THE TAPESTRY OF MICHIGAN SOCIETY C.A.R.
Have you ever wondered where our past C.A.R. State President’s are NOW??! or wanted to know how or whether they have put their experience and talents as a State President into use?
Being an active C.A.R. member has countless benefits that have not only given our youth the confidence to serve the state society but have also prepared them for significant life transitions such as school to work life. What are some of those skills, you ask?
C.A.R. provides each member the opportunity to learn and practice soft skills such as leadership, time management, communication, problem solving, and critical work ethic skills. Active members actively participate in community service, honoring our veterans, and learn about historic preservation.
Each C.A.R. member who strives to be State President not only has the support of his/her family, but from an army of dedicated senior leaders to support and guide their success. Did you know that many of those senior leaders served as the Michigan Society State President!?
For the next Wolverine newsletter two (2) past State President’s will answer key questions and share their stories. We hope to inspire future leadership to not only continue the traditions but also champion new opportunities.
Are you interested in becoming a part of the MICHIGAN SOCIETY C.A.R. Tapestry – be the next STATE PRESIDENT?

LETTER FROM: PRESIDENT PARKER HAGLE
Hi Everyone!
I can’t believe I am half way through my term and have done so much already. I have been able to meet so many amazing people from DAR, SAR, C.A.R. as well as from my community. It has been a busy fall,
I have attended many Grave Markings, visited many DAR and SAR Chapters and local C.A.R. Societies! I was honored to present my State Project at the Sunday brunch at the DAR of Michigan State Conference and received the DAR Youth Leadership Medal from Madam State Regent Mrs. Dawn Brady!
My family and I attended the MISSAR BOM Meeting and presented my project. Thank you to all the members of MISSAR and DAR for their support!
I had a great October meeting At Dow Gardens in Midland MI. The weather was great, we were able to have our board meeting outside before we went on the canopy walk. Thank you to all who joined in this beautiful day!
I had the privilege of attending the Ground Breaking of Tunnel To Towers with my Sr. Deb Rakoczy and her husband Mr. Dave. Tunnel To Towers bought an old Holiday Inn and is turning it into housing for homeless Veterans. We were able to tour an apartment they already had completed so we could see what their housing would look like. We also got to take a virtual tour with VR Goggles to see what the finished product will look like of the whole Facility!
Congratulations to Honorary State President Rodney Modell for all that he has accomplished! We all came together on October 20th At Great Lakes National Cemetery for the dedication of the “Battle on the Homefront Memorial” for the unveiling of his monument.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the 92nd State Conference at the Hyatt House in East Lansing, MI. February 28, 2025 and March 1, 2025!
Thank you for everyone's support of C.A.R.!
Parker Hagle, M.S.C.A.R.State President Restoring Hope

