Principals' Message
Good Afternoon SCS Families and Caregivers,
“Psychologists have scientifically proven that one of the greatest contributing factors to overall happiness in your life is how much gratitude you show.” As we all (hopefully) slow down, take stock of the calendar year as it comes to a close, and think about the things we’re grateful for, this quote from a video shown at the 5-8 assembly on Wednesday continues to resonate. Part of our work in supporting students each day involves helping them build their awareness around gratitude. While it’s not always an explicit part of the curriculum, helping kids recognize the special things in their lives - and in our school - is a great way to promote a sense of pride and belonging. And it’s hard work! The human brain is wired to notice the bad stuff (Google “negativity bias” for more on that) as a survival tool, so being grateful is not an innate skill most of us possess. It’s one that we have to learn and practice to make it meaningful.
This week, we’ve seen countless examples of students showing gratitude by supporting each other and our wider school community. Here are just a few:
5th and 6th grade students visited the Pierson Library to check out an art exhibition by one of their peers.
Some 3rd graders returned to mentor in their 1st grade teachers’ classes.
Red Team helpers prepared to support at recess for younger grades when we return from break.
8th graders visited an elementary class to play chess.
Kindergarteners drew a picture and wrote a message to a faculty or staff member that they wanted to say “thank you” to.
WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) leaders hosted a breakfast for 100+ 5th graders on Wednesday morning.
Not to be outdone, our faculty and staff hosted our annual potluck on Wednesday. The staff room was abuzz throughout the day with delicious and nourishing treats. This morning, Mrs. Newman also started an email chain inviting each of us to share what we’re grateful for. As of last count there are more than 30 responses! While we know that school breaks can bring a mix of feelings for students and families alike, we’re grateful for the various ways appreciation spread throughout our halls (and inboxes) this week. We’re grateful to all of you for supporting this community as well!
As a reminder, there is no school next week. We look forward to seeing everyone back at SCS on Monday, December 2.
Thank you,
Alison, Brett, & Emily

Community Information
Community Health Needs Assessment
The University of Vermont Medical Center is currently conducting its annual Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) of Chittenden and Grand Isle counties. Results will be used to better understand and respond to the top community health needs in these counties. Those who live in these Chittenden or Grand Isle counties and are 16 years of age or older are encouraged to complete this survey, which takes less than 10 minutes.
Holiday Note: Connecting Youth Connects Caregivers
If next week is a time for gathering, celebrating, and family connectedness, we wish you joy and happiness. Those moments are precious. If this time of year brings up challenging emotions - stress, loneliness, or missing loved ones - please be kind to yourself.
For those whose celebrations involve alcohol, be mindful of the young people who are present and watching. The way adults model responsible drinking behaviors significantly influences the risk perceptions and actions of young individuals. We recognize that not all aspects of holiday celebrations involving alcohol are within our control. However, many situations are preventable, particularly concerning underage [binge] drinking and impaired driving.
For a little more on the topic, check out this take from Jessica Lahey, a renowned NYT bestselling author, parent educator, and prevention coach.
This time of year is also a prime opportunity to have a conversation about alcohol and substances with your kids. Just try starting from a restorative place about their safety and genuine concern rather than a restrictive "don’t get caught" mindset. We know that when we have open, honest and curious conversations about substances, our words can have a more significant impact on their choices and behaviors.

Have a wonderful break!

Passing Along the Green Jacket at the Grade 5-8 Assembly!
As part of the 5-8 assembly on Wednesday, we continued the tradition of passing the along the Green Jacket. The jacket is given to a teacher or staff member who has embodied our values of taking care of ourselves, each other, and this place. This time around, Mr. B's basecamp passed the jacket on to Mr. Membrino, who proudly wore it the rest of the day. We also heard updates from student leadership groups, found out how to become 4-19% happier by showing gratitude, and discovered that even with 375 people in the gym, there is still a 40% chance that it's nobody's birthday. It was a great way to build community as we move into the second trimester.
"Readopoly" fun at the SCS Library! 📚
Shout-out to Kate Lucia and Fiona Kovacik, our amazing library team, for coming up with a fun way to get our middle-schoolers excited about reading. Ms. Lucia works with each elementary school class throughout the week, so she knows them well. To make a more meaningful connection with middle schoolers, check out the "Readopoly" board outside the library. Any student who reads one of the VT Golden Dome book award nominees gets to design a game piece, roll the dice, and win some fun reading-related prizes. We've got more than 60 kids playing so far. It's getting us excited for the Read-a-thon in February!
Dynamic Experiences Fun
Students continued to have a great time with Dynamic Experiences this week.
🍕 Students enjoyed making pizza with Erika! 🍕
Students made delicious smoothies with Mrs. Elia and Mrs. Megan! 🥤
Volunteer Opportunities
Connecting Youth (CY) Mentoring is looking for a few more mentors!
Great volunteer positions here at SCS!
Connecting Youth (CY) Mentoring is looking for a few more mentors!
Our program matches volunteer mentors with amazing middle-school students who would benefit from an additional positive adult in their lives. Pairs meet at SCS in our dynamic mentoring space, during the school day, on a day & time that works around the mentor's and the mentee's schedules. Pairs meet for a 45" block once/week. Mentors are provided with training and continual support.
Come join our team, and enjoy the benefits of building a relationship with a great kid!
What our mentors say:
"It is so fun to be connected!"
"This is the best way to start my day! It's better than the gym!"
Please contact Alice Brown, SCS CY Mentor Coordinator, abrown@cvsdvt.org to learn more.
