Wiggin Street Parent Update

Families,

It has been nice seeing so many of you at Parent/Teacher Conferences! We are proud of the growth your children are showing and happy to have conversations about ways to meet specific needs. If at anytime throughout the year you would like to meet to check in on their continued progress, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks to all that volunteered to help with the Book Fair this week! This is a highlight for the kids, and it's great to see them excited about purchasing books and shopping for their wish list. Also, thank you to those that provided lunch for teachers last night and today. It was nice to see teachers be able to gather together and enjoy a meal. It was much appreciated!

Next Friday, we have Donuts with Grownups at 8:00 am in the gym and following will be our flag ceremony for Veterans Day observance. We would like to invite any Veterans that are available to attend, so you may be recognized. All are welcome, and we hope to see you!

Students can purchase items on Monday morning which is the final shopping day. Those who want to shop should bring money or have money on their ewallets.

We appreciate all of the parents that helped provide food for teachers! The soups and salads were delicious, and shout out to Chad Taylor for providing the Subway dinner on Wednesday. You all made our long days so much brighter!

Please join us on Tuesday, November 10th at 8:00 in the gym! Donuts, juice, and coffee will be provided for any student and their grown-up to share together. Immediately following at 9:10 am will be a Veterans Day Observance Flag Ceremony on the front lawn.

We will be having a flag ceremony, weather permitting, with our students on the morning of November 10th in observance of Veterans Day. We would like to invite any Veterans that are available to attend, so you may be recognized. The flag ceremony will take place on the front lawn around 9:10 am and is the same day as our "Donuts with Grownups" that begins at 8:00 am, so you are welcome to observe the ceremony which will include the flag raising, Pledge of Allegiance, poems, and the National Anthem.

Wiggin Street will be participating in the annual Food for the Hungry drive from November 13-17. Each class will have a collection box. Students can contribute non-perishable food or monetary donations.

Our next Friends of Wiggin Street meeting will be November 7th at 5:00 pm. We hope to see you there!

We are hoping to plan a celebration of cultures for near the end of the school year. This would be during the school day. To help with planning, we would appreciate family members filling out this School Culture Survey, so that the event is representative of the student body and their families.

Please remember that students will go outside on days where the temperature with wind chill accounted for is 20°f and above. Be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather each day. Coats, hats, and gloves are necessary at this time of the year. Boots are required for playing in the snow. If you need assistance with winter outerwear for your child, please contact our school, and we will happily find warm clothes for them.

Make sure to save the date! Mrs. Springer has been preparing our students for their Winter Program, and you won't want to miss it. The flyer provided below gives all the information needed.

Our 4th grade Peer Mediators are in full swing during the lunch/recess hour. They have been working hard and helping their peers solve their small problems! The Peer Mediators have displayed responsibility, kindness, and effective problem solving skills! They should all be so proud of themselves. We are definitely proud of them for working hard to keep our playground a fun and safe place to be! Great job, Peer Mediators!

Fourth grade students learned about the Mexican holiday, El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) in Art class. They then created their own skeletons inspired by this holiday that is celebrated this week (November 1st-2nd.) For extra fun and knowledge, students watched some of the Disney movie Coco while working as it portrays many of the cultural elements and celebrations of El Dia de los Muertos.

Second grade students have been learning about landscapes during Art class. They have learned what a foreground, middleground, background and horizon line all are. This week we took what we have learned about landscapes and added in some color theory. Students learned what the primary colors are and how two primary colors can mix together to create a secondary color. Some students mixed primary colors together with paint while others used clay to get these results and beautiful landscapes!

Thanks to those that went through the Lost and Found during conferences. Remember that it is helpful to label all jackets, lunchboxes, bookbags, etc.

For those dropping off students in the morning, please do not get out of your vehicle. If your student needs assistance getting out of the vehicle, please pull off to the right side and walk them safely to the sidewalk.

Also, students are to walk in front of their car when exiting from the passenger side, so parents can watch for them. For this reason, please do not back up to go around a car. If you leave plenty of space between cars, you can go around if needed.

This is for the safety of all students, so that no one gets injured. Thank you!

For pick up, please do not arrive until 3:30. There is no stopping, standing, or parking on E. Brooklyn St. allowed. Also, please reminder that our school is an Idle-free Zone. Protect our children and the community by turning off your engine.
