More Honors For Music Ensembles!
Over the Memorial Day weekend, the SVHS Choir traveled to Darien Lake for a competition and performed exceptionally well! The choir received a Gold with Distinction rating of a 97.7 and placed first out of 3 HS Mixed Choirs but more impressively received the Grand Jurors Award which means they were the best overall ensemble that performed in the pavilion that day!
Also, the SVC Concert Band recently earned a Gold rating as a Level IV ensemble at the 2024 NYSSMA Majors Music Festival! The NYSSMA Majors Festival differs from others throughout the year by specifically providing a venue for larger ensembles to formally perform before panels of NYSSMA trained adjudicators. Two of the three performed selections are required to be chosen from the NYSSMA manual which contains specific repertoire lists sorted by difficulty of I-VI (I being the easiest and VI being the most difficult). The adjudicators evaluated the band, provided comments on the pieces and also spoke to the ensemble following their performance. NYSSMA states that gold ratings are awarded to organizations that have demonstrated an “outstanding level of technical and artistic skill in each of the evaluative categories, for all three selections." We are so proud of our band members. This is a major accomplishment and one we hope they will remember throughout their musical careers!
Congratulations to all of our student musicians!
Juniors Engage in Job Shadowing Experiences
Earlier this spring, 42 juniors from Sauquoit Valley High School participated in a job shadow day, an initiative organized by the OHM BOCES School to Career Programs (also known as the School and Business Alliance or SABA). Job shadows allow students to gain firsthand experience in career fields they might be interested in exploring after high school.
In addition to the job shadowing experiences, we also had 23 students attend a recent college visit trip to SUNY POLY and Utica University, and we had students participate in multi-day internships in April, all organized and facilitated by School to Career Programs.
We commend these students for taking advantage of these wonderful opportunities!
Senior Seminar Students Continue to Serve The Community
Earlier this spring, students in the Senior Seminar elective visited the St. Luke's Home as another community service field trip. Our 27 senior students traversed the nursing home to kindly invite, encourage, and transport the residents to the day's activity session, where they helped each resident create a beehive craft project to decorate their rooms. Our students' youthful enthusiasm and friendliness was a much celebrated and appreciated gesture among both the elderly residents and staff. We were so proud to witness the kindness and empathy our students gave to the oftentimes overlooked elderly population of our greater community.
Messett Wins Perseverance Award
We are happy to announce that the fourth quarter winner of the Sauquoit Valley High School Perseverance Award is Liz Messett! Liz was nominated by Ms. Kemp who wrote: “I wanted to nominate Elizabeth Messett for this award because she has grown throughout this school year both academically and personally. She started the school year a little late, but settled into the classroom atmosphere rather quickly. She has come out of her shell a lot this year; she volunteers to read in class, answers questions regularly, and works well in pair or group situations. Because she wants to maintain high grades, she will often come into my study hall to work on assignments or to be sure she is on the right path with written work. I am proud of Elizabeth's progress.” Liz will receive a certificate and a $25 Amazon gift card. Congrats, Liz!
Positive Referral Award Recipients Recognized
Brayden Maltese and Kaylie Roach were recently recognized as Positive Referral Award winners!
Brayden was recognized for his exceptional demonstration of relationship skills. Brayden’s friendly and welcoming energy has not gone unnoticed. Mrs. Stout nominated him for this award. She noted Brayden’s welcoming attitude saying he takes the time to knuckle knock, high five, and just generally interact with all students in the building. She said, “I think it is wonderful that he makes all feel so welcome and included in our school.” Thanks, Brayden, for contributing to our school culture in such a positive way.
Kaylie was recognized for her exceptional relationship skills and responsible decision making. Kaylie is a wonderful student and makes positive connections with both her fellow classmates and with staff. Mrs. Leone and Mrs. Arcuri nominated her based on their observations in English class. Kaylie works well in collaborative groups, always gives her best effort, and has a cheerful and positive attitude. Furthermore, Kaylie is incredibly responsible, completing assignments on time and independently making up work following absences.
As a token of appreciation for their outstanding achievements, each student will be receiving a free large cheese pizza from Charlie's Pizza in Washington Mills, courtesy of The Sauquoit Valley PTO. Congratulations!
9th Grade Honors Students Combine Literature and Food in Creative Project
Ninth grade honors students recently showcased their creativity and literary knowledge by creating thematic food trucks. Students in Mrs. Leone’s ELA 9 Honors class chose a book to read independently. They then had to get creative, designing a food truck that represented characters, conflicts, and themes in their novels.
The students presented their food trucks to their peers in grades 9-12 earlier this spring in the high school library. The event allowed students to explore the different food trucks and engage in discussions with the creators. Some students even checked out their next read!
Reilly-Stewart Wins Teacher of the Month
Congratulations to Ms. Alissa Reilly-Stewart for recently being recognized as the recipient of the SVCSD Teacher of the Month award, sponsored by T5 Insurance Services! Ms. Reilly-Stewart teaches Freshmen Seminar, French II, French III, French IV, and Dual Credit French V. She is also the junior class advisor and the co-freshmen class advisor. She is a valued member of our faculty. We appreciate all that she does to support our students and our school community!
