Their Testimony
You can't protect them from their testimony.
I saw that quote recently, and it has stuck with me. I've been pondering it as my own kids are growing up and entering a new season of life. As we begin to enjoy summer, I subconsciously dread the summer countdown that each year brings. 18 summers is all we get with our kiddos until they go out into the world as adults. My mind reels with am I doing enough, what if this or that happens, what if we aren't preparing them enough, what if, what if, what if, what if.
I want so bad to live in a bubble and protect them from all the crazy, unpredictable things of this world.
If I'm honest, I want that for myself, too. To live in comfort. To avoid actions that risk failure or pain. And when I can't control something that may be hard or uncomfortable, I end up worrying. Sometimes I worry so much about something I can not control, and it creeps in and creates overwhelming anxiety. That word that my pre-teens are already familiar with.
But when I look back over my life, my faith grew from times when I was not comfortable. When something was hard. When I was struggling and then finally grasped what it was to actually live by faith and rely on a God who loves me and is truly always with me and fights my battles for me.
If I don't let my kids learn through their own life experiences what it means to live by faith, they will never have a testimony. If I do everything I can to give them a perfect life and guaranteed success, when will they learn how to get through something hard? How will they learn to trust Jesus and have their own faith journey?
I am oddly comforted by this thought. Yes, they will go through things that are difficult, but that may be what it takes to grow their faith and for them to learn valuable life lessons. I may not be able to control every circumstance that comes their way, but that's where my own faith comes in. Trust. Trust. Trust. It can be so hard, can't it?
In this life, we can not avoid discomfort or unforeseen circumstances, but we can trust that God is so much bigger than what our finite minds can comprehend. There is a bigger purpose in this life, and God can use our circumstances to show that He is faithful and good. We just have to trust Him.
I pray that as my kids go through things that seem difficult, that their faith is strengthened. I pray their faith grows roots, and that they truly know Jesus personally. I hope they call on His name when things get hard because everything else just doesn't seem to work. I hope they can share a simple Gospel filled testimony of how they realized the magnitude of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. I hope they realize that He died for them because He loves them and wanted to make a way for them to go to Heaven. I hope they realize that no matter how perfect we all may try to appear, we will never be perfect enough. We can not earn our way to Heaven. We all need a Savior. And Jesus is that Savior we trust in.
I pray that as they go through the next chapters of life, they learn that life is full of change but the only thing unchanging is God. When we trust in Him and rely on Him and His powerful Word, He will direct us and guide us and give us peace. I know that as I pray this, God is working in ways that I can't even see in their lives and my own.
I'm reminded of the song Blessings by Laura Story
We pray for blessings
We pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep
We pray for healing, for prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering
And all the while, You hear each spoken need
Yet love is way too much to give us lesser things
'Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops?
What if Your healing comes through tears?
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You're near?
And what if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise?
What if my greatest disappointments
Or the aching of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can't satisfy?
And what if trials of this life
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are Your mercies in disguise?
We can not always avoid the hard things in life. We can not protect ourselves or our kids from everything. But what if through the hard, God is working to strengthen and refine our faith? Maybe you've been going through some hard, sleepless nights lately. Trust God that this will be a part of your testimony. That you will look back and see His hand on this difficult season.
For those with kids entering a new season of life, may they grow in their faith and have their own testimony to tell as God brings them through life. May we lay our anxieties aside and trust that God is going to guide their path and grow their faith (and ours) in the process. We serve such a faithful, trustworthy God!
