8th Grade Announcement
NJHS: The application process for 8th graders to apply to the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is now open! This is an opportunity for students who excel in scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. We encourage all eligible students to take the initiative and show their leadership skills by checking their school emails for the application link. Being a part of NJHS is not only an honor but also a chance to grow as a leader and make a positive impact on our school community. For more information on the process please visit our NJHS page.

Guided Study
This week, guided study is taking the shift we mentioned during our curriculum night.
All students will receive Tier I intervention instruction specific to our school improvement goals of math and literacy using district curriculum provided computer programs, such as Lexia for ELA, and Zearn and Khan Academy for math. These programs will monitor and adjust based on how well the students are progressing and are intended to fill learning gaps. Once all guided study assignments are completed, students may work on extension activities, read silently, or work on homework. Fridays will be split between leadership skill development, study and organization skill development, social-emotional learning based on RULER and DESSA, and addressing behavior trends that arise.
The students who scored in the bottom 25% of MAP scores have been further analyzed for smaller, more intensive interventions in particular standard areas. We used district approved screeners for fluency, phonics, and comprehension, as well as basic math facts screeners, so we can get to the root causes of the lower scores. The small groups will then focus solely on the skills gaps of students for that intervention cycle. After the intervention cycle, if there are still gaps, they will continue in small groups...if they have mastered it, they move back to Tier 1 extra support.
For students who are in the upper-performance band, we are creating opportunities for them to go above and beyond. Our high-performing NJHS students will be pulled for service hours tutoring 5th grade classes, and non-NJHS high-performing students may be asked to take part in our student advisory - a group of students who help solve specific problems on campus.

Athletics Heat-Related Information
As you know, fall sports tryouts and practices have begun in Madison middle schools, despite the high temperatures. While we cannot control the heat, we can take steps to ensure all athletes are safe. We would like to take this opportunity to inform you about the protocols our coaches and site athletic directors take before, during and after tryouts, practices and competitions to avoid any heat related illnesses.
All coaches and athletic directors at Madison schools receive and follow guidance provided through the Trust and the Valley Athletic Conference to which we belong. Below are the protocols staff are expected to follow to prevent and/or treat heat related illnesses should they occur.
We are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all of our student-athletes. Your partnership in reinforcing these safety measures at home is invaluable. Together, we can ensure that our students enjoy a healthy and successful athletic season.