LETTER FROM SR. PRESIDENT DEB RAKOCZY
Hi All!
I am still getting used to it getting pitch black outside at 5pm. How about you? Plus – it has been a busy Fall. Parker and I have been to Grave Markings, Dedications and a Groundbreaking. We have visited our “parent” organizations annual meetings and many local C.A.R. Societies, DAR and SAR Chapters!
It was a thrill for M.S.C.A.R. to be invited to partner with the Sashabaw Plains DAR Chapter and the Jeramiah Clark SAR Chapter for America 250! Grave Markings in September. Plans are in the works for the next Grave Markings in 2025 and 2026!
Gina LaCroix - DAR State Chair for the Children of the American and I had blast representing M.S.C.A.R. at the DAR of Michigan State Conference Committee Table! It is always fun for me to see and visit with the Honorary M.S.C.A.R. State Presidents at State Conference. Parker was one of the guest speakers at the Sunday Brunch and it was my privilege to be able to warm up the crowd and to introduce her. Thank You to Madam State Regent – Dawn Brady – for giving me that opportunity.
We had a great day on October 5th for the outside Board Meeting in the Children’s Garden at Dow Gardens. Then we all enjoyed the Canopy Walk! A Super Big Thank You to Cindy LeMarbe and Nicole Hagle for bringing the “Snack Wagon” for all to enjoy throughout the day! Thanks to all that came out!
Parker, her Mom, Grandpa, Aunt Gina and Uncle Dale attended the MISSAR BOM Meeting in October and Parker presented her Project. Thank You to State President Joe Williams, Bob Craig - MISSAR 2nd Vice-President and all of the members of the SAR for their support!
I was amazed to attend the Tunnel to Towers (T2T) Veterans Village Groundbreaking. This wonderful organization purchased an old Holiday Inn Express in Southfield and is converting it into apartments for Homeless Veterans. When completed next year – it will be able to house over 85 Homeless Veterans and provide many services for them! Parker, Dave and I were able to attend the Groundbreaking, tour an Apartment, take a virtual tour with the VR Goggles to see all that the facility will have to offer our Homeless Veterans. T2T is the organization that our National President Emerson Sites-Byers - is partnering with for his National Project!
I am beyond proud of Honorary State President – Rodney Modell – and all that he has accomplished! On October 20, 2024, we gathered at Great Lakes National Cemetery (GLNC) to attend the dedication of the “Battle on the Homefront Memorial”. During his year as State President – Rodney raised funds for a Memorial Monument to be placed on the Memorial Walkway at GLNC to Honor and Remember all of our Veterans that lost their battle at home to suicide. Additionally – Rodney raised funds for organizations that help Veterans. Mission 22, Mission 6 and Vets Returning Home each received over $2,000. Way to go Rodney!
SAVE the DATES for our 92nd State Conference in East Lansing, MI. February 28, 2025 and March 1, 2025. I hope that you will be able to join us at the Hyatt House. Information and Forms are in this issue of The Wolverine.

2. Design displays and pamphlets about N.S.C.A.R. to hand out at community hotspots such as Libraries, Children Museums, etc.
3. Host “pop-up” events and distribute information about C.A.R. via brochures, water bottles with C.A.R. website attached, etc.
- Experiential learning activities at local fairs, festivals, or parks such as making mini crafts, colonial games, etc.
- Organize “Red, White, Blue Flag Football”, 5K’s, parades, etc.
4. Excite other patriotic and parent organizations by sharing the joys and importance of C.A.R. membership through sing-alongs, skits, and other presentations
5. Call upon members to create media and virtual content to share how much fun C.A.R. is
6. Encourage member engagement through attendance raffles and buddy systems
7. Plan fun activities and trips, outside of meetings, with your local society to festivals, amusements parks, or other fun places
8. Maintain contact with prospective members that come to meetings/events to keep them engaged

America 250 Committee Chair - Emma Nelson
Introducing America 250! which is a new contest to help celebrate America! We are getting ready for the USA to turn 250 years old so societies are encouraged to learn about history that happened between March 1, 1774 and June 30, 1775.
1774
· British pass Intolerable Acts (March 31-June 22)
· First Continental Congress (September 5-October 26)
· Suffolk Resolves, Suffolk County, Massachusetts (September 9)
· Greenwich Tea Party (December 22)
1775
· Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride (April 18)
· Battles of Lexington and Concord, followed by the Siege of Boston (April 19)
· Gunpowder Incident (April 20)
· Fort Ticonderoga captured by Ethan Allen, Bendict Arnold and the Green Mountain Boys (May 10)
· Second Continental Congress meets (May 10)
· Continental Army is created from local militias (June 14)
· Battle of Bunker Hill (June 17)
Some great ideas to help celebrate could be skits, creating games/trivia activities, present a program, attend/host a commemorative event, create and informational video/song/film and share, or recreate what would these events look like today. These are just ideas and you can be creative and do other things. Whatever you do, don’t forget to document and take lots of pictures! I look forward to seeing pictures of what you do.

This year I was lucky enough to go to Washington D.C. twice. I was able to go for the national conference and then was able to go with my school a month later. we were able to go to gettysburg. learning about the history of what happened on those grounds was so neat. I got to see the memorial for the 3rd Michigan Infantry, it was dedicated in 1889 for the veterans that fought in gettysburg. We also got to go to the Holocaust museum, the smithsonians, flight 93 memorial, and the state Capitol building. It was such a neat trip that I could talk about it alot. I like how they keep the national heritage alive so that people can learn about it.

