Welcome Back
Bob Edwards
Dear Cortland Families,
Happy New Year and welcome back to another exciting chapter of learning and growth for our Purple Tigers! As we begin the new year, we are proud to continue fostering a positive, supportive environment where our students are learning what it truly means to ROAR.
The ROAR philosophy—Respectful, Open-Hearted, Act Safely, Responsible—continues to be the focus of our school culture. It’s more than just a set of words; it’s a common language that resonates throughout our schools. You’ll see and hear it in student interactions, during classroom instruction, as students walk the halls, and in their daily routines. Our goal is to teach students what these expectations look like and sound like in various settings throughout the school day.
Each of our schools has developed a unique "ROAR Matrix" that translates these values into age-appropriate behaviors. These matrices reflect specific actions students should take in different contexts, helping them understand how to act respectfully, safely, responsibly, and with an open heart, whether they are in the classroom, on the playground, competing in a game or transitioning between classes.
The ROAR matrix for each school takes these essential SEL skills and translates them into clear, actionable behaviors. Teachers at each building have developed plans for teaching these skills, beginning at the start of the school year and continuing throughout. This approach not only supports academic success but also fosters the social and emotional growth that is critical for our students’ overall well-being. In addition to this focus on specific behavioral standards we continue to build supports for students for when they need them. Each building has a robust and committed staff who provide academic and social emotional interventions and supports.
As we welcome in this new year, thank you to all of our staff who continue to do the good work. And, for our families, please keep us as your essential partner in helping your child ROAR! Here's to a successful and fulfilling second half of the school year.
Wishing you all the best in 2025.

Happy New Year! It is time to get ready for 2025. As we know, the school year is going to fly by and June will be here before we know it. In the month of January, we will be covering important topics in the Positivity Project curriculum. Students will hear about and take part in conversations about how their words and actions impact others. We will also look into the true meaning of Fairness. We will discuss how life is not always fair and how fair does not always mean equal. My favorite quote that students will hear in the month of January is as follows: If you have the chance to make people happy, just do it. Sometimes people are struggling silently. Maybe your act of kindness can make their day.
Tenured Staff
The Cortland Enlarged City School District proudly announces the awarding of tenure to three esteemed staff members: Judith Darsky, a High School Psychologist; Roy Pratt, a Junior High School English Teacher; and Devon Tennant, Junior High School Social Worker. This significant achievement reflects their dedication to education and commitment to the well-being of their students.
Tenure, a permanent and guaranteed contract in academia, has a rich history dating back to the 1600s. Its primary purpose is to uphold academic freedom, shielding educators and researchers from potential dismissal due to political or social backlash, as well as ensuring that academic pursuits remain focused on the quest for knowledge rather than external opinions. The awarding of tenure signifies a recognition of the individual's contributions to their field and their commitment to fostering an enriching learning environment. The Cortland Schools community is thrilled to honor Judith Darsky, Devon Tennant and Roy Pratt for their exemplary service and significant contributions to the district. Their hard work and dedication not only enhances the educational experiences of students but also contributes to the overall success of the school community. As the district moves forward, it remains committed to supporting its educators, recognizing their vital role in shaping the future of their students and the community at large.

Lincoln Moshkowsk finished 1st in the region, 2nd overall in the State!
Mika Eaton finished 2nd in the region!
Damauri Bell finished 3rd in the region!
Excellent job Cortland, we continue to be an investing powerhouse, let’s continue the tradition in the second semester; good luck!

Black Light Art Shows
HS Art Department Presents Black Light Art Show
A Dazzling Visual Experience for Everyone!
January 22, 2024 – The Art Department of Cortland is excited to announce its first-ever Black Light Art Show on January 22, 2024, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the high school art wing (Room 186 and 187) . This innovative and immersive event promises to be a unique celebration of creativity, featuring student artwork that glows under the captivating effects of black light.
This one-of-a-kind art show will showcase original pieces created by students in a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, and mixed media. The event highlights the use of fluorescent paints and UV-reactive materials, bringing each work of art to life in a new and magical way.
Our students have worked hard to push their artistic boundaries and explore the ways light and color interact. We wanted to create an experience where viewers can see art in a whole new light—literally. The black light adds an element of surprise and wonder to every piece.
In addition to the glowing artwork, the event will feature:
Glow Sticks and bracelets!
Face Painting!
Interactive Art Stations where attendees can create their own black light masterpieces (Bring a piece of dark clothing!)
Refreshments and snacks available
This free event is open to the entire community, and all ages are welcome to attend. Guests are encouraged to wear neon or white clothing to fully embrace the glowing atmosphere. The Black Light Art Show is a perfect opportunity for art lovers, students, and families to experience something new and unforgettable.
