Lockdown Drill - Oct. 2
On Wednesday Oct. 2nd, we are going to practice our Lockdown Drill. We practice this drill to make sure we are ready in the event that we should have an intruder in the building. This is different from a Lockout drill, which is intended to keep the bad guys out of our building. During a Lockout drill school continues as it normally would except that no students are allowed outside, and all of our exterior doors are secured and monitored.
A Lockdown drill is used when a violent person or threat is in or on the grounds of the campus. There are no class changes, and everyone remains in their room. All doors, windows, and classrooms are locked until the “All Clear” signal is given.
I want to emphasize that this is just a drill, and I anticipate never having to use this drill. But in the event that something should happen here at Moorhead Junior High, we will be prepared.
Our building camera system is monitored throughout the day by Officer Quiller and the front office personnel. Additionally, adults entering our school must have their ID’s scanned and checked by our Raptor management scanner which helps us prevent anyone with a criminal history from entering the building. Additionally, Conroe ISD has over 80 police officers and is the third largest law enforcement agency in Montgomery County.

It's the Law
Texas law now requires school districts to distribute information to parents and guardians about the safe storage of firearms. The information linked at the bottom of the page will help you learn about options for, as well as how to talk to your child and others about, the safe storage of firearms. In 2021, 4,613 Texans experienced gun-related deaths. The Texas Department of State Health Services (SHS) reports that 55% of Texas firearms deaths in 2020 were suicides and that 59% of all suicides in Texas were by firearms. Suicide attempts involving firearms have a 90% fatality rate. Restricting access to guns is critical in reducing acts of violence, whether as self-harm or towards others. Acts of mass violence and interpersonal violence often end in suicide. It is unlawful to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm. Under Texas Penal Code 46.13, a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence: • Failed to secure the firearm; or • Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access The penalty for allowing a child access to a firearm can range from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by a $4000 fine, a year in jail, or a combination of the two). Texas exempts the purchase of firearm safety equipment from Texas Sales and Use Tax. Remember, a gun should be stored unloaded in a safe or locked container, with ammunition stored elsewhere. You can learn more and find additional resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety at https://safegunstoragetexas.com. Safe gun storage is critical to preventing suicide, unintentional shootings, and other tragedies.

Anonymous Alerts
Conroe ISD will continue implementation of the Anonymous Alerts – anti bullying app. Anonymous Alerts is a patented student anti-bullying app that helps combat bullying and other negative activity in schools by empowering students to come forward to help themselves and other students. Social and peer pressures are some of the hardest obstacles for students to overcome, now they can report bullying and safety issues quickly using Anonymous Alerts mobile app.
Students or parents in the school community can anonymously submit alerts about suspicious activity, safety threats, bullying, alcohol or drug use, harassment, family issues, school shooter, campus safety concerns, and self-harm issues to school administrators or counselors. The app is free from the Apple Store, Google Play store, and the Chrome store. Students will still have the option to call Kid Chat to report anything at 1-800-kid-chat.