Hi! My name is Morgan Hughes and I am your State Chair of American History!
I recently spent 4 days in Washington D.C. on my 8th grade trip and learned soooo
much about American History! Here is a photo of my best friend and me in front of
the Lincoln Memorial.
I also spent time at the Vietnam Memorial looking up soldiers on the Wall from Dearborn
where I live. It was a very moving experience.
I encourage all of you to learn about American History in any way you can.
I will be headed to the great city of Chicago this summer for our Churches' Youth mission trip.
I am excited to learn there too.
Have a great summer and learn!

C.A.R. Day of Service - Macie Hagle
Macie Hagle here, your Founders Day Chairperson, to remind you that our annual C.A.R Day of Service. I asked all C.A.R members, seniors, and supporters to complete service activities in your community around April 5th, in honor of the founding of the national society C.A.R. on April 5th 1895.
Can’t think of ways to help? Here’s some ideas:
Clean up trash at your local park/waterway
Volunteer at a food pantry/donate food
Volunteer at a homeless shelter/VFW
Clean up/pull weeds at your local cemetery
Volunteer at your local library
Volunteer at your local animal shelter
Show your community what C.A.R. can do and what it was created for.
* THERE IS NO CONTEST FOR THIS PROGRAM *
Everyone is encouraged to be in their community through volunteering for the sake of making the community better, which in itself is the reward! Remember to have fun and enjoy these activities, don’t forget to turn in your community service hours to the national website nscar.org!
Be sure to send your C.A.R. Day of Service articles and photos to Mrs. Royse for the next Wolverine.
Conservation Committee Chair, Molly Hughes
Hello, my name is Molly Hughes and I am your State Chair for Conservation!
I love nature, being outside and exploring. Here is a photo of me canoeing
at Howell Nature center on my 5th grade class trip!
I am standing here in a photo with my Principal Mrs. Peterson. Today was my
5th grade promotion and I was given the Americanism Award, I was surprised!
Try to remember to "CONSERVE". Try to cut down on buying plastic things,
containers and toys. I know it is hard, but plastic is everywhere, and we use
too much of it.
I challenge you to collect all the small plastic items that you would normally
recycle and save them to make something cool with! See the photo here! There is
so much to collect and so many colors! I will hand out more information at our
packet meeting in Gaylord. See you then!

GOVERNMENT STUDIES - MICHAEL WOLVEN
Hello, I am Michael Wolven chair for government studies, and I had recently set up a trip to lansing. The trip was overall successful. We were able to go and visit the state capital and the house floor. We learned that the Michigan House of Representatives can make bills and bring them to the floor for voting. If the majority of the votes are yes then the bill has passed. I would like to thank Rep. Maddock one of our state representatives for allowing us the time to come visit. Thank you for the wonderful lunch as well. I would also like to thank our C.A.R. State President Parker Hagle and the other C.A.R. members that were in attendance.
Sincerely,
Michael Wolven

Veterans Committee - Danielle Nowicki
Veterans Chair – Danielle Nowicki
On November 11 we honor military veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. World War I ended when an armistice (the fighting stopped) between the Allied nations and Germany occurred on the 11th hour of the 11th month, 1918. President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first Armistice Day in 1919. Between 1919 to 1971, the dates to commemorate this event changed around and then Veterans Day was celebrated in place of Armistice Day on November 11, 1971 and continues to be celebrated on November 11. We give thanks and honor all Veterans who have served our country!
PATRIOTIC EDUCATION - CHARLIE KOSTUN
Meet Charlie Kostun, Patriotic Education State Chair
I'm Charlie. I'm 4 1/2. I love the American Flag and Pledge of Allegiance. Blue is my favorite color! What will do you with your society to help tell others about our country? I love wearing my flag bathing suit and telling people the pledge. I'm also going to be in a 4th of July parade with my family and Lexington Alarm Society! Our house needs a new flag, so we are also going to have a flag retirement ceremony this summer.
PUBLIC RELATIONS - HONORARY PRESIDENT RODNEY MODELL

We share all of our fun meetings, events, and activities on social media, newspapers, magazines, schools, churches, work places, etc!
Will you be participating in a parade this summer? Make sure to use banners promoting your local/State/ National society, and take LOTS of pictures!! Volunteering to serve Veterans or your community? Post about it on Facebook, Instagram, etc. Let everyone know how awesome the C.A.R. is!!"

