MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Students and Families,
We have successfully completed our first full week of school. I hope students are settling into a routine of their A and B day schedules. I'd like to share some important reminders for you regarding the safety and security of our students and staff. We need students to enter through the front doors in the morning and after lunch. Do not enter through the auditorium lobby. Also, students: do not prop open any doors, and do not open doors for anyone. This is a huge safety concern that would allow unknown adults and students from other schools in the building. This causes unnecessary security risks for all of us. Your safety is our most important priority.
I am excited to enter into National Latinx Heritage Month! The celebrations begin on Sunday, September 15th with El Grito de Independencia, which is one of the most important historical events in Mexico, as it marks the beginning of the fight for Mexican independence. Check out the events happening here in Portland this weekend at El Grito Portland 2024. At Franklin we celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of our students and staff who identify as Latinx and Hispanic this month and everyday. Stay tuned for information on student-led events and activities.
Have a great weekend!
Gracias,
Dr. Z

Optional PSAT for 11th Graders
Franklin High School will be offering the PSAT for 11th grade students on Wednesday, October 16th. This is NOT a mandatory test. This is an optional test that may allow students to qualify for scholarships. The PSAT/NMSQT is the only qualifying test for the National Merit® Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). For more information, visit www.nationalmerit.org.
The deadline to register for this exam is Friday, September 20th. The cost of the exam is $18 and may be paid at Franklin High School or through the School Pay website. Please see your counselor to see if you qualify for fee waivers.
The SAT will still be offered in March at no cost to all 11th grade students.
These exams will be digital and will require a school issued chromebook. More information about exam details will be forthcoming. If you have any questions, please contact Vice Principal Alfredo Quintero.
Pink Out Hoodies
Lightning Mart (Franklin's student store) students created a "Pink Out" Hoodie design to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. If you would like to purchase a hoodie ahead of the pink out football game this fall, here is the link. All proceeds will benefit breast cancer research. Thank you for considering!
PTSA NEWS
NEW: Pastini Fundraiser Day
Mark your calendars for our first restaurant partnership of the year on Thursday, October 3rd. Pastini will donate 40% of all sales from 11:00am-8:30pm to the Franklin PTSA. This includes dine-in and takeout (call-in only) and please remember you must mention Franklin High School when you order!
NEW: 2024-2025 Sponsors
The PTSA is thrilled to announce our first two sponsors of the year, each local businesses with standing ties to the community:
NEW: PTSA Grant Increase
Thanks to the generosity of the Franklin community, the PTSA was able to increase this year’s planned $10,000 in grants to $15,000! Please email presfhsptsa@gmail.com if you or your company would like to become a sponsor. Personal donations are gladly accepted through SchoolPay or by check in the main office, and are used to help fill in the funding gaps for all Franklin teachers and students.
Fundraising Opportunities That Don't Cost You a PENNY!
If you could play a part in earning money for the PTSA without spending a single extra penny, would you do it? Here are two excellent chances:
- Turn your Bottledrop rewards into Franklin High School PTSA grant dollars, staff appreciation, affinity club support, library support, and so much more. There are two ways to participate (both of which are completely FREE to you!): you can pick up a PTSA blue bag from the main office or donate your accumulated funds online.
- Fred Meyer Rewards allows you to link your card to a non-profit organization like Franklin High School PTSA, and we will receive a small percentage of your purchase amount each quarter, at no cost to you! Each year the PTSA earns about $2500 from this amazing fundraiser, but less than 100 FHS families participate. Imagine how much help we could provide the school if more families signed up and linked their card to the PTSA.
Wreath Sale Coming Soon...Help Needed!
It may still feel like summer, but we are hard at work gearing up for our annual wreath, garland and poinsettia sale, which will start soon. We are in need of a volunteer who is interested in learning more and shadowing the process this year, with the intent to take it over next year. If that sounds like something you're interested in, or would like to hear more details, please email commfhsptsa@gmail.com. It involves setting up an online sale on our Square page, communicating with the greenhouse, and arranging for delivery volunteers in November. It would be a great job for two people who work well together.
