Stratford STEM School Library Info
SCHOOL LIBRARY INFORMATION
Dear families:
Welcome to the Stratford STEM Magnet School library! The high school librarian is Diane Chen and the middle school librarian is Lauren Kennedy. We are excited to support your child on their journey to becoming a lifelong reader and learner. Our primary focus is to support the district's efforts to improve the focused outcomes of students in the area of literacy by helping your child discover the love of reading and grow as an independent reader. Our library is a space of voluntary inquiry where students are welcome to explore and select books and materials that support their academic needs and their unique reading interests. It is an honor to be part of your child's educational journey, and it is our hope that our school library will be a place of wonder to them.
We are here to partner with you and will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you have.We are available to discuss your child's reading interests and needs any time.
How Library Materials Are Selected
Our materials have been carefully selected according to our district's selection policy, and they reflect the age and maturity levels of the students in our school. They are also aligned to the educational mission of MNPS, our school, and our district. We periodically review library materials to ensure they are age appropriate for our students
MNPS mission: We deliver a great public education to every student every day.
MNPS Libraries mission: Metro Nashville Public Schools Libraries develop students who are critical thinkers and thoughtful users of information through teaching, collaboration and a rich collection of resources. Our school libraries are diverse, student-centered learning hubs that promote teacher and student success through collaboration, inquiry, and literacy across all disciplines. We ensure equitable services and access to high quality, educational, relevant resources for students.
Every book is not for every reader, but every child should have access to books they may want to read. MNPS librarians strive to know our learners and assist them in finding books that fit their needs and interests. If your student checks out any library material your family deems inappropriate, please return the item to the school. Please talk with your child about your expectations for content they consume. Please partner with me so that I can understand your child's needs.
Limitless Libraries
Our partnership with the Nashville Public Library, which is called Limitless Libraries, provides your child with access to books and materials at the Nashville Public Library. Your student may place a hold on an item, and it will be delivered to them at their school. We are grateful for this partnership that provides even more access to library materials. Last year, students in MNPS checked out nearly 100,000 items through Limitless Libraries.

The following policies apply to the access of Limitless Libraries materials:
- Elementary students (grades K-5) can only place holds on items in the juvenile catalog while in the school building. If they are searching from home, we recommend they log-in the catalog first and select their school from the drop-down menu so that they are only searching in the juvenile catalog.
- Middle School and High School students (grades 5-12) have access to the full catalog.
- While students may request a DVD, no student may place a hold on a rated R item.
Have a concern?
Set-up a time to meet:
If you have a concern about a book, please know that I am here to help. Please meet with me to discuss your concerns. I am here to partner with you to support your child's reading needs and interests. I am happy to learn more about the needs you have for your child. I can put supports in place for your child.
Opt-Out of Limitless Libraries:
If you prefer that your child not be able to receive items from the public library at school, I can provide you with the Limitless Libraries “Opt-Out” form. Please complete the form and return it to me.
Opting out only means your child will not receive items delivered to school. Your student may still visit any Nashville Public Library branch and check out items in person. They will also still be able to access Limitless Libraries databases.
Link your Nashville Public Library card:
Parents/ Guardians who have a Nashville Public Library card may link their card to their student’s card, which would allow them to see what their student currently has checked out and what is on hold. While MNPS Libraries believes in a reader's right to privacy, we understand this may be your preference. We encourage you to discuss this with your child as well as expectations for the content they consume.
If a current MNPS parent/guardian, student, or staff member has a concern about a specific title(s). You are encouraged to discuss this with their school librarian first. If you decide further action is needed, you may pursue the “Reconsideration” process. Information about the process can be found here.
