Family Demo Memo
January 16th, 2025
Principal Message
Dear Demo Community,
What an incredible week it has been at The School of Champions! As we approach the final stretch of the semester, our students are putting in their best effort in preparation for finals week. It’s inspiring to witness the dedication and hard work that our students are putting into their studies, all while also celebrating the incredible talents within our Arts programs. Dance and Theatre performances have been nothing short of spectacular, showcasing the creativity and passion of our young performers.
In addition to academic and artistic achievements, our winter sports teams are in full swing, with both wrestling and basketball competing at a high level. The energy and teamwork on display are a true testament to the spirit of our school.
As we move forward, please be sure to review this week's schedule and note the important dates ahead. I’d also like to remind you to mark your calendars for our Yondr Community Meeting on January 22nd, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Jefferson Cafeteria. During this meeting, we’ll review expectations, answer any questions you may have, and discuss how we can work together to continue fostering a positive and focused environment for our students.
Thank you for being a part of this vibrant and supportive community. We are so proud of all the accomplishments this week, and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.
See you soon!
Warm regards,
Drake

ATTENTION!!!
District Policy:
Leaving Campus without permission: Failing to remain on school grounds, at any point after arrival, without authorization which also includes school-sponsored activities such as field trips.
Please remind your student to remain on campus during the school day, except during lunchtime. Leaving campus outside of lunch unexcused is considered a Type 3 violation. This will include a phone call home and the assignment of at least 1 after-school detention.
The JHS Support Intervention Ladder
Or, "The Ladder" for short, is our school's approach to addressing Conduct Violation and unexcused attendance codes such as LAT (Late after Tardy) and SKP (Skipping). When students have Conduct Violation or Unexcused attendance codes without a valid and documented excuse, they will meet with Administration or the Student Attendance Coach and be placed on the ladder. The steps for the ladder are located below. For any questions, please contact the Administration (Principal Shelton, Vice Principal Johns, or Vice Principal Gregory) or La’Mar Winston Jr., Student Attendance Coach.
Below are the attendance percentages for our entire student body, based on data pulled on 01/16/25
- Green: Students with 90% to 100% attendance
- Yellow: Students with 80% to 89.9% attendance
- Red: Students with attendance below 79.9%
AVID
The AVID team recently began delivering Social Emotional lessons from the curriculum “We Do It 4 The Culture”. This week, some of the AVID teachers were able to meet with folks from the WDI4TC team and reflect on how it has been going and do some planning as well. We’re excited to be bringing this curriculum to Jefferson!

iUrban Teen
If you have any students who may be struggling in Math and Writing, this is a great resource! Also a great place and time to get homework done and to study. Mentors are in the library from 3:30-5:30 on Monday-Thursday.
Culture/Climate
This Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. day. Students are being asked to pick one of his quotes that resonates with them. The quotes will be placed throughout the building. There are several places that will be celebrating Dr. King’s message and impact on American History. The World Arts Foundation has their annual Keep Alive The Dream celebration of MLK at the Hyatt Regency from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Portland State University has a Presentation of the Letter From Birmingham Jail and PCC Cascade Campus is hosting the Black History Mobile Museum on 1/22/25 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Chinese New Year:
Kyoko Waltner will be advising the Asian Pacific Islander Student Union starting the second semester. On January 28th the students will be demonstrating how to write this Chinese New Year greeting in calligraphy : "Spring comes.” The Chinese Lunar New Year is pretty much the start of Spring in the old calendar.
