School Newsletter Term 1, Week 5
Friday 1st March 2024
Kia ora West End whānau
I hope this finds you all well. As we approach the midpoint of Term 1, I have some important updates and announcements to share with our school community.
Firstly, I would like to inform you that Demelza Darby will be joining us as the Maternity Leave cover for Mrs Shinade Cousins in Room 11. This position will commence at the beginning of Term 2 2024. We are excited to continue our journey with Delmelza as part of our team.
Additionally, we are pleased to be welcoming Sarah Morris as our CRT teacher from the beginning of Term 2. Sarah brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to our school, and we are delighted to have her on board.
I am also thrilled to announce that we have successfully filled our Caretaker/Property Manager position. After careful consideration of an incredibly talented pool of applicants, we are confident that Brendan Arnold is the perfect fit for our school. Brendan's background in the building trade and commitment to high standards aligns perfectly with our values, and we look forward to working with him.
I would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Sean Prins, who has been instrumental in maintaining the excellent condition of our school grounds and workspaces. Sean has ensured that our school remains a safe and welcoming environment for all. This will continue for the remainder of term 1.
In other news, we have been notified of an upcoming paid union meeting. The meeting will take place on March 19th, and to minimize disruption to our community, we have decided to attend the afternoon session in Palmerston North from 12.30pm to 2.00pm. As a result, the school will be closing from 12.15pm on March 19th. We understand that this may inconvenience some families, so we will be providing very limited supervision for those who require it. Please inform your classroom teacher if this service is needed.
3 Way Conferences will be held in Week 8
You are now able to book a time for a 3 Way Conference with your child's teacher.
The purpose of the three-way conference is to report to parents about children's overall progress and achievement in Reading, Writing and Maths.
Parents can book for this event by going to the School Bookings website and entering the event code 6v26b, which takes you to step 1 to enter your details.
If you click on the booking link (below) or scanning a booking QR code - this bypasses the event code, going straight to step 1.
Please click on the link or scan the QR Code and follow the instructions (selecting your child's teacher) and finding a time that suits you.
BOOKINGS WILL CLOSE AT 3pm ON MONDAY 18th MARCH.
VIBE Assembly next Thursday at 1.45pm
Puāwaitanga will be leading our second VIBE assembly of the year next Thursday 8th March. We will be starting our VIBE at 1.45pm in the school hall. We look forward to seeing you then!

The small pool will be fixed and ready for Puāwaitanga and Tipuranga swimmers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
We will be sending reminders of swimming via our school app, but please be aware that
Te Wao Nui o Tāne (Room 2, 3, 4, 5) will swim on Monday,
Puāwaitanga (Room 1, 6, 7, 10 and 11) will swim on Tuesday,
Tipuranga (Room 13, 14, 15, 16, 17) will swim on Wednesday.
Children will need to bring togs, towel, goggles and if your child has long hair it will need to be tied up for swimming.
New Zealand History
As part of our Aotearoa New Zealand History Curriculum, Te Wao Nui O Tāne have been exploring the Legend of Okatia. This legend is about the forming of the Manawatū Gorge so we have enjoyed learning more about our place. This week, Rūma Rua have been showing Kotahitanga as they work with buddies to retell this legend using Book Creator to create a comic. We can't wait to share our comics when they are finished!
In need of some more Lego...
Lego club has started up again this year and it has got even bigger! More students are coming along to have fun building and using their Mana Aoturoa to create some awesome things. We are on the look for some more lego so that there is more to go around for everyone. If you have any lego that you would be willing to donate to the school, that would be greatly appreciated. Just drop off to the Office and they will pass it onto me.
Bringing Headphones to school
It would be fantastic if children could bring in their own headphones for use with classroom ipads and chromebooks. We have some amazing educational resources available to help support learning within our kura, and it would be helpful if children were able to bring in named headphones to use when on a device.
