Empowering Moments
From Superintendent Smith...
Interacting with our Falcon Zone students definitely fills my bucket each and every week. I am still a classroom teacher at heart; yes, that's me, in my trusty lab coat above that I used to wear when I taught Chemistry at Falcon High. I really enjoy all of these opportunities to celebrate and share information with students that will be helpful in their future. It also reminds me just how hard all of our teachers and school staff members work in our schools! Falcon Zone teachers and staff give everything they have each and every day to make positive impacts on our students.
This past week, I had a blast with our new 6th graders at Falcon Middle as we helped determine various learning styles. Falcon Middle School Principal Elena Forehand and I presented "True Colors" to our 6th grade Firebirds. True Colors is a personality traits inventory that helps students know what kind of learner they are in the classroom. Students figure out if they are a Gold (organized/structured), Orange (spontaneous/energetic), Blue (emotional/empathetic), or Green (analytical/precise). Students learn that they have traits of each personality, how to utilize their strongest color to their advantage, and also how to enhance the traits of their lightest color as well. Students will add their "True Colors" results to their Learner Profile so that teachers know how to better work with the different personalities in their classrooms.
All of our secondary students in the Falcon Zone determine what their true colors are. They are also likely to be able to determine what the colors are for their family and close friends. So, parents, you will have to ask your secondary students about their True Colors! Thank you Firebird Nation for having me come and present to you. It was an awesome time getting to know you better!
Falcon Zone Staff Recognition
In the Falcon Zone we pride ourselves on having the most incredible staff! We want to give our community a chance to recognize those people that make a difference in our schools and for our students every day! Please let us know who is making a positive impact for your student. Let us know who has gone above and beyond to enhance your experience in our zone. Let us know who is doing an outstanding job!
Every staff member that is recognized will receive a note of recognition and a shoutout in our community newsletter. Staff members include not only teachers but secretaries, administrators, custodial & kitchen staff, paras, etc.
We want to know who is making a difference! Thank you for taking the time to fill out this quick form!

Stephanie Caceres, Nikki Eldard and Vanessa Apodaca are the first smiling faces you see when entering the office at FHS. These amazing secretaries can be seen wearing many hats and juggling many different tasks at a time, from managing fees, tracking attendance, fielding phone calls and supporting teachers and the admin team. They all shared that they love their Falcon Family and that the students are great and they "love THEIR kids." They are the face of the school and anyone that has had the opportunity to interact with them know what an awesome team they are!
We 💚 Our D49 Teachers
Thank you to everyone that took the time to recognize some of our amazing staff members. Below are the recognitions gathered from last week!
Jason Mascotti (WHES) - He goes above and beyond and will step in to work with challenging kids or help with kids he isn't even assigned to help. He has a great listening ear and always gives great advice.
Joanie Chapman (WHES) - She is an amazing Music Teacher! She is always upbeat and happy. I have noticed students who might not be participating will always open up and participate when they see how much fun other students are having.
Bethany Meyer (FHS) - She works hard everyday to prepare her students for upcoming events and tries her hardest to make everyone happy while doing so. Preparing choirs is hard work much less making them sound good, which she does. She wastes no time while also allowing her students to have fun and feel safe!
FMS Secretaries - These ladies work so hard and so well together to keep our building running smoothly. They always have a smile on their faces and are willing to help in any way they can. They are awesome and we can't thank them enough for all they do!
Shelly Duran (WHES) - Shelly is an amazing school nurse! Love seeing her smiley face and all her help that she gives us in our SSN Room. If we have a question/need she is there for us always!
Shawn Sturm (FHS) - He shows endless amounts of kindness to students as well as staff members. He demonstrates patience with every student in his classroom and is always engaged with them. We are lucky to have him as part of the FHS team.
Mrs. Stegman & Mrs. Bower (WHES) - This administrative duo goes above and beyond to create a school with a positive and caring environment for their staff, kids and families! I always feel welcomed, heard, and respected as a parent and know that my kids are in the best environment they could be.
Jessica Gregory (FMS) - Jessica goes above and beyond to make sure that all students and co-workers get the support needed. She invites students that are new and need help making friends to eat lunch with her. She supports her co-workers by making sure things are communicated in a timely manner. She created and maintains a beautiful landing page for our team.
Michelle Fothergill (WHES) - Mrs. Fothergill goes above and beyond to connect with her kids. She gets to know who they are and continues to be a guiding positive person for them well after Kindergarten.
Lori Bradford (MRES) - Lori stepped in as a long term sub for our fourth grade team. She is doing a phenomenal job, beginning the year by setting EFZ standards of vision, code, and SOPs with her students. She has amazing classroom management and has quickly become an active member of our team. THANK YOU!
Lisa Murdock (FMS) - She is a great listener and takes our concerns seriously. She listens to my son, values what he has to say and helps him problem solve. Thanks for all you do, Ms. Murdock!! We appreciate you!
Amy Duncan (BRES) - She knows what anyone needs before they even ask for it. She is so in tune with everyone in the building! Not just with the staff and volunteers but with the students too. She can probably tell you any student's name that you ask of her! Amy, you are AMAZING! BRES is so lucky to have you!
Free & Reduced Lunch
It is a common misconception that because breakfast & lunch are free this year, applying for the Free & Reduced program is not necessary, but as you can see in the diagram above, these applications mean so much more than a free meal. Additional funds will go directly to schools to help cover the cost of meals, support after-school activities and other nutritional programs for students. Plus, households who qualify may receive discounted school fees, class materials, bus passes, utilities support and more.
If you have not already done so, we strongly encourage you to complete a Free & Reduced application, even if you don't think you will qualify. Every application received has potential to help our school and in turn help our students.
