Rock Candy Experiment Delights Chemistry Honors Students
In a sweet twist to their chemistry studies, students from the honors class recently embarked on a delicious experiment, crafting their very own rock candy in the lab. Mixing approximately 3 cups of sugar per 1 cup of water, they carefully heated the solution until all the sugar dissolved. Adding flavor to their solution, they then transferred it into cups or jars.
The highlight of the experiment was the placement of sugar-covered sticks into the solution, allowing them to cool down over a week or more. As the temperature dropped, the magic unfolded – crystals began to sprout as sugar precipitated, forming the iconic rock candy.
Throughout the process, students keenly observed the principles of saturated solutions, the impact of temperature on solubility and precipitation, and the mesmerizing formation of crystals in a solution. And of course, they had a blast tasting their sweet creations along the way!
This hands-on experiment not only tickled their taste buds but also deepened their understanding of chemistry concepts, making learning both educational and enjoyable. Stay tuned for more exciting experiments from our budding scientists!
