTH BREAKFAST KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:
Each month, Ms. Powers seeks out a Senior student who is able and willing to speak at the monthly Student of the Month Breakfast to parents and students. Students write a speech about themselves, their activities and involvements, speak at the event and provide advice and leadership to younger Panthers. If you have interest in speaking, please reach out to Ms. Powers.

Steps for parents to create a parent Canvas account.
Obtain Student Pairing Code
Sign up for an account through your phone app or on the computer using an email address.
Parents should go to www.watervlietps.org and click on the link "Canvas for Parents" in the middle of the homepage. Here is the direct link: https://www.
canvas-resources. Here you will find the screenshot instructions, a 7 slide presentation and brief videos on navigating the parent portal, checking grades, viewing assignments and accessing teacher feedback.
Students need to create the pairing code for their parents and it is only valid for 7 days.
If you are having difficulty obtaining the student pairing code, teachers have access to this information within their course by going to People and clicking on the 3 dots in the upper right corner and choosing Export Pairing Codes. Again, these pairing codes are only good for 7 days. Quick way for teachers get this code to a parent when communicating with them.
Instructions are online AND shared every Friday in the high school parent newsletter.
Please reach out to us in the high school office if you have questions or concerns about accessing your child's Canvas account. We need and want your support at the high school!
