PLAEA Computer Science Workshop
Creating your K-12 Computer Science Plan
What & Why? Participants will collaborate with their K-12 district team to complete CS for ALL’s SCRIPT framework: the Strategic CS for ALL Resource & Implementation Planning Tool to help them write their K-12 Computer Science plan to meet the requirements of the Future Ready Act, House File 2629, which requires all districts to develop and/or expand and implement a K-12 computer science plan by July 1, 2022. This plan will also include districts putting in place computer science best practice opportunities for their K-12 students.
Who? It is recommended that bldg. level and central office administrators, teachers represented in all three grade bands, and instructional/tech coaches attend and who will lead the work outlined in their plan. This representation will help identify what the current reality and the desired state at the classroom level and the systems level in order for the team to make decisions to move toward the desired state.
When? Two full-day workshops in various regions in Prairie Lakes from 9:00-3:30. A working lunch will be taking place during the panel discussion (BYOLunch or catered in at district expense). A longer one-day workshop from 8:00-4:00 is also being provided for schools who want to begin the work but will use time back in district to continue the process in order to complete their plan.

- Oct. 15th & 22nd ~ Pocahontas PLAEA office ~ 9:00-3:30
- Oct. 20th & 25th ~ Webster City: Briggs Woods Conference Center ~ 9:00-3:30
- Nov. 12th & 16th ~ Spencer PLAEA office ~ 9:00-3:30
One day workshop:
- December 3rd ~ Pocahontas PLAEA office ~ 8:00-4:00
Outcomes
- Understand about the state of Computer Science education in Iowa
- Determine what Computer Science is and is not
- Create a Computer Science vision
- Self-Assess five key areas of systems-level change
- Learn and hear from people in the Computer Science fields
- Begin to set & prioritize goals
Funding to support the cost of attending CS/SCRIPT workshops
Districts and nonpublic schools can apply for funding to attend a registered SCRIPT workshop through IowaGrants, Funding Opportunity 413832.
Grant Application and Implementation Guidance - SCRIPT Computer Science Grants
Funds will cover:
Teacher professional time (sub/stipend)
Maximum sub pay amount is $150/day, based on the school’s regular rate.
Maximum stipend amount is $20/hour or $160/day, based on the school’s regular rate
Administrator stipends will be covered as permitted by their contract.
