DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT
St. Mary's City High School is currently participating in the Communication Competency Project through a grant funded by the University of Cincinnati Systems Development & Improvement Center (UC SDI), partnering with the University of Kentucky (UK). The team of Cary Roehm, Special Education Director; Cindy Oliver, Intervention Specialist; Julie Schroeder, Speech Language Pathologist; and Amy Becher, ESC Special Education Director, have been focusing on one student to create a reliable communication system for the student to communicate reliably at school, home and in his community. The team meets for two online training sessions with teams throughout Ohio to help with this. The team also meets every 4-6 weeks with SST6 and the UK partners to discuss progress and determine the next steps of the communication project. This project is funded by the Ohio Center for Deaf Blind Education (OCDBE).
REGION SPOTLIGHT
Career Technical Planning Districts (CTPDs) across our region are making significant progress in developing comprehensive communication plans to enhance support for students with disabilities in career-technical education programs. Following guidelines established by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, these plans will strengthen collaboration between career centers and their associate districts while ensuring equitable access to career-technical pathways.
Our region's four CTPDs are currently engaging in extensive stakeholder meetings with administrators, guidance counselors, and special education directors to refine these communication plans. The meetings, which will continue through January 2024, focus on establishing clear protocols for information sharing, student support services, and program accessibility. These collaborative efforts align with the state's commitment to providing differentiated support and technical assistance for career-technical education students with disabilities while ensuring the effective delivery of special education services within career-technical pathways.
