School Attendance Initiative: Haleiwa Elementary School's Iwa Essence Store
School attendance is a key predictor of student success, and Haleʻiwa Elementary School is excited to introduce a new initiative aimed at encouraging regular attendance. Students can earn an ʻIwa Buck each day they come to school. Additionally, every week, students have the opportunity to earn a $5 ʻIwa Bucks bonus through the ESSENCE lottery.
On Thursdays, students reflect on one of the ESSENCE traits—Honor, Respect, or Kindness & Love—and the admin team will spin the lottery wheel on Friday morning. If the wheel lands on a trait that a student reflected on, they will earn the bonus. All students who selected the chosen trait that week will also receive the bonus.
The ʻIwa ESSENCE Store will be stocked with items students can purchase using their ʻIwa Bucks. It will be open twice a month, with each homeroom shopping during their scheduled time. Parent volunteers will coordinate the store’s stocking and hours based on availability, and it will be located in J-6.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all of our parent volunteers for helping us organize and staff the ʻIwa ESSENCE Store. A big mahalo also goes out to everyone who selflessly donated items to the store!
2025 WHIS Basketball Team Visit
This coming March, our Haleʻiwa Elementary students will be participating in an exciting intramural basketball tournament with the Mililani School Complex. We were fortunate to have Darnell Arceneaux (Coach D), the Athletic Director at Waialua High and Intermediate School (WHIS), visit our school with his basketball coach and players—two of whom are former Haleiwa Elementary graduates.
Coach D and his team took the time to inspire our students and help them prepare for the tournament. They shared valuable stories of how sports have played a role in their success both in school and in life, and encouraged our students to explore sports opportunities at WHIS when the time comes. They also emphasized the importance of balancing academics with athletics, offering practical advice on how to effectively manage both.
A huge thank you to Coach D and the WHIS basketball team for visiting Haleʻiwa Elementary and speaking to our students! Your words of encouragement and support mean so much, and we’re excited to see how your visit will continue to inspire our students as they prepare for the tournament.
Waialua Art Show
Waialua High and Intermediate School hosted an art show on January 15. The event showcased the talent and creativity of our complex school community. Several of our Haleʻiwa Elementary students submitted their artwork for the event.
Kipapa Elementary School Visit
On January 17, 2025, Kipapa Elementary School visited Haleʻiwa Elementary to explore the innovative ways we’re integrating ag tech and real-world applications into our curriculum to boost student engagement. During their visit, the Kipapa staff toured several grade-level projects, including the Grade 2 Butterfly Garden, Grade 3 Compost/Vermicast program, Grade 5 Glowforge creations, and the Grade 6 Herb Garden. These hands-on initiatives are helping to connect students with the natural world while developing important skills for the future.
Waialua High and Intermediate Lion Dance Visit
On January 28, 2025, Ian Cablay, Band Director at Waialua High and Intermediate School and this year’s Leilehua-Mililani-Waialua Complex Area Teacher of the Year, brought his Lion Dance group to perform at Haleʻiwa Elementary School. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the performance and had the opportunity to interact with the lions!
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Mr. Cablay and his students for providing this wonderful cultural experience for our students!
