Welcome
Second Graders and Parents
Welcome Letter
Dear Parents and Families,
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! I hope that everyone had a fun and well-deserved summer break. This upcoming year, I will be teaching 2nd grade, along with Ms. Foster. Each 2nd grade classroom will be self-contained. However, we will work in tandem to make sure that both classes are following a similar schedule and working on the same material throughout the year. Information about the current school year will be posted on my SLPS webpage regularly (https://www.slps.org/Domain/14590) and messages to parents will be published using Classdojo.
This year, second graders will be part of the oldest students on the first floor, opportunities will be given for them to develop, maintain, and demonstrate to others their growing leadership skills. From participating in the ambassador committee, to participating in morning announcements quarterly , 2nd graders will have a chance to show they can be independent and organized to help parts of school and class systems efficiently and effortlessly.
Most of the work will be split using the iPad, and pencil and paper this year. iPads may be kept in the classroom during the week to ensure that all students are ready and iPads are charged and safe.
I am very eager about this school year and the opportunities we can give to our students! As a team in 2nd grade, we will work hard to ensure that your child reaches his/her highest goals.
Expectations:
- Being Respectful: We expect each student to show respect to his/her classmates and all adults;
- Being Responsible: We expect every student to be prepared daily to begin his/her work. Parents please see that your child is prepared and ready every day;
- Being Safe: We expect each child to follow all classroom rules in order to have an effective and safe learning environment. Rules will be discussed about and reviewed/rewritten as a class.
ELA: Learn to effectively match letters to sounds, decode/spell sight words, and write complete sentences. This will aid then in recalling stories and learning new prefixes and suffixes.
Math: Learners will learn how to add and subtract mentally up to two digits, understand place value to the hundreds place (three digits), and measure in standard units (ex: inches, feet, etc.).
Social Studies: American History
Science: States of matter, and plants.
Homework:
Homework will be given daily and due the following day. All homework will be handed as a paper copy in a take home folder. Please keep in mind all homework assignments are an extension of what your child is learning and understanding in class.
As a team, we look forward to a great school year and meeting all of our parents! You can contact me through ClassDojo, email or phone (arnez.butler@slps.org and 314-502-9629).
Thank you, Ms. Butler-Grade 2
