February is Black History Month!

As you know, February is Black History Month, and we are excited to continue our learning and celebration of Black Excellence! This year, our theme is:

"Black History: Rising Voices, Bold Futures – Celebrating Young Black Leaders and Their Global Impact."

Please mark your calendars for two major events happening on February 27th:

8:00-8:45 AM – Annual Black History Month Assembly - Our entire Meadow View community is invited to celebrate with us!

9:00-11:00 AM – Our First Read Your Heart Out Event!

Read Your Heart Out highlights Black authors and books while welcoming Black families, students, and community members to read in classrooms. This event also honors National African American Parent Involvement Day through the power of storytelling!

Who Can Participate?

Everyone is welcome to join and enjoy the amazing read-alouds we have selected for our students!

• If you are a Black or African American parent, teachers are actively reaching out via email, text, or phone call to personally invite you and assign you a time slot to read in classrooms.
• We have also contacted the Black Student Union of Sun Prairie West and East to join us and read to our Otters!
• Next week, we will open a Signup Genius for any other Meadow View caregivers and families who want to celebrate Black Excellence with us. Stay tuned for that link! For now, just save the date on your calendar.

What Books Will Be Read?

If you have a favorite children’s book that celebrates Black stories and authors, you are welcome to bring it and read it to the students. Otherwise, no worries! You can stop by the LGI and pick a book from our selection.

Meadow View Read Your Heart Out Planning Team

We believe in partnering with parents to provide an exceptional education for every child, every day. This year, we are excited to offer flexible options for parent/teacher conferences, ensuring that 100% of our students have the opportunity for a meaningful parent/family/teacher conference.

During the week of February 24–28, classroom teachers are offering 20–30 minute conferences. This winter, conferences are extra special because, for the first time, we are introducing Student-Led Conferences!

What are Student-Led Conferences?

For these conferences, your student will join you and take the lead during the first part of the meeting. They will proudly share their behavior and academic goals with you. It’s a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from your child about their progress and growth—so get ready to learn from them!

If you have additional questions or need clarification, please don’t hesitate to connect with your child’s classroom teacher.

We also understand that this time of year brings a lot of communication from us and the Sun Prairie Area School District, especially if you have children in multiple grades or buildings. This email is designed to simplify things and help you navigate the conference sign-up process.

If you have already signed up for a conference, there’s no need to do so again.

How to Sign Up for Conferences

Please find your child’s classroom teacher’s name and sign up for a 20–30 minute conference. In addition, our specialists are offering 10-minute conferences for parents who would like to meet with them.

This winter, all students in Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grades will have a vision screening done at school. Kindergarten students will also have a hearing screening done at this time. If you have a child in another grade that you would like us to screen or you do not want your child screened, please call the school health office at 608-478-5006.

Please ensure your child comes to school with appropriate winter gear every day. Students are expected to go outside for 30 minutes during recess, and it's essential they have gloves, snow pants, a winter jacket, boots, a scarf, etc., to stay warm and comfortable.

Exciting news, Meadow View families! Our Kindness Wall is officially live and spreading positivity throughout our school. This special wall is featured on the TV screens in the main hallway, showcasing heartfelt messages of appreciation and encouragement for everyone to see. We invite you to send a kind note to your child, their teachers, or our amazing staff—your words can brighten someone’s day and remind them how valued they are.

Our dear Mr. G has received an amazing career opportunity that he simply couldn’t pass up. As a result, he has made the difficult decision to transition from Meadow View to this new journey. His last day will be January 31, 2025.
We wish Mr. G the very best in his new adventure! Interviews for this open position will take place next week.

After seven years at Meadow View, Ms. Mona has decided to step back and focus on her health and family for the remainder of the school year. However, she will still be actively involved as a volunteer and facilitator of the Black Student Union at Meadow View.

We are going to miss Ms. Mona so much, but we fully support her decision to prioritize her health and family. The Building Sub position will be posted soon.

We want to inform you that Ms. Olivia Bambach, our Social Worker, is no longer working at Meadow View as she had to make the difficult decision to step back for personal reasons.
Starting Monday, Mrs. Alexander will be serving as our Social Worker until Spring Break. Please take a few minutes to learn more about her. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to her at alalexa@sunprairieschools.org.

Our very own Ms. Hamilton has accepted an opportunity to join the Token Springs team, while Mrs. Jessica Constanzo will be transferring to Meadow View. Please take a look at the attachment to get know a little bit more about Mrs. Constanzo.

As you may already know, beginning in Fall 2025, Meadow View will proudly host one of the two Spanish-English Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Programs for Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade.

Some parents have reached out with questions about the program and its impact on current Meadow View students. To keep you informed, I will include weekly updates in this newsletter about the Sun Prairie Spanish-English Dual Language Immersion Program. If you have specific questions about your child or family, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

Learn More About the SP Spanish-English Dual Language Immersion Program:

The Sun Prairie Area School District is proud to offer a bilingual Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program in select schools! Currently, the program is offered to two cohorts of students in Kindergarten and First Grade.

Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, the DLI program will be offered at both Northside Elementary and Meadow View Elementary. (Previously, Westside Elementary hosted the program, but it will shift to Meadow View to allow for more space in 2025-26 and beyond.)

For the 2025-2026 school year, a new cohort of kindergarten students will be formed with interested families from both schools. Additionally, all kindergarten students from Spanish-speaking households across the district will have the opportunity to participate in the program at either Northside or Meadow View.

Families eligible for this program will receive more details about upcoming spring information nights. Those interested will be able to complete a Spanish-English Dual Language Immersion application when it becomes available this spring.

• Will hosting the DLI program affect Meadow View’s school boundaries or current students? No. Meadow View has ample space to host the program without changing our current attendance boundaries or impacting existing students.

If your child will be absent from school OR has an appointment during the day, please call the attendance line (608.478.5000, #1). If you email your student's teacher about their absence or appointment, please include me in your email so I can get the message in a timely manner and forgo giving you a safety arrival call; or have your student in the office ready for you if you need to pick them up for an appointment. We always appreciate you letting us know in advance.

We wanted to provide some guidelines regarding birthday treats and appreciate your cooperation in ensuring the well-being and inclusivity of all students. Please take a moment to review the following reminders:

1. Accessibility and Allergies: When bringing in birthday treats, please ensure that the food labels are easily accessible to Kelsey and Madhu, our staff members at the front desk, who are responsible for allergy awareness. This allows them to check for any potential allergens that may affect students in the class.

2. Individually Packed Items: We kindly request that you consider providing individually packed items for birthday treats. This helps with portion control and ensures convenience for distribution. Individually packaged treats also minimize the risk of cross-contamination and promote cleanliness.

3. Non-Food Treats: We encourage you to explore the option of non-food treats for birthdays. Non-food items can be equally enjoyable and are a great way to celebrate while accommodating various dietary preferences and restrictions. Examples include small toys, stickers, pencils, or bookmarks.

4. No Class-Wide Food Items: To maintain a balanced and inclusive approach, we kindly ask that you refrain from providing class-wide food items such as pizzas or hot dishes. This helps prevent any potential disruptions to the regular meal routine and ensures that dietary restrictions are respected.

5. No Balloons: While we understand that balloons are often associated with celebrations, we kindly request that you refrain from bringing balloons to school. This is to maintain a safe and distraction-free environment for all students.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in following these guidelines. By working together, we can create inclusive celebrations that ensure the well-being of every student. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday our school day ends at 2:40; Thursday is at 1:30. Students need to be picked up promptly after dismissal.
