Dear Bogota School Community,
In the past year, we've observed distressing conflicts and challenges affecting people in different parts of the world, which may have implications for our loved ones, friends, and the students we deeply care for. Presently, our students may be encountering images and information related to these events through news outlets and social media, as they attempt to grasp their significance. As a parent or guardian, you may find yourself in the position of guiding your child to make sense of the current state of the world. Below, we've provided some resources that can aid you in these discussions. These resources offer several common recommendations, including:
Tailoring your conversations to your child's developmental stage.
Emphasizing the importance of reassuring children about their safety. With older children, you can discuss the difference between the potentiality of an event and its actual likelihood.
Allowing your child to take the lead in the conversation. Answer their questions honestly and in a way that aligns with their age and comprehension.
Monitoring screen time and, when possible, watching the news together.
Recognizing that distress and anxiety may reemerge later on. Continuously observe changes in behavior and maintain open communication.
A reminder that our counselors are available for students to provide a safe space to express their thoughts and feelings. If you have any thoughts or suggestions on this matter, please don't hesitate to reach out. I look forward to working together with all of you to ensure the best for our children.
Warm Regards,
Damian Kennedy