Macie Hagle, age 12, Elias Cady Society President
On October 5th 2024, Parker Hagle, Michigan Society State President, had her 4th state meeting at Dow Gardens in Midland.
To start off the day we had our meeting with Parker’s update on her State project Restoring Hope in the children’s garden area. After the meeting we made our way to the elevated trail and the swaying canopy walk and walked among the trees. We had a lot of fun exploring and going on some of the activities up in the trees. After we had finished the walk we all sat around on the grass eating snacks before we went home. All of us had so much fun that day experiencing all the nature and animals we had seen such as turtles ,birds, ducks, deer, etc.
It was great to see members from different parts of Michigan! We had members from Elias Cady Society, Lt. Isiah Fuller Society, Ki-Ka-Ma-Sung Society, and Lewis Cass Society.

Revolutionary War Family Grave Marking
September 7, 2024
By: Ella Malott, Corresponding Secretary, Elias Cady Society and Lincoln Malott, Historian, Elias Cady Society
On Saturday, September 7, 2024 we participated in the Revolutionary War Family Grave Marking for Private Caleb Barton Merrill, Sarah Jackson Merrill, and Charlotte Merrill Pratt. The event was a joint effort of the D.A.R. Sashabaw Plains Chapter, S.A.R. Jeremiah Clark Chapter, and the Michigan Society Children of the American Revolution.
We dressed in colonial attire, greeted guests, and handed out programs. Our C.A.R. State President, Parker Hagle, was one of the hosts of the event. The speakers dressed up and told the story of their lives.
Lincoln really enjoyed being asked by S.A.R. Jeremiah Clark Chapter to join the color guard. He carried the D.A.R. flag. He hopes to participate in more color guard presentations in the future. He was presented with a challenge token and a cockade for his hat.
Even though it was a really cold day, everyone enjoyed the grave marking dedication. We hope to participate in similar events in the future.

Elias Cady Society September Meeting
September 22, 2024
Henry Aldrich, Elias Cady Society Registrar
On Sunday, September 22nd Elias Cady Society met to talk about our 2024-2025 Michigan CAR State Project Restoring Hope. Our State President, Parker Hagle, presented information about the Restoring Hope program to help our veterans and their service dogs. Blue Star Service Dogs are located in Pinckney, MI. Their mission is to provide our Military Veterans and First Responders diagnosed with PTSD and TBI another method of healing through companionship and training. President Parker shared some fundraising items available by a donation, including buttons, and stickers, T shirts and other items that include the Restoring Hope logo. The goal is to raise $13,000 this year to help provide training and dog leashes and harnesses to help their cause.
Our member, Lincoln Malott gave a presentation about Deborah Sampson. She was a courageous Revolutionary War Patriot in Massachusetts. She fought in the war as a man and was scared she would get caught if they found out she was a woman. She got shot in the war in the shoulder and continued to fight with the bullet because she didn’t want to get caught. She also fought to get paid for her service and Congress finally gave her the pension she deserved.
We signed two new members to Elias Cady Society. Welcome Bella and Abby, of Waterford. President Macie Hagle, Historian Lincoln Malott, Registrar Henry Aldrich and Sr. President Linda Royse signed their applications at our September meeting.
Interviewing a First Responder and Making Veterans Keychains plus pizza party too!
Macie Hagle, President Elias Cady Society
On November 3rd 2024 the Elias Cady society went to Gino's Pizzeria to make keychains for veterans.
We all had pizza and breadsticks together before making keychains.
We reached over our goal of 50 keychains for veterans.
I, Macie Hagle society president, interviewed a first responder to help our society learn more about what he thinks about being a first responder himself. Mr. Jeff Kesselring answered all of my questions. My two favorite questions and answers were these two.
1. How did September 1, 2001 (9-1-1) impact you and your job? “It changed how we policed and new way of training”.
2. If you could be anything you wanted to be what would it be? “I couldn’t imagine being anything else”.
At the end we all picked tags from the "angel tree: for things to buy for the Crossnore schools! It was a very fun day that we all had spending time together making keychains! We also signed a new application too.
