Dorothy C. York Innovation Academy
May 24, 2024 Weekly Update
Thank you to all our parents, students, and staff for a fantastic school year! As we reflect on York's 2nd year, we experienced some amazing successes within the district as our students established themselves as leaders in athletics, academics, STEM competitions, band competitions, and more! We can't wait to see what year 3 brings us as we continually grow and improve, especially within our International Baccalaureate Candidacy as we move closer to authorization next year!
Our 5th and 8th graders were celebrated in our final week they prepared to move on to MYP and High School. 5th grade enjoyed a celebration trip to Busch Gardens and field day, while 8th graders took their "last lap" and then returned to school for their 8th grade ceremony, banquet and dance!

During the summer, a questionnaire will be sent out to everyone requesting feedback and suggestions for the 2024-2025 school year. We hope to double the responses from last year to accumulate at least 200 responses. The more involvement from families, the better!

Uniform update as you hit those summer sales!
* Please note, due to safety concerns from injuries this year, Crocs are no longer acceptable footwear. Please also be mindful that clothing should not have logos or name brands larger than a "pinky finger" size, with the exception of York spirit wear.
York is in need of mulch to beautify the campus!
If you are interested in supporting some beautification projects this summer, York is in need of bags of pine bark nuggets. The bags can be dropped off outside the main office. Thanks for your support!
"Service as Action" Information
York MYP students completed 435 acts of service this year according to all the student reporting forms that were submitted!! Well done Admirals -you demonstrated care for your local and global community and we are proud of your efforts!! This was a trial year as we introduced the concept of "service" and practiced reflecting using the reporting form. Next year, homeroom teachers will serve as advisors to help support this required component of an IB education to make sure students are moving forward with their IB goals. Loss of privilege (such as dances or enrichment trips) may occur if students are not making an effort to participate in any of the service options: direct service, indirect service, research, or advocacy.
At York, the Middle School IB "Service as Action" expectation is that students:
- Strive to become caring members of the community
- Demonstrate a personal commitment to service
- Act to make a positive difference in the lives of others
- Make connections between classroom learning and the local or global community
To find more information on the required hours, types of service, and reporting form, please visit York's website and click on the "Learn More About IB at York" button, then view "Service as Action" documents.

Admirals in Action
At Monday night's Admiral Awards over 300 awards were handed out! York recognized Principal's Honor Roll recipients in grades 5-8 (all A's in courses AND conduct), Service Awards, Leadership in clubs/teams, Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, and our PYP "Anchor Up" Awards for consistently demonstrating the 10 IB Learner Profile Attributes throughout the year. As York pursues International Baccalaureate authorization, it was wonderful to honor those who serve as student leaders to their peers on campus! Our 8th grade outstanding awards went to Charlie Pham and Ma'at Scott as the "Admiral Award" recipients, and Landen Syrus as the "Bobby Howard Service Award."
Special "Thank You" to Newland Community for raffling off 3 iPads to our MYP students at the Award Night - they were excited to win!
Last Friday MYP students volunteered their time to participate in a student-initiated service project. Students packed hygiene bags, decorated bags, and wrote cards of encouragement for #HashtagLunchbox to support the homeless in Tampa Bay. Thank you to Aiden C. and his mom for bringing this project to York!

Want to learn more about York's IB program?
International Baccalaureate Candidate School (padlet.com)
Dorothy C. York Innovation Academy is a Candidate School* for the Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Dorothy C. York Innovation Academy believes is important for our students. Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme, or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit www.ibo.org
Cell Phone Reminder:
Students are not permitted to use cell phones in the hallways during MYP class period transitions and should only access phones during class if it is for a teacher-approved purpose. If you need to get a message to your student during the school day, please call the office. Thank you for helping us maintain an academic focus during school hours.
Reminders for a Safe Arrival & Dismissal
Reminder for morning arrivals: Students are only to be dropped off in the lane closest to York's office sidewalk. For our students' safety, please do not allow students to exit cars from the 2nd lane or from parking spots in front of the school as those locations require them to cross moving traffic in lane 1.
Reminder for dismissal: It is important for cars to stay in their designated lane and not switch/merge as it disrupts the dismissal process. Students are called to designated cones based on the order and lane that cars enter our campus. Please be sure to enter our line by 3:15pm while our staff is still out taking names for a quicker dismissal process.
**Please note a change in the flyer below: If emailing a change of dismissal, please email tari.carpenter@hcps.net and anna.avery@hcps.net **
