Seeing so many people in person at our October 25th media academy was amazing! Please reach out if you can't attend but are interested in registering for the next three sessions. I hope to see many of you on Monday.

Dec. 5, 2022- Miriam Gilbert, Rosen Digital vice president, will expand teacher librarians' knowledge of the new, inquiry-based Core Concepts and Power Knowledge science and STEM databases. We will learn how the Learn360 database and other in-house media resources support science and STEM instruction. In addition, we will reflect on collection development and learn about Melissa Stewart's five kinds of nonfiction.

Jan. 31, 2023- Teacher librarians will increase their knowledge of PebbleGo and Gale databases and how they support research, literacy, and social studies instruction. We will deepen learning around the five kinds of nonfiction, reflect on computer science implementation with Aaron Maurer, MBAEA's computer science consultant, and identify connections to the EDVOLVE Digital Citizenship Framework.

Mar. 28, 2023- Jamie Gregory, a well-known educator in the field of media literacy, will provide teacher librarians with resources and best practices for instructional planning. In addition, time will be given to evaluate the EDVOLVE Digital Citizenship Framework, Media and Information Literacy strand.

Along with the sessions above, teacher librarians will assess the school library program, set a program goal, and determine action steps to improve the program based on district needs. I encourage teacher-librarians to share the syllabus with the curriculum director and administration.

If you are interested in providing a gift to one of our students in need, please review our 2022 Wish List. Once in the Google Sheet, type your name in the “Gift Giver” column next to the student you would like to purchase a gift for. We had a large number of requests for gift cards (highlighted yellow). We plan to use MBAEA Gives Back funds to supplement any children not chosen by a gift giver.

Gifts are due back Monday, December 12th, to allow time to be distributed before winter break. In Bettendorf, please turn in your items to Lindsey Hall. If you are in Bettendorf but purchased items for a student in another office, please still turn them into Lindsey; she will get them where they need to be. If you are in a satellite office, please turn your items into Anne (Clinton) or Trista (Muscatine). Please bring your gifts either unwrapped or in a gift bag to allow parents to view the gift before it is given to the child. MBAEA Gives Back will provide gift bags when needed. Gift cards will be distributed in an MBAEA Gives Back holiday card.

MBAEA Gives Back has partnered with Toys for Tots to be a donation drop-off location this year. Collection boxes have been placed at the Bettendorf, Clinton, and Muscatine services centers. New unwrapped toys will be collected now through early December. Historically, the toughest age group to fill are the 10-12-year-olds. Families or non-profit agencies can register children online to receive a toy, and distribution will begin December 10th. Numerous volunteer opportunities are also available.

Equipped for Reading Success A Comprehensive, Step-By-Step Program for Developing Phonemic Awareness and Fluent Word Recognition

In recent years, scientists have made great strides in understanding how children learn to read and how to prevent and correct most reading difficulties. However, the American Federation for Teachers, the Journal of Learning Disabilities, and the School Psychology Review have highlighted that these findings have not become widely known or used in our schools. Equipped for Reading Success is designed to summarize these research results in a clear and easy-to-read manner, bringing teachers up-to-date on these exciting findings.

TeachingBooks links directly to Vocabulary.com for easy access to definitions, pronunciations, and context.

• Scan the vocabulary list for any book that has one. (See, for example, the list for March Book One). Have students find unfamiliar words and check the definitions before they read.
• Use the audio pronunciation feature at Vocabulary.com to hear and review the new words.
• Compare each word's definition and context passages to reinforce understanding and comprehension.

AEA Learning Online launched a self-paced course on August 1st to increase the pool of substitute teachers across the state. The cost of the course is $150. Participants can register for the course at http://www.iowasubstitute.com.
