May 2024 Newsletter- Homer Middle School
The end is near!
I just want to take a moment to sincerely thank every single parent, student, and staff member for making this such an amazing school year! It is such a busy time full of celebrations, it is important to take some time to reflect on all the hard work everyone has done this year and acknowledge the incredible growth our students have shown!
We are working hard to prepare for next year. My plan is to share one more newsletter in a few weeks with information to help you prepare for next year!
If you have suggestions or feedback that will help us plan for next school year, please use the QR codes below to take you to some feedback surveys. You can also just email me (mredmond@kpbsd.k12.ak.us) with any thoughts you have!
Please take a few moments to follow HMS on Facebook and Instagram (@hmsalaska), as we keep these very up to date with pictures and announcements about what is happening at HMS. You can also check out our school website (https://kpbsd.org/schools/homer-middle/), although it is updated far less often. I also ask that you check your contact settings in PowerSchool to make sure you are opted in to receive emails/calls/texts from the school and district to ensure you aren't missing important communications. As always, if you need anything at all during the school year, please do not hesitate to reach out. You can email me at mredmond@kpbsd.k12.ak.us or call the office at 907-235-5700.

New Staff for 24-25
We want to welcome 2 new staff members to the Homer Husky team for the 24-25 school year! We are so excited to have them on board!
Kale Engebretsen- 7th Grade Math
Hello! My name is Kale Engebretsen and I recently moved to Homer from Enumclaw, Washington where I spent most of my childhood. After high school, I attended Western Washington University and got my bachelors degree in Math, then decided to move up to Alaska as I finished my education and completed my teaching certification. I have loved living in Homer and think it is a fantastic community filled with awesome outdoor activities and incredible people. I am extremely excited and grateful to have the opportunity to teach 7th grade math at HMS next year, and look forward to all the moments, challenges, and victories the school year brings. Go Huskies!
Mike Tozzo- Special Education
I am going into my 14th year of teaching and I’m pumped to be joining the wonderful staff at HMS!
Nurse's Corner
With only two weeks of school left, the thought of the next school year is surely not on many people's minds. But I would like to utilize this opportunity to encourage you to plan for the next school year. For those families that have children with health concerns, please keep an eye out for required medical forms being sent to you in early-June. When you take your child to their health care provider, please bring these forms with you so that they can fill them out and then bring to the school at the beginning of the school year. Lastly, for those families that utilized the Religious Exemption form for immunization compliance, those forms will be mailed early-July. Please make your best effort to get those notarized and brought to school before the first day of school. I hope you all have a fabulous summer!
Cheers,
Rebekah Theriot, RN
School Attendance
Regular attendance at school is a vital part of student success. Parents/guardians are expected to call or email the school by 9:30 am whenever their child will be absent.
- Excused Absence- a parent has notified the school that their child is or will be absent from school.
- Unexcused Absence- a parent has not notified the school that their child is or will be absent from school.
- A student is considered absent from a class period once they are 15 minutes late.
When a student will be absent from school for 5 consecutive days or more, a prearranged absence form must be completed and submitted to the office in advance of the absence. The student is expected to be responsible for completing this form and following up with his or her teachers about missing work once he or she is back from the absence.
If a student will be absent more than 10 consecutive days, the parent is required to meet with the principal to discuss the absence and determine next steps.
A letter will be mailed home once a student has reached 10 days absent in a semester, and then every 5 days absent after that.
