From Your Pastors
Dear Zion family –
Happy New Year! It has been an incredible opportunity and blessing to watch all God has done at Zion over the past year. From a booming student population in our school to welcoming all sorts of new people into our church, from mission trips to service events to lots of family fun, God is at work. We’re excited to see what He will do among us in 2025!
This Sunday, we’ll wrap up our series “Gift Exchange,” where we’ve been exploring the gifts God wants to exchange with us. This weekend, we’ll talk about how God wants to take the take the control issues all of us can struggle with and exchange it for an invitation to worship Him. We’ll look at a famous story about some wise men from Matthew 2:1-12:
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the One who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd My people Israel.’” Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.” After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
When the Magi meet King Herod, they encounter a ruler who is obsessed with control and terrified of anyone – even a baby – who might try to seize it from him. In contrast to Herod, the Magi joyfully and willingly worship this newborn King. The antidote to control is worship. Find out how to surrender control to God this weekend in worship. We worship at 8 am in our beautiful historic sanctuary, at 10:45 am in our wonderful worship center, or online at zionwalburg.org.

2025 Bible Reading Plan
Have you ever closed your Bible and thought “what did I just read?” Starting January 12, we will partner with The Bible Recap to read through the Old Testament. The Bible Recap is a chronological reading plan with a daily podcast that highlights and summarizes the Bible in an easy-to-understand way. It will not only help you read scripture but help you love reading it. Click the button below for the reading plan or paper copies are available in the Lobby and Narthex.
Adult Bible Classes
New THIS Sunday... Jesus in the Old Testament . This 10-week course will summarize the 39 books of the Old Testament. The course connects with the Old Testament Bible reading challenge at Zion this year. Each week we will look at 4-5 books of the Old Testament providing an overview of each book and looking at how Jesus fits into the story. This is a basic Old Testament survey course designed to assist in reading through the Old Testament in 2025. Led by Pastor Dave Kluth in the Sanctuary.
The Apostles Creed continues in the Parlor.
