Celebrating Women's History Month
Each March, our schools take the opportunity to honor and recognize the achievements women have made in social, economic, cultural, and political spheres around the world.
This year’s theme focuses on equity, diversity, and inclusion.
During this segment, we are going to hear from women school leaders as well as female students in leadership positions at Revere High, CityLab, Rumney Marsh, Whelan, Susan B. Anthony, and Hill School on what Women’s History Month means to them, why they choose to be leaders, what female figures inspired them, and what they are doing to advance equity and inclusion in their school or life!
Gov. Healey Reads to Whelan School Students as Part of Read Across America Week
Gov. Maura Healey during her visit to the Whelan School
In celebration of ‘Read Across America,” Gov. Maura Healey joined Revere elected officials at Whalen Elementary School last Wednesday and read to students and discussed the importance of learning this valuable life skill.
“It's so, so important to learn how to read,” Healey told Whelan students. “You can read any book and learn anything and everything about the whole world just by reading. But you know, you're not just born knowing how to read. Somebody's got to teach you how to read, and you have to put the time in, but so we're here to help you.”
The Healey-Driscoll administration recently proposed a five-year initiative, starting with a proposed $30 million in funding in the FY25 budget, for Literacy Launch: Reading Success from Age 3 through Grade 3. The new approach to improving early literacy education in the state will help make sure schools, educators, and students aged 3 through grade 3 have access to the highest quality, evidence-based reading instruction available.
“Through Literacy Launch, we want to bring the best reading resources to our schools and set kids up for a lifetime of learning,” said Healey. “Thanks to the students and educators at Whelan Elementary in Revere for inviting us into your classroom.”
RPS Celebrates Ramadan on RevereTV’s Family Liaison Cooking Series
CityLab’s Ouafa Kinaoui Makes Moroccan Tea, Shares the Traditions of the Islamic Holiday
Estaphany Rodriguez, the Family and Community Coordinator for Revere Public Schools, hosted a special segment on RevereTV’s Family Liaison Cooking Series.
In celebration of Ramadan, Rodriguez welcomed CityLab High School’s family liaison, Ouafa Kinaoui, who demonstrates the art of making traditional Moroccan tea.
Ramadan, the holiest month of the Islamic year, started at sunset on Sunday, March 10, and will end at sunset on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. During this time, observers must abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk for 30 days.
Kinaoui is known in the RPS community for her delicious Moroccan mint tea, which she serves at CityLab to guests and dignitaries visiting the school.
First Annual Women's Forum
On March 28th, Superintendent Dr. Dianne Kelly took part in the Abraham Lincoln School's First Annual Women's Forum.
Dr. Kelly was joined on stage by some incredibly inspiring women, like Revere Fire Lieutenant Erin Leary, State Rep. Jessica Giannino, Attorney Nedhi Teixeira, President of Pride Motor Group Suzanne Iovanna, Orthopedic Physician Assistant Jenn Steele, RPD Captain Amy O'Hara, and School Committee Co-Chair Jacqueline Monterroso.
Throughout the event, the panel answered poignant questions from Lincoln students about their roles in education, public safety, and commerce. They also had a chance to reflect on the individual hurdles that got us to where we are today.
Episode Three of the RPS Family Liaisons Cooking Series Focuses on Peru
In this third episode, you are invited on a culinary journey to Peru, brought to you by What's Cooking Revere from RevereTV. Senndy Paz, a parent liaison at the Garfield School, will be showcasing the art of preparing a traditional Peruvian dish, Ocopa Arequipeña.
Accompanying Senndy is Estaphany Rodriguez, the Family and Community Coordinator for Revere Public Schools. Together, they’ll lead you through while also providing insights into Peruvian culture.
