The Principal's Post
Dear Ridgeview Families:
Happy New Year! I hope each family had an enjoyable and relaxing Winter Break. At the start of each new year it is always a time to reflect and recalibrate. At Ridgeview, we are in the final days of the second nine weeks. The grading period ends on January 17th and then we will move full speed ahead into the second half of the school year. I invite each family to take the time to self-reflect with their scholars on their academic performance and behavior so far this school year. Then, as a family, recalibrate, by setting or re-establishing goals and identifying an achievable plan to obtain the goals. Taking the time to self-reflect and recalibrate will help each scholar to have a productive second semester.
With Joy!
Natalie M. James, Principal

Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Prince
Ms. Prince is the RMS school secretary and she's usually the face that students see when they enter the office to meet with office staff or have questions.
She grew up on the north side of the city and attended Duxberry ES, Dominion MS, Brookhaven and Walnut Ridge High Schools. In addition, Ms. Prince attended DeVry University. She has been working with children and school systems most of her life including: an infant care teacher, a preschool teacher, a respite care coordinator, a before and after care liaison, (Community School A+ Arts Academy), an Enrollment Specialist, an Office Manager, an EMIS Coordinator, a District Office Manager Supervisor, a Boys Basketball Assistant Coach, a Girls Basketball Coach, a School Concession Manager, and more.
Ms. Prince enjoys cooking, shopping, and volunteering in her community with Sigma Gamma Rho Philo (affiliate). In addition, she is an entrepreneur with a catering business. This is a good fit for her because she enjoys working with people face-to-face to find solutions and provide a service or product. When asked what is surreal to her? She responded, "Providing peace and helping others to find peace."
Her mantra is to love and live life without regrets. Without any L’s (i.e., lessons, let downs, losses, life, and love) there are no C’s (i.e., confidence, character, class, and couth).
As a seasoned chef she enjoys Mexican or Jamaican food or anything with robust flavor and a little kick! And, if there is a recipe she'll try it and sometimes she creates her own unique dishes.
She enjoys music from the 1980s and 90s and spending time with family, which is comprised of four daughters and one son. Although spending time with family is fun, Ms. Prince recognizes the importance of time alone to replenish. In fact, every so often she enjoys a respite weekend at a hotel, which energizes her and prepares her to be ready for the next opportunity to serve and help others.

RMS Scholars Experience Success in Academic Options
Spelling Bee
Last month at RMS, we were busily getting ready for the first round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee on December 12. Students were selected based on scores on a pre-test that was taken in the students English/Language Arts classes during October and early November. The RMS scholars of this round will participate in an online round with the winners advancing to the next competition and then, hopefully, we’ll have students qualify for the National competition in Washington, D.C.
Debate Competition
On December 20th, the Middle School District Debate competition was held at Capital University. The resolution for this year’s competition is "The United States should significantly reform or replace the Electoral College in the election of its President and Vice-President." Students are divided into teams of four with two arguing for the affirmative (in favor of the resolution) or the negative (against). More information on the next step in the process will be forthcoming at a later date.
Power of the Pen
At the end of the calendar year a writing competition for 7th and 8th graders was completed. The students were given a choice of three prompts and 40 minutes to write a creative story based on the prompt they had selected. RMS has done very well in this competition in the past, with 2 of our students making it to the state competition last year. This year XX RMS students qualified.