Getting Involved at Franklin
The Franklin PTSA is the primary source of volunteers for Franklin. If you are interested in helping out at the school, filling out this form is a great place to start. It will give our volunteer coordinators an idea of your interests and abilities, and it will add you to our database so you are kept informed about upcoming volunteer opportunities. You do not need to be a PTSA member to volunteer (but you should join if you haven't already!). You can also sign up to receive updates and volunteer requests.
You can become a member and support the PTSA on SchoolPay (click the link and scroll down to PTSA or search "PTSA" in the search bar) or on Oregon PTA's website (click the link and then scroll to Franklin High School PTSA). All PPS volunteers need to have a current background check on file, and to read through the district requirements.
LIBRARY NEWS
Welcome Back to the Franklin Library!
Welcome back to another fantastic year in the Franklin Library! The library is open from 8:15am-4:00pm every day. Your librarian is Ms. Frazee, and - wonderful news - library assistant Chris Hamilton will be joining us in the afternoons for two periods each day. We are so happy to have her support again this year. A huge thank you to the Franklin families who donated library funds during back to school registration - your generosity makes a huge difference in the library and allows me to say YES to more student book requests and projects!
If you missed coming to check out a textbook with your class, or you need textbooks for a newly added class you can stop by the library during class with a pass from your teacher. The library is also open for book, textbook, and calculator checkout after school until 4:00pm daily. If you end up dropping a class, please return the textbooks for that class as soon as possible.
OBOB Sign ups will begin in October; keep an eye on the library instagram for updates.
Please return any books you no longer need to the library, even if they're from another PPS school. Thank you! A few parents have reached out about wishlist items, and I've updated our Amazon wishlist for those who are interested.
THIS WEEKEND: Belmont Library Paper Collage Workshop
The Belmont Library renovation and expansion project team will be hosting a Community Paper Collage Workshop at the Belmont Street Fair (SE Belmont St from SE 33rd to SE 39th, near the Kids Zone) on Saturday, September 14th, from 10:00am-2:00pm. The collages that folks make will be used as inspiration for the art wall in the new lobby of the future Belmont Library.
SUN NEWS
What is SUN?
The Franklin SUN Program supports the community through clubs, after school programs, volunteer opportunities, resources, academic, and emotional support. You can find them in Room SS-110 on Mondays through Thursdays, from 9:30am-5:30pm. Here is some of what SUN does in our community:
- SUN is hosting a Club Creation Workshop on Wednesday, September 4th during lunch in the library and Thursday, September 5th after school in the library. Students can learn how to create a club or bring one back from previous years, how to approach staff to become a club advisor, and prepare for the Club Fair.
- The Annual Club Fair will be held on Thursday, September 19th in the main entrance/front lawn (fingers crossed the sun is still out) right after school for students to take a look at clubs and partner programs being offered.
- SUN will also be hosting their 2nd Annual B2S Free Clothing Pop-up during the Club Fair for students who weren't able to get new fits before the school year started. Local business Yoonique Tea will be selling boba drinks for $6 with a free topping. Stop by if you can!
- SUN provides paid and volunteer internship opportunities. They will be opening their Intern Application on Tuesday, September 3rd via Instagram, Trivory, and fliers around the building. This is for Peer Tutors and Supper/Snack Servers.
- If anyone in your community or students' family members are interested in learning English, SUN partners with Portland State to provide Free Adult ESL classes in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. They just need to be 18+ and classes are held at Franklin.
- If you are needing assistance with utility bills, food, hygiene and household supplies, and clothing services, SUN may be able to help. Please fill out this form for more information.
SUN Programming will be starting on Monday, September 23rd with Tutoring and Supper/Snack being offered after school. Students can follow SUN on Instagram or stop by Room SS-110 to learn more.
ATHLETICS
NEW: FAB Tailgate
You will not want to miss Franklin Athletic Boosters' Annual Tailgate Party on Friday, September 3rd, starting at 5:00pm, just before the Franklin/Beaverton football game. There will be food carts, music, games, new FHS apparel, and much more! The theme is FRANKLIN PROUD. Wear your new or vintage Franklin gear!
