Oakhurst Weekly
Spirit Week Success (and it's not over yet)!
We're having a super fun week with pajamas, hats, team gear, and socks – and tomorrow we're going to SHOW OUT for our DHS Bulldogs on HOMECOMING FRIDAY with our Bulldog Blue & Gold! 💙 💛
Thank you to Coach Felton and the DHS Football Team and to Coach Burnett and the DHS Cheer Squad for kicking off our Team Day (Wednesday) with extra spirit! We're all cheering you on against Chamblee on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at DHS.
We hope to see lots of Oakhurst Owls out at the Homecoming parade, which kicks off at 5:30 p.m. from the DHS bus loop (on Commerce). Click here for the Homecoming Parade Route.
In addition to Spirit Week, we've also been super lucky to host some amazing guests this week. Mayor Patti Garrett visited our second graders (who are currently learning about government levels and roles) to share information about what it's like to be a mayor and the importance of jobs in city government.
Our whole school got to see the fantastically talented DHS Advanced Musical Theater class perform a musical revue this morning. What an amazing start to our day! We've got seriously talented young people in our community, and Oakhurst is thankful to the performers and their teachers for bringing their show to us.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
At Oakhurst, we are proud to celebrate numerous cultures as part of our daily practice throughout the year, and we are excited when we get an entire month to examine a particular culture more closely!
Monday kicks off our month-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with book spotlights, a library display and a daily spotlight on Hispanic heroes and heroines. Please join us at our Hispanic heritage-themed community circle on Friday, September 20 at 8:30 a.m. to keep the celebration going!
The New York Public Library offers amazing resources (ever for non-New Yorkers!) year-round, and they've got a really special menu of Hispanic Heritage Month resources and events. Please visit the New York Public Library website for book lists and multilingual story times!
AUTHOR VISIT: Order Form Due by Next Thursday!
We're very excited to host Mia Armstrong as our first author visit of the year! Mia and her mom will visit with and read to all grade levels on Thursday, October 3. Order forms for Mia's book "I am a Masterpiece!" are in your child's communication folder.
You can "get to know" Mia ahead of time by watching this clip of her on CBS Mornings. And here's a fun Crayola Creativity Week video that includes a drawing activity with the book's illustrator, Alexandra Thompson.
The deadline for this book order is THURSDAY, September 19.
Checks payable to: Oakhurst Elementary School
Cash (exact change) is accepted.
Important Information about Gifted Review:
Each fall semester the Gifted Review Team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and turn it in to Amanda Lockwood at alockwood@csdecatur.net by Wednesday, October 2. No additional information is needed.
For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact Ms. Lockwood or visit the following website: https://www.csdecatur.net/Page/581.
